Abstract: The present invention refers to a system for inducing an immune response against transformed, infected, or diseased tissue comprising a device for removing only components present in blood or plasma having a molecular weight of 120,000 daltons or less, having an inlet and outlet for connection to a pump and tubing to recirculate the blood or plasma of a patient through the device. Further, the present invention refers to methods of inducing an immune response against transformed, infected, or diseased tissue comprising administering to a patient blood, plasma, or a blood fraction from which only components having a molecular weight of 120,000 daltons or less have been removed, whereby administration of said blood, plasma, or blood fraction induces an immune response against transformed, infected, or diseased tissue in the patient until the transformed, infected, or diseased tissue is reduced in amount.
Abstract: This invention uses “Targeted Apheresis” to treat patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and other autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. “Targeted Apheresis” is a process whereby only the pathogenic and pro-inflammatory elements associated with the disease symptoms are simultaneously and selectively removed from the blood by passing the blood through an extracorporeal affinity device containing selective binding agents. Removal of these pathogenic and pro-inflammatory elements will ameliorate the symptoms of autoimmune disease and may prolong the period of disease remission.
Abstract: An apparatus and methods for converting seawater to drinking water at room temperature include using the processes of osmosis, vacuum stripping, nanofiltration, ion exchange, and breakpoint chlorination, to provide a low-cost alternative to prior seawater conversion methods.
Abstract: Systems and methods for cleansing blood are disclosed herein. The methods include acoustically separating undesirable particles bound to capture particles from formed elements of whole blood. After introducing the capture particles to whole blood containing undesirable particles, the whole blood and capture particles are flowed through a microfluidic separation channel. At least one bulk acoustic transducer is attached to the microfluidic separation channel. A standing acoustic wave, imparted on the channel and its contents by the bulk acoustic transducer, drives the formed elements and undesirable particles bound to capture particles to specific aggregation axes. After aggregating the particles, the formed elements exit the separation channel through a first outlet and are returned to the patient. The undesirable particles, bound to the capture particles, exit through a second outlet and can be discarded to saved for later study.

Abstract: A water treatment apparatus comprises a chamber divided by a partition into a treatment section and an outlet section. The treatment section may, for example, contain a filter media including organic material which supports a shrub or tree. Runoff water enters the treatment section over an inlet chamber which forms a bridge over the outlet section. During heavy flow conditions, some of the incoming water overflows inlet bypass weirs to pass directly to the outflow section, bypassing the filter media in the treatment section.

The invention utilizes within a container substructure a filter employing a combination of specially selected filtration and ion exchange media and a structural design of equipment for substantially or totally providing and/or rendering Class A waste forms and preventing the formation of Class B, C and GTCC waste forms. Abstract: Selenium-containing water containing ions of a metal which is nobler than titanium and which is a coexisting substance is stably and efficiently treated. A pretreatment of removing ions of the metal nobler than titanium from the selenium-containing water is performed prior to the reduction treatment of selenium with the mixture of metallic titanium and the simple metal baser than titanium. In a reduction treatment step of selenium, noble metal ions in the selenium-containing water are reduced on the surfaces of particles of metallic titanium in a titanium/base metal mixture to form precipitates, which adhere to the surfaces of the metallic titanium particles, resulting in the decrease in efficiency of a reduction reaction. This problem can be solved in such a manner that the noble metal ions are removed prior to the reduction treatment of selenium.

Abstract: A horizontal flow water treatment method and wetland biofilter apparatus provides a chamber with impermeable outer walls spaced away from permeable interior walls of a media filtration bed such that a catch basin is formed between the outer walls and the interior walls. The catch basin creates an open area around the perimeter of the interior walls for influent water to fill within the open area on all sides before penetrating the filtration media, providing a large surface area for influent water to interact with the media filtration bed. The influent water enters the catch basin in a horizontal flow path to provide for pre-settling of particulates before making contact with the filtration media. The biofilter design increases the available surface area of the media filtration bed by up to four times for a given volume of water, and thereby minimizes the loading or infiltration rate on the media filtration bed.

Coating agents such as alcohols, glycols, polyols, vegetable oil, and mineral oils may help apply the nanoparticles to the particle surfaces in the filter beds or packs.
