Patent number: 4606453Abstract: Two plies (20, 30) of crescent shaped material are placed in overlying relationship, with the plies being attached along their convex edges (21, 31). The concave edges (22, 32) remain unattached to each other, so that a pocket (29) is formed between the plies of material. Loops (41, 42) are formed at opposite edges of the convex edge of the plies of material. The limbs (14, 15) of eyeglasses can inserted through the loops so that the plies of material form a visor at the forehead of the wearer of the eyeglasses. In the alternative, the eyeglasses can be removed from the visor and inserted into the pocket, so that the plies of material form a case for the eyeglasses.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1985Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Inventor: Catherine T. Patent number: 4600525Abstract: A sorbent composition for reducing the stress buildup within sorbent alloys such as hydride powders being used to store hydrogen gas by imparting more of a fluid-like property to the alloys. Under the teachings of the present invention, a second powder is added to the powdered sorbent alloy to serve as a flow aid to the alloy powders so as to allow rearrangement and movement for the alloy powders with respect to each other and with respect to the sidewalls of the container. The flow aid powder which is chemically inert with respect to hydrogen and the sorbent alloys is mixed with the sorbent alloy powder and the amount of the flow aid powder is dependent upon the volume change of the particular hydride, the strength of the container, the geometry of the container, the orientation of the container, and the direction of the reaction front. The addition of the flow aid reduces densification, compaction, settling, and stress buildup during successive cycles of absorption and desorption.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1982Date of Patent: July 15, 1986Inventors: Nathaniel R. Patent number: 4432933Abstract: In processes utilizing a source of laser energy for achieving a thermonuclear fusion reaction, it is necessary to have fusion fuel prepared in a configuration with minute dimensions and the present invention contemplates preparing this fuel by introducing into hollow microspheres (typically comprised of glass) of predetermined size, in the range of 250 to 2,000 micrometers, a gaseous thermonuclear fuel. One way of accomplishing this is to cause diffusion of gaseous thermonuclear fuel through the walls of the microsphere under conditions of suitable temperature and pressure so that it may be achieved in a reasonable time, after which the fuel can be frozen out on the walls of the microsphere to provide a fusion fuel in a hollow spherical shape. Suitable coatings of additional materials may be applied to the fueled microsphere by appropriate coating methods to complete complex thermonuclear fuel pellet configurations.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1976Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: KMS Fusion, Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Patent number: 4431561Abstract: A material for reversibly storing hydrogen is formed from a lightweight matrix which is chemically and structurally modified to improve its hydrogen storage properties. The utilization of a material which can be any of a number of different disordered structures makes possible the modification of local order chemical environments of the material to increase hydrogen storage capacity and/or improve absorption and desorption properties. Lightweight modifier elements structurally modify the local chemical environments of the matrix to provide a material having an increased density of storage sites to increase hydrogen storage capacity. Transition and rare earth modifier elements structurally modify the local chemical environments to provide a material with an increased density of catalytically active sites for dissociating hydrogen molecules to increase the rate at which hydrogen absorption and desorption can be accomplished.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1982Date of Patent: February 14, 1984Assignee: Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.Inventors: Stanford R. Patent number: 4349456Abstract: Shaped and fired, porous or impermeable nonvitreous ceramic microcapsules of metal oxide, preferably transparent and polycrystalline, are made by a non-melt process comprising the liquid-liquid extraction of aqueous metal oxide precursor with a dehydrating liquid having a limited water solubility, and drying and firing the resulting gelled microcapsules. For example, an aqueous titania sol is added to an agitated body of n-butanol to form a dispersion of droplets of said sol and water is rapidly extracted from the droplets to form gelled microcapsules; the latter are recovered by filtration, dried, and fired to convert them into transparent, sealed or heat-sealable, non-vitreous ceramic, spherical microcapsules of polycrystalline titania. The microcapsules can be used as fillers for plastic and other composites or filled with a selected solid, liquid or gas for purpose of storing, transporting, or facilitating the use of the same.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1979Date of Patent: September 14, 1982Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Harold G. Patent number: 4277761Abstract: In glass bodied gas lasers which use helium as a constituent gas, the leakage of helium through the laser walls is controlled by a specially applied external sealed metal coating. The glass body of the laser is then used as a solid state helium reservoir. In addition, in all lasers with thermal problems, such as distortion and the like, this same specially applied metal coating serves to distribute the temperature evenly over the laser minimizing those thermal distortions.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1979Date of Patent: July 7, 1981Assignee: VTI, Inc.Inventors: Robert M.
