  • Patent number: 8382958
Abstract: Apparatus and a process are described for compressing superheated steam into porous coal batches in chambers, and, after a time interval, expanding this steam out of the chambers, and repeating this steam cycle of compression followed by expansion. Thusly heated by the steam, volatile matter separates from the solid coke portion of the coal and separate volatile matter and coke products can be produced from coal or biomass fuels. These volatile matter liquids and tars can be used as fuel components in slurry fuels, for internal combustion engines used in our surface transportation industries. These solid coke products can be used as boiler fuel in steam electric plants. In this way our large domestic reserves of coal can be used as a fuel source, not only for electric power generation, but also for our surface transportation needs.

  • Patent number: 6187148
Abstract: The present invention is a valve for a non-recovery coke oven which permits improved control of the gas pressure in the interior cavity of the oven. The valve has a rotating plug with a beveled end which progressively connects and disconnects the interior cavity of an oven with a downcomer valve disposed in an oven wall to change the gas pressure in the interior of the oven. By controlling the gas pressure the amount of combustion air entering the oven can be controlled giving an operator control over the thermal gradients established by combustion. The combustion of a majority of the coal gas in the flues below the oven floor creates a thermal gradient that rises through the oven floor, a gradient which is ideal for the production of an improved coke product.

  • Patent number: 4105503
Abstract: Control of emission from coke ovens during charging. A bank of coke ovens is provided with two gas mains. The first of the gas mains is connected to each of the individual ovens in turn during charging. The second of the gas mains is connected to the bank of ovens during coking. A fluid energized venturi ejector maintains a predetermined level of vacuum at the head of each individual coke oven during charging. Means are provided to automatically reduce the suction provided by the ejector if the level of vacuum exceeds said limit. This means consists of a valve operated by changes in the level of vacuum at the head of the individual oven during charging. The valve connects the second main to the first, thus increasing the gas pressure applied at the throat of the venturi ejector in turn decreasing the degree of vacuum provided by the venturi ejector. The energy for the ejector may be provided by flushing liquor or by a compressible fluid such as steam, air or an inert gas.
