  • Patent number: 6669838
Abstract: An apparatus for filtering and sterilizing water utilizing a turbidity and microorganism sensing system. The apparatus includes a UV light source that emits UV and visible light and light sensors. The light sensors include visible light detectors and light pipes that are impregnated with a fluorescent dye to covert UV light to visible light. The turbidity level is assessed by the detection of visible light passing through the water flow path while the microorganism levels are assessed by the detection of visible light that has been converted from UV light passing through the water flow path. The light sensors are in communication with a microprocessor which evaluates the intensity of the visible light and UV light. The microprocessor compares these intensities to a UV and visible light intensity standard to determine whether the water has been properly filtered and irradiated.

  • Patent number: 6001242
Abstract: A method and apparatus for filtering particulates from a turbid liquid is provided. The apparatus is preferably used to filter particulates from water used to flush a pipeline after a cleaning operation, after hydrostatic testing or during product displacement at a high flow rate. The apparatus includes an inlet valve for receiving the turbid liquid from a liquid source connected to a gas buster for discharging the turbid liquid and air into a break tank located beneath the gas buster. A self-cleaning portable liquid filter having an inlet is connected to an outlet of the break tank and includes a screen filter for receiving the turbid liquid from the break tank. Particulates from the turbid water are accumulated on an internal surface of the screen filter and clean water is discharged from the filter through a discharge port. A flush mechanism is provided to rinse the accumulated particulate cake from the surface of the screen filter upon actuation of an automatic rinse cycle.

  • Patent number: 5866071
Abstract: A new type of centrifuge tube convenient for separation after density gradients centrifugation is invented. The inner bottom of the centrifuge tube is in a funnel shape, and an orifice is located at the narrowest place of the funnel neck. The orifice connects to a small tube, which is built inside the centrifuge tube wall and spanning the entire length of the centrifuge tube. The centrifuge tube can be used either as a centrifuge tube or a separation funnel. Such a tube not only saves time but also improves the efficiency of separation after density gradients centrifugation, because the built-in small tube is capable of performing separation by means of siphonic effect.

  • Patent number: 4867877
Abstract: A waste removal and/or segregation system for removing liquid and solid waste simultaneously from waste-holding tanks or vessels. The solid matter in the waste is filtered or segregated into one holding area and the liquid waste placed in a separate holding vessel so that each waste material may be independently disposed of in accordance with current EPA requirements. A separation or filtration element is interposed between a conventional liquid waste removal system including a container for the liquid waste and the nozzle applied to the waste material containing both solid and liquid matter. This vessel has an inlet connected to the nozzle and an outlet connected to the vacuum source through the liquid waste storage tank. The novel vessel of this invention has a filtration system that permits the liquid waste to exit for independent disposal while retaining solid matter for independent disposal.

  • Patent number: 4400274
Abstract: A separator for separating low and high density constituents of a liquid includes a tank. The tank has a liquid inlet, an opposing liquid outlet and an upper side drain. A filter is mounted in the tank adjacent the inlet for filtering its discharging liquids. An input dam is located downstream of the filter and extends upward a given height. The drain is positioned to draw from locations downstream of the dam. In one embodiment, the tank has a top panel extending across the tank, its upper edge near the drain. The panel is inclined upwardly to cause an upward liquid flow. An internal baffle may be mounted across the tank between the the outlet and the panel. This baffle is spaced from the bottom of the tank to provide an upwardly accelerating liquid flow.

  • Patent number: 3948768
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for separating fine oily particles from aqueous liquids at very high flow velocities by passing the mixture upwardly through an unconfined mass of oleophilic granules in a column with adequate velocity to separate and lift the individual granules into the upwardly flowing mixture within the column where movement of the individual granules serves to collect and coalesce the fine oily particles, and finally to release large oil drops back into the mainstream of the upwardly flowing mixture column. These large oil drops are then intercepted and extracted by a steeply inclined screen and caused to flow to storage in the form of a fine oil film propelled by the force of the flow of the aqueous liquid through the screen.

  • Patent number: 3948767
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for separating oily particles from an emulsion thereof in an aqueous liquid. The emulsion is passed through a bed of oleophilic granules supported on a foraminous support, the oleophilic granules, by virtue of their density, pressing against the foraminous support and the bed is unconfined downstream thereof so that the granules in the bed are fluidized by the passage of liquid therethrough. The oily particles are removed from the emulsion by the oleophilic granules in the bed, and the oily material accumulates and agglomerates and is transported out of the bed by the passage of liquid therethrough. The movement of the liquid then carries the oily droplets which are formed in the bed and deposits them upon a screen positioned downstream of the bed, the aqueous liquid passing through the screen in purified form. The oil accumulates on the screen and is propelled by the moving liquid into an oil reservoir positioned downstream of the screen.
