    Abstract: A fuel filter for an engine includes a housing having an interior space and is assembled into a fuel flow path between a source of fuel and the engine. The housing includes a passageway which has an inlet aperture which is used to control the delivery of fuel to either the engine or back to the source of fuel. The housing also includes a return-fuel passageway which is in flow communication with the interior space and is adapted to couple to the source of fuel. A filter cartridge is installed within the housing and includes an end cap with an air vent tube having an inlet opening. The air vent tube is designed so as to assemble into the passageway, so as to plug the inlet aperture. Once the inlet aperture is plugged by the air vent tube, the flow entrance to the passageway is raised from the inlet aperture to the inlet opening of the air vent tube. The plugging of the inlet aperture by the air vent tube allows fuel to be delivered to the engine.

    Abstract: A coolant filter kit, for attaching in-line to a coolant hose of a combustion engine, includes a fluid conduit member and a coolant filter apparatus. The fluid conduit member has a stem and two opposed branches connected to the stem, with an inlet formed in a first branch thereof, and an outlet formed in a second branch. The fluid conduit member further has a partition in the stem thereof, substantially separating a first flow chamber from a second flow chamber therewithin. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a limited amount of fluid is allowed to flow directly from the inlet to the outlet without passing through the filter apparatus. The filter apparatus includes a hollow housing defining a filter chamber therein. A porous cylindrical filter element is disposed in the filter chamber of the housing. Optionally, the filter apparatus may include a slow-dissolving tablet or plug for releasing a supplemental coolant additive into coolant over time.

An annular support member from the cover is received in the annular channel to support the upper end cap. Latching fingers on the upper end cap and a mating ring on the cover removably couple the cartridge to the cover. The cartridge further includes a recharge canister supported by tabs on the upper and lower end caps. Fluid is recharged by inhibitor material, while particulates and other contaminants are removed by the filter media.

In this closed condition, fuel is unable to enter the hollow centerpost body and is thus unable to be delivered to the engine.

    Abstract: A filter element for a fuel filter includes an outer, coalescing filter media and an inner, water-absorbing filter media. The outer media normally filters or separates particles from the fuel system and coalesces water in the fuel. As the outer media degrades through use and water penetrates to the inner media, the inner media absorbs the water to act as a back-up for the outer filter media. As the inner media absorbs water, the inner media expands to restrict the fuel flow therethrough. At a predetermined pressure differential across the inner media, a by-pass device in the inner filter media opens or otherwise allows fluid from the outer filter media to bypass the inner filter media. Although the by-pass device provides a fluid path around the inner media, the outer media maintains its particle filtration efficiency of the fuel at a high level.
