Abstract: The invention relates to a filter cloth intended for a filter which has a variable volume and is based on diaphragm extrusion, particularly for a Larox®-type vertical pressure filter. The filtering properties of the filter cloth (5) are substantially similar in both directions through the cloth since slurry containing liquid and solids is alternately placed on the different sides of the filter cloth. The filter cloth of the invention comprises a middle layer (15) and protective layers (16a, 16b; 17a, 17b) provided on both outer surfaces of the middle layer. The middle layer can have e.g. a woven structure, and the protective layers may be batt fiber layers attached to the middle layer by needling. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the protective layers according to the invention are denser than the middle layer.

Abstract: This invention provides a process for making microporous membranes from a polymer solution and the membranes therefrom. A thermal assist, such as heating of the polymer solution can be effected subsequent to shaping the solution, such as by forming a film, tube or hollow fiber of the solution under conditions that do not cause phase separation.. In a preferred embodiment, the formed solution is briefly heated to generate a temperature gradient through the body of the formed solution. The polymer in solution then is precipitated to form a microporous structure. The formation of a wide variety of symmetric and asymmetric structures can be obtained using this process. Higher temperatures and/or longer heating times effected during the heating step result in larger pore sizes and different pore gradients in the final membrane product.

More particularly, this invention pertains to advanced composite filtration media and advanced composite filtration media products comprised of a functional filtration component, such as a biogenic silica product (e.g., diatomite), a natural glass product (e.g., expanded perlite), or a natural or synthetic crystalline mineral (e.g., titanium dioxide), which is thermally sintered to a matrix component, such as an engineering polymer (e.g., glasses, natural or synthetic crystalline minerals, thermoplastics, and metals) or a suitable natural material (e.g., rice hull ash, sponge spicules) that has a softening temperature below that of the functional filtration component. This invention also relates to advanced composite media and advanced composite media products, generally, which are also useful in non-filtration applications.

  • Patent number: 6524485
Abstract: A polymer-micelle complex is disclosed. The polymer-micelle complex includes a micelle having a negative charge. The negatively charged micelle is bound electrostatically to a polymer bearing a positive charge. The complex can be in turn electrostatically bound to a siliceous material so that the complex is immobilized on the siliceous material. In addition, a composition comprising a negatively charged micelle, a positively charged polymer, and an aqueous carrier is disclosed. The aqueous carrier can exhibit salinity. In the composition, the micelle and polymer can electrostatically interact so as to form a polymer-micelle complex (which can either be soluble in the aqueous carrier or in the form of a precipitate or coacervate), or, alternatively, the polymer and micelle can remain separate such that a complex is not formed therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6514409
Abstract: A hollow fiber membrane made of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol polymer, comprises a dense layer existing in the inner surface and a porous layer existing in the layer other than the dense layer, wherein the hollow fiber membrane has a porosity of 60 to 90%, an overall mass transfer coefficient for myoglobin in a water-based system of not less than 0.003 cm/min., and a rejection rate for albumin in a bovine blood system of not less than 97%. The EVA hollow fiber membrane is useful for hemopurification membranes such as hemodialysis membranes, hemodiafiltration membranes, hemofiltration membranes and continuous hemofiltration membranes, and a process for producing the same.

Abstract: A hydrophilic membrane that includes a hydrophobic polymer and a water-soluble polymer-metal complex is provided. This membrane is made by heating a mixture of a hydrophobic polymer, a metal compound, and a water-soluble polymer. The water-soluble polymer forms complexes with the metal compound and homogeneously entangles with the dissolved hydrophobic polymer to form a viscous dope. The dope is extruded through an annular orifice to form a hollow fiber. The fiber is put in an environment having a controlled humidity so that it becomes partially solidified, and then, the fiber is put in a coagulation bath. The hollow fiber is formed by phase inversion in the coagulation bath and is collected using a take-up wheel that is partially immersed in a leaching bath.

  • Publication number: 20020179523
Abstract: According to the present invention there is provided a ceramic foam filter for molten metal filtration comprising a preferably substantially flat inlet portion, an intermediate portion and an outlet portion that incorporates an undulating surface defining peaks and valleys. Making the outlet portion or surface irregular as described herein provides paths for entrapped air to escape or vent during start-up, thereby significantly reducing or eliminating the need for potentially harmful corrective action, such as rapping, to achieve a rapid filter start-up.
