Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for separating particles and dissolved matter from a produced water fluid stream. Specifically, the present invention includes a first pressure source which transports untreated produced water or contaminated aqueous fluid into a separator annulus with a filter element disposed therein. The untreated fluid is placed under appropriate pressure sufficient to produce turbulent flow, increased particle kinetics and/or cavitation allowing the desired fluid to penetrate and pass into and through the, filter media. The treated fluid is then transported to a collection tank. The contaminant matter retained by the filter media may be removed by the nearly instantaneous reverse pressurization of the separator annulus by a second pressure source thereby removing the contaminant particles away from contact with the filter media, and which may then be transported to a waste collection tank or a separator for further treatment.

Abstract: A system using membranes for separating a desired component from a liquid or gas mixture to obtain a high-concentration organic solvent, such as in a plant for fermenting a biomass feedstock (e.g., corn or sugarcane) to produce ethanol. A module for removing water from the ethanol/water mixture comprises multiple vessels or elements connected together in series and supported by a frame. Each element includes a number of flow tubes concentrically enclosing a tubular membrane leaving an annular space between the membrane's outer wall and the flow tube's inner wall. The preferred membrane is a hollow ceramic (e.g., zeolite) tube. An ethanol/water vapor is passed through the space between the tube walls, and a vacuum is pulled on the membrane's hollow core. Water molecules selectively move through the membrane. Multiple passes through a series of elements having the concentric tubes and membranes gradually reduces the water content of the ethanol.

A blood separation device has an inlet for passing fluid thereinto and an outlet for removing fluid therefrom. A pump system is provided for moving fluid into and out of the device. In use, blood is conveyed into the device, where platelets are separated from at least a portion of the blood. A controller determines the amount of platelets in the device. Based at least in part on the amount of platelets in the device, corrective action is taken to avoid platelet aggregation in the device. The corrective action may be conveying an elevated amount of anticoagulant into the blood and/or the device and may be initiated when the determined amount of platelets approaches, meets, or exceeds a threshold predicted likelihood of platelet aggregation.
