  • Patent number: 8999159
Abstract: An apparatus for removing magnetic particles from a mud slurry is disclosed, and includes one or more endless belts or chains enclosed almost wholly within a pipe. A motor drives the chain around the pipe. When the pipe is located within a mud slurry, magnetic particles in the mud slurry are drawn to the pipe and carried along the outside and away from the slurry until a collar is reached. Once separated the particles can be collected for disposal. The chain comprises a series of units linked together. Each unit includes a magnet with pole pieces at either pole to direct magnetic flux. Wear discs prevent the magnets and pole pieces from abrasion as they are drawn through the pipe. Units can be included in the chain which units do not include a magnet, thereby providing a break in the field, allowing particles to fall away from the collar region.

  • Patent number: 7632405
Abstract: An apparatus and method for carrying out the affinity separation of a target substance from a liquid test medium by mixing magnetic particles having surface immobilized ligand or receptor within the test medium to promote an affinity binding reaction between the ligand and the target substance. The test medium with the magnetic particles in a suitable container is removably mounted in an apparatus that creates a magnetic field gradient in the test medium. This magnetic gradient is used to induce the magnetic particles to move, thereby effecting mixing. The mixing is achieved either by movement of a magnet relative to a stationary container or movement of the container relative to a stationary magnet. In either case, the magnetic particles experience a continuous angular position change with the magnet.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating high density materials from less dense materials suspended in a fluid within a conduit. A pump generates carrier fluid motion which is fed through the conduit. Solids from a placer deposit are mixed with the carrier fluid and induced through a suction hose, then into two positively sloped separating chambers that are arranged in tandem in the conduit. The first separating chamber is cylindrical in shape, and motion of the fluid through the chamber is linear. The second separating chamber's cross section shape is rectangular, with a parabolic flow path. The second stage separator floor is variably banked, with the angle of bank and curvature increasing toward the discharge end. Solids, that are mixed with the carrier fluid, are forced along the flow path by dynamic drag of the fluid. Less dense solids travel up the positive slope at a greater velocity than more dense solids. The larger and slower moving dense solids are trapped in two sumps in the first chamber.

  • Patent number: 4738367
Abstract: A magnetic separator comprising a plurality of relatively aligned magnetic field generators and a belt associated with the magnetic field generators and supported to move serially through the magnetic fields generated by the magnetic field generators. The magnetic field generators are spaced relative to each other in the direction of their relative alignment a distance sufficient to produce serial gaps between the magnetic fields generated such that magnetic articles attracted to the belt by one of the magnetic fields fall away from the belt at the gaps. The magnetic separator also comprises a conveyor below the belt and supported at the gaps to receive magnetic articles falling from one of the magnetic fields and to transport the fallen magnetic articles to the next magnetic field where the magnetic articles are again attracted to the belt.

Abstract: A magnetic materials separator including an axially inclined drum disposed for axial rotation within the curvature of an arcuate magnet structure which extends axially of the drum and is disposed in close-spaced relationship with the outer surface of the drum. The magnet structure comprises an axially extending series of arcuate magnet yokes, each comprising an axially laminated array of arcuate magnet sub-assemblies which are alternately polarized in opposite axial directions. Each of the sub-assemblies comprises an arcuate magnet axially polarized and sandwiched between a arcuate pair of soft magnetic flux concentrators which have respective axial thicknesses between five and twenty percent of one-half the axial thickness of the sandwiched magnet.

  • Patent number: 4686034
Abstract: A solid waste magnetic separator having a material transport belt, a mechanism for generating a magnetic field, and a mechanism for supporting the belt so magnetic materials can be attracted to the belt and transported therewith as the belt moves through the magnetic field. The magnetic field generating mechanism comprises at least two magnetic assemblies aligned relative to each other in the direction of travel of the belt. A ferromagnetic pole shoe is disposed between the belt and the magnetic assemblies, thereby creating a relatively uniform combined magnetic field along the magnetic assemblies so that heavy magnetic materials attracted to the belt remain attracted to the belt as the belt moves through the combined magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 4504505
Abstract: A method and apparatus for magnetic removal of nutshells from nutmeats is set forth wherein whole nuts are supplied to a glue applicator where they are covered with a water soluble glue. The covered nuts are sent to a normalizer which tumbles and conveys the nut and dissolves the binder to a substantially uniform, optimally thick coating. From the normalizer, the binder nuts are fed into a dusting drum which dusts iron filings, onto the coating and the nutshell. The coated nuts leaving the dusting drum are conveyed to a cracker which cracks the nutshells to separate the nutmeats therefrom. Cracked nutshells and nutmeats leaving the cracker is sent to a magnetic separator. To separate the coated nutshells from the nutmeat, the aggregate is conveyed past a magnetized roller, the shells being pulled from the aggregate by the roller and deposited onto a conveyor which transports the shells for collection or reprocessing.

Abstract: An apparatus for forming a cloud of magnetic toner particles has a rotatable magnet roller with a number of magnetic poles disposed within a non-magnetic cylindrical sleeve. Magnetic toner particles are supplied from a hopper onto the sleeve. A magnetic bar is disposed above the sleeve. The rotation of the magnet roller causes the sleeve to carry magnetic toner particles thereon. When the magnetic toner particles carried approach to the magnetic bar, those become in a cloudy state.
