    Abstract: A rotary drum filter of the pipe machine type has a stationary vacuum breaker valve-discharge elbow assembly at the discharge end of the drum which defines a streamlined, smoothly curving, and substantially unobstructed discharge flow passage with gradually changing flow cross sectional areas. The valve member includes a valve closure segment at its inlet end that is structurally connected to the annular outlet end flange and sealing rim by an extension segment which forms a continuation of the valve segment. The cross sectional shapes and areas of the flow passage at the valve outlet and discharge elbow inlet are the same, but the area gradually increases in a direction toward the outlet of the elbow, and the shape gradually changes from a segmented circle to a full circle in the same direction.

    Abstract: A center valve rotary drum filter includes radially disposed baffles or vanes which extend in the center valve opening from axial surface channels to a central drainage conduit. The center valve rotary drum filter further includes a curved flow passage between the flow-confining walls. In a preferred case, the curved flow passage comprises a concavely curved, cone-like member having a broad proximal base and a narrow distal end. The base end is directed toward the one of the radial flow-confining walls opposite the entrance to the drainage conduit, the distal end being directed toward the central axis of the drainage conduit.

This liquid displaces suspension fluid contained in the web and the latter is urged with the aid of a drained fluid pipe system to a washing step located upstream in the web's direction of travel and the displaced suspension fluid repeats the displacement washing process performed by the pure washing liquid in the last washing step. This procedure is repeated until each washing step has received a flow of washing liquid. To utilize the concentration raising capacity of the washing procedure and apparatus, before discharging the pulp, part of the drained fluid pipe system is emptied and the drained fluid therefrom obtained is returned to an earlier washing step.

Upon the periodic application of a vacuum to the valve chambers, filtrate is delivered from the exterior of the drum through an associated bucket and plastic drainage conduit to an associated valve chamber.     Abstract: A fully submerged rotatable drum type of filter has a perforate cylindrical surface through which contaminated liquid is pulled by a suction pump. A backwashing system for cleaning the perforate surface of the drum comprises a non-rotating channel which establishes sliding and sealing contact with a limited number of the open ends of the peripheral chambers to cause pressurized filtered backwashing liquid to flow into such peripheral chambers to remove filter cake from the perforate surface by the reverse flow therethrough. Filtration can therefore proceed through a majority of the peripheral chambers simultaneously with the backwashing operation through the limited number of peripheral chambers in communication with the backwashing system.

    Abstract: A rotary pressure precoat filter system is described containing an interior valving arrangement which increases the gas flow resistance through that region of the precoat from which solids have been removed but which has not yet been reimmersed in the slurry to be filtered. The valving system comprises a fixed baffle positioned adjacent to the outlet end of conduits passing from the collection chambers inside the surface of the filter drum to the interior of a hollow central shaft, which is journaled in bearings outside the pressure vessel and which provides direct access to a receiver also outside the pressure vessel.

    Abstract: Filter drum having its surface divided by longitudinal division strips into a plurality of separate filtration sectors each of which is provided with a plurality of lead and trail ports. In each sector, all lead ports communicate with a single manifold through ports in the manifold wall, the manifold is in turn connected to a filter valve by a single conduit; and all trail ports register with ports in another manifold in turn connected by a single conduit to the filter valve. The manifolds are formed as rectangular conduits secured to the inside of the drum wall and extending the full length thereof. The boundaries between adjacent manifolds are located under division strips. The manifold for a given sector is physically located next to the manifold connected to the lead port for the next succeeding adjacent sector. The ports are formed as elongated slots in the drum deck as close as possible and parallel to the division strip.

The filter assembly is used to filter liquids from a taconite or other particulate slurry.

The liquid to be filtered is introduced into the drum at one end thereof, and the drum is supported so that it is partially submerged in the filtered liquid.
