Patent number: 8092656Abstract: A process for treatment of an aqueous stream to produce a low solute containing distillate stream and a high solute/solids containing blowdown stream utilizing a method to increase the efficiency of an evaporator while providing an essentially scale free environment for the heat transfer surface. Multi-valent ions and non-hydroxide alkalinity are removed from aqueous feed streams to very low levels and then the pH is increased preferably to about 9 or higher to increase the ionization of low ionizable constituents in the aqueous solution. In this manner, species such as silica and boron become highly ionized, and their solubility in the concentrated solution that is present in the evaporation equipment is significantly increased. The result of this is high allowable concentration factors and a corresponding increase in the recovery of high quality reusable water with essentially no scaling.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2003Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: Aquatech International CorporationInventors: Keith R. The occurrence of self-polymerization of the alkoxysilane is restrained.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 1999Publication date: December 13, 2001Inventors: KATSUHIRO UEHARA, MIKIO ENDO, TOHRU KUBOTA, SATOSHI UCHIDA, KANJI MUROFUSHI

Patent number: 6258206Abstract: A process for evaporating spent liquor or other waste liquids from cellulose cooking, The evaporation is performed in a multiplicity of evaporators which are coupled in series and in which the evaporation is driven using the liquor steam. The condensates from the steam are divided, in one of more effects, into at least two fractions with respect to purity. The parer fraction from one effect is conveyed, at a high level, into a subsequent effect in the direction of movement of the liquor, while the dirtier fraction is conveyed, at a high level or at the very top, into a preceding effect in the direction of movement of the liquor.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1998Date of Patent: July 10, 2001Assignee: Kvaerner Pulping ABInventors: Lars Gunnar Olausson, Lars Eric Pettersson, Olof Tryggve Wennberg, Anders Henrik Wernqvist

Patent number: 6048441Abstract: Neopentyl glycol hydroxypivalate (NGH) is isolated from a mixture containing NGH, lower- and higher-boiling products and inorganic salts and purified in a two-stage process, whereinin a first separation stage, the inorganic salts and part of the higher-boiling products are separated off in a wiped-film evaporator and a vapor stream consisting of NGH, lower- and higher-boiling products is discharged and fed to a heat exchanger and condensed therein, and, in a second separation stage, the resulting condensate is distilled in a rectification column from which NGH is taken off in a side stream and condensed. Further discharges of the rectification column containing lower-boiling products or higher-boiling products are separately taken off. The higher-boiling products which comprise residual NGH are partly or completely recycled to the lower region of the rectification column.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1998Date of Patent: April 11, 2000Assignee: BASF AktiengesellschaftInventors: Heinz Auer, Siegfried Kruger, Stephan Scholl, Theodor Weber, Johann-Peter Melder

Patent number: 5853549Abstract: A large and economical type of multi-stack vertical tube evaporator (MS-VTE) having units of multiple stacks of vertical tube bundles or stages mounted in a single vessel, and having its liquid feed pumped to the uppermost VTE bundle stack or stage and having the feed then cascading downward through the lower bundle stacks in series flow, and wherein all the tube bundles are heated with the same waste steam of no or low $-value, e. g. with turbine reject steam in parallel flow under vacuum into the steam-sides of all tube bundles in the unit through a common steam conduit; and wherein the feed liquid is progressively evaporated from stage to stage or stack to stack and the vapors produced in the tubes of each bundle during the partial evaporation of the feed are separated between the stacks and condensed by parallel flow into one or more condensers.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1996Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Inventor: Hugo H. Patent number: 5770020Abstract: The invention relates to a distillation apparatus (1) which is suitable in particular for the distillation of sea water into fresh water. The apparatus includes a plurality of flat, bag-like elements (3) formed from a thin film material such as plastic film and placed one against the other, the elements serving as heat exchangers between a vaporizing liquid flowing along the exterior surfaces of the element and a condensing vapor directed to the inside of the element, and a compressor (15) for increasing the pressure and temperature of the generated vapor before it is directed to the inside of the elements. The essential idea of the invention is that at the upper end of each bag-like element (3) there is a honeycomb-structured end strip (4) having substantially the width of the element, the strip containing parallel feeding ducts (26) separated from each other by partition walls, the ducts distributing the liquid to be evaporated over the entire width of the element surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1996Date of Patent: June 23, 1998Assignee: Keeran Corporation N.V.Inventors: Peter Koistinen, Reijo Rantala

Patent number: 5660691Abstract: Disclosed is an improved process for the preparation of tocotrienol/tocopherol blend concentrates from vegetable oil distillates which are enriched in tocotrienols. Tocotrienol/tocopherol blend concentrates are obtained containing 20-80% tocotrienols/tocopherols by weight, with an overall recovery of tocotrienols/tocopherols of 72% to 97%. The process is comprised first of an esterification reaction where the more volatile alcohols are converted to their less volatile fatty acid esters, followed by a series of distillation steps where components boiling higher and lower than the tocotrienols/tocopherols are separated from tocotrienols/tocopherols and other like boiling substances. Advantages of the process are that tocotrienol/tocopherol blend concentrates are produced efficiently and economically in a minimum number of steps without the use of solvents and with a relatively small capital investment.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1995Date of Patent: August 26, 1997Assignee: Eastman Chemical CompanyInventors: Scott Donald Barnicki, Charles Edwan Sumner, Jr., Hampton Loyd Chip Williams, III

Patent number: 5630914Abstract: A method for decontaminating a liquid of a contaminant having a vapor pressure which is higher than the vapor pressure of the liquid. A contaminated liquid is directed through an inclined conduit. A gas is directed into the inclined conduit, whereby the gas contacts the liquid and transports the contaminant, which has volatilized in the inclined conduit, out of the inclined conduit, thereby decontaminating the liquid. The liquid is discharged from the inclined conduit.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: Pharm-Eco Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Yesh P. Sachdeva, Richard L. Gabriel
