  • Patent number: 6761822
Abstract: A filter for filtering a fluid, such as lubricating oil for an engine, has a first element for trapping small particles and a second filter element for trapping sludge, the second filter element being stacked on the first filter element. A flow-deflecting element is disposed between the first filter element and second filter element to provide a spinning motion to oil flowing from the second filter element as that oil joins oil which is passed through the first filter element. The spinning motion of the oil from the bypass filter element encourages mixing of the oil from the second filter element with the oil filtered by the first element. A centrifugal separator is disposed in an annular space between the filter elements and filter housing for imparting a rotary motion to the fluid prior to the fluid passing through the filter elements. This removes large particles from the fluid by centrifugal force so that large particles do not add to the contaminant load in the filter elements.

  • Patent number: 6666968
Abstract: An oil filter assembly has an outer canister in which full flow and bypass flow filtration sections are operatively housed in a nested relationship. Oil forced into the canister has imparted thereto a vortex flow pattern which forces contaminant particles in the oil away from the full flow filter section before the oil passes therethrough. The bypass filtration section is disposed within the full flow filtration section and creates a second vortex flow pattern in the oil which induces a small portion thereof to flow through a bypass filter element while at the same time causing the entire balance of the oil to bypass this filter element and be discharged from the canister after having traversed the filtering portion of only the full flow filtration portion of the filter assembly.

Abstract: An environmentally friendly dual lube venturi filter cartridge which has no metallic components. A plastic centertube having a venturi section supports a bypass filter element on standoffs molded into the centertube. An outer concentric full flow filter element surrounds the bypass filter. The full flow filter is supported on a plastic centertube which creates a gap between it and the bypass filter. A first bypass filter endcap both seals the bypass filter and provides standoffs for allowing full flow oil around the bypass filter. The standoffs thus split the full flow which progresses through the primary filter in two paths, a primary path around the bypass filter and into the centertube, and a bypass path through the secondary filter and the venturi. Plastic upper and lower endcaps carry grooves for simple sealing gaskets, a radial seal gasket on the bottom which seals against both the endcap which carries it and a flange in the housing, and an axial seal gasket at the top.

Abstract: Apparatus for separating oil from water is provided. A container has a divider which divides the container into two tanks. These two tanks have three separate paths for the incoming run-off water, one path for a low rate of flow of the run-off water, one for an intermediate rate of flow of the water and one for a high rate of flow. The divider is a resilient plate which relies on its resilience to hold the plate in the container. The divider is a large vortex plate that divides the space in the tank. That space has a lower level than the lower end of the vortex plate. That space allows water to flow under the vortex plate to the part of the tank outside of the vortex plate. An inlet pipe feeds raw run-off water into the upper space. When water enters the container at a slow rate, it passes through a weir to an outlet. When the run-off fluid has an intermediate rate of flow more water enters the inlet tank than can pass through the small opening of the weir.

The water is passed through a first purification media (30) and then through a chamber (34) where it is exposed to ultraviolet light in the presence of titanium dioxide. The water is then passed through a second purification media (38) to a dispensing valve (40). Operating the dispensing valve (40) provides ultrapure water from the purifier having a specific resistance of at least 18.0 megohm-cm and a TOC count of less than one ppb.

  • Patent number: 5849181
Abstract: An improved catch basin is constituted by a cylindrical container with a partition dividing the internal volume into a lower compartment and an upper compartment. The partition includes an intake region and an outlet region, each communicating with a vertical pipe extending downwardly from the partition and opening into the lower treatment chamber at an intermediate location therein, the intake region and the outlet region being diametrically opposite one another. The partition defines a central, oblique ramp which urges entering liquid in the direction of the intake opening of the intake region. Thus, under conditions of low liquid flow into the catch basin, all entering liquid will be directed to the intake region, descending along the intake conduit and into the lower compartment. Conversely, under conditions of high liquid flow into the catch basin, a portion of the liquid will overrun the ramp and gain direct access to the outlet region, from which it will exit the catch basin.

  • Patent number: 5807488
Abstract: The container is made of a single blow molded piece having a pair of vertical column chambers, inlet and outlet connectors and tubes connecting the inlet and outlet connectors to circulate fluid through the vertical column chambers in series. Each container is filled with a recyclable filter medium and the container can be recycled with the filter medium. When the filter container is replaced, the entire filter container is sent for recycling. The filter container can be attached to other filter containers to form a compact filter assembly or the container can be mounted to a wall to be stored out of the way. When the containers are connected together, they can be arranged to be easily connected in series and when replacing spent filter containers, it is possible to replace only some of the containers connected in series to leave partially spent containers in the fluid circuit for further use while new containers are added to an outlet side of the containers connected in series.

  • Patent number: 5746911
Abstract: The oil is separated from the rainwater that runs off of a parking lot or off of the pavement of a filling station. An inlet tank receives the runoff water. When the water is entering that tank at a very low rate, the surface water and/or oil in the inlet tank drains to a main separation tank where the oil floats on clean water. That clean water is fed to an outlet conduit that feeds unpolluted water to the city sewer or to a river. When the inlet flow increases to an intermediate rate, a pipe of inverted L-shape feeds clean water from the inlet tank to the outlet conduit. When the inlet fluid has a very large flow rate, as might occur during a heavy downpour of rain, the fluid level in the inlet tank rises to a level at which there is a direct overflow into the outlet conduit.

  • Patent number: 5637231
Abstract: A photocatalytic oxidation and ozone catalyst system utilizes ultraviolet light and ozone in the treatment of waste and wastewater to destroy pathogens and to break down most hydrocarbons and other chemicals into non-hazardous forms. The wastewater enters the system for initial treatment and is also pumped through the venturi loop and is exposed to ultraviolet light. The ozone interacts at the venturi before the ultraviolet light is being used as a catalyst by the ultraviolet light to break apart the double bonds of ketones, aldehydes, esters, and carboxylic acids. Following initial treatment, the wastewater is pumped into the pressurized ozone enhancement vessel where vapor oxidation of the polluting chemicals occurs. The enhancement vessel comprises a liquid spray component and a series of ozone resonator plates having ozone distribution manifolds that spray the wastewater with ozone. The plates have angular channels formed therein through which the wastewater passes.

Abstract: A hemodialysis apparatus is supplied with dialysis fluid or a dialysis fluid component through a supply loop conduit 12. A shut-off device 22, such as a magnetic valve, is arranged between the apparatus and the supply conduit 12. A buffer volume is enclosed between the shut-off device and an additionally arranged shut-off device such as a non-return valve. During disinfection of the apparatus, in order to prevent disinfecting fluid from flowing back into the supply loop conduit and therewith an endangering other dialysis apparatus connected to the same supply loop conduit, in the event that the shut-off device 22 leaks, the buffer volume is pressurized to a defined pressure, which is preferably higher than the pressure in the surrounding conduit sections. This pressure is detected by a pressure sensor P. The signal generated by the pressure sensor P is monitored by a microprocessor 28.
