  • Patent number: 10749309
Abstract: A fiber-based optical amplifier is assembled in a compact configuration by utilizing a flexible substrate to support the amplifying fiber as flat coils that are “spun” onto the substrate. The supporting structure for the amplifying fiber is configured to define the minimal acceptable bend radius for the fiber, as well as the maximum diameter that fits within the overall dimensions of the amplifier package. A pressure-sensitive adhesive coating is applied to the flexible substrate to hold the fiber in place. By using a flexible material with an acceptable insulative quality (such as a polyimide), further compactness in the final assembly is achieved by locating the electronics in a space underneath the fiber enclosure.

  • Patent number: 7758825
Abstract: A handle assembly facilitates the removal of a sterile inner tray containing sterile medical instruments from a medical kit during an OR procedure. The handle assembly may have a handle coupled with an elongated member having a male end and a female end. The inner tray may be wrapped in medical packaging. Subsequently, the elongated member may be wrapped around the inner tray and the male and female ends interconnected. The inner tray may be positioned inside of an outer tray. A bacterial barrier may be formed over a portion of the outer tray to enclose the inner tray. The inner tray, including the medical instruments, may then be sterilized by a sterilization process. During an OR procedure, the handle assemble allows a sterile nurse to remove the sterile inner tray from the non-sterile outer tray without making contact with the non-sterile outer tray and/or contaminating the sterile medical instruments.

Abstract: Dental floss packaging and a method of using same is provided, wherein a plurality of predetermined lengths of dental floss, each sufficient for a single flossing, are disposed within individual sealed compartments in the packaging. Manual force applied to a compartment urges the floss through a cover sheet thereby dispensing the floss for use. The empty compartment provides a visual indication that a particular day's flossing has been completed.

  • Patent number: 7650993
Abstract: A coreless-coil shock tube package system includes a “coreless” bundle of shock tubing, meaning that the tubing is not wrapped around a spool. The bundle may be a generally cylindrical coil of shock tubing. Optionally, two washer-like end plates abut the ends of the tubing coil for axial support. A layer of shrink-wrap or other polymer film partially covers the coil and end plates. A detonator is attached to one end of the tubing and lies tucked into the coil, through an end plate, for storage and transport. An igniter is attached to the tubing's other end. In use, the detonator is removed from the coil and attached to an explosive device. Then, the package is pulled away from the detonator and explosive, thereby uncoiling the tubing through the end plate for deployment. The igniter is actuated for igniting the shock tubing and activating the detonator and explosive.

  • Patent number: 7624867
Abstract: A method and apparatus for collecting texturized strand are disclosed. The apparatus for collecting texturized strand includes a texturizer for expanding a continuous strand of glass fibers into a wool-like product, a container for collecting the texturized strand, and a device establishing a pressure differential between an interior region of the container and a region external of the container. The texturizer includes a nozzle to which a supply of compressed air and a continuous strand are fed. The compressed air advances the strand of glass fibers through the nozzle and expands the strand so that the filaments are spread apart, thereby giving the strand a wool-type appearance. The pressure differential creating device includes a vacuum apparatus for drawing air and a screen through which the air flows. A container is placed on the screen. In the preferred embodiment, the container is a corrugated box that has upper and lower closures or flaps.

Abstract: Disclosed is a packed, highly compressed cuboid-shaped filter tow bale, the top side and bottom side of which are free from noisome curvatures or constructions. A method for producing the bale comprises the following: (a) filter tow is supplied in a compressed form: (b) the compressed filter tow is enveloped in a wrapping; (c) the wrapping is closed in an airtight manner; and (d) the wrapped bale is relieved of the load. The wrapping of such a bale is largely prevented from bursting as a result of the prevailing internal pressure.

Abstract: A yarn management system for storing, managing and transporting yarn and in-progress work pieces including a storage device or knitting bag sized to accommodate a variety of projects, for example, a full-sized project bag configured to hold multiple skeins of yarn and the associated in-progress work piece. The storage device is configured to protect the yarn and the work piece while allowing the user to periodically remove and work on the work piece, for example, to knit tangle free with multiple skeins of yarn. The storage device or bag includes an interior compartment having at least one of a divider panel which creates a first and a second storage compartment. The divider panel further includes a plurality of guide apertures through which yarn can pass from the first storage compartment to the second storage compartment.

Abstract: A method for packaging cotton sliver for efficient transport includes the steps of laying the sliver in a uniform-density pattern onto a bottom cap, placing a top cap on the sliver, applying pressure to the top and bottom caps to compress the sliver to a higher second density at which the compressed sliver is rigid, and strapping the compressed sliver and caps in order to form a rigid package for handling and transport. A packaging system includes an oblong can that receives the sliver, a compression baler for compressing the sliver to a high density, and a strapping apparatus for strapping the compressed sliver and caps to retain the compression.
