  • Publication number: 20130186576
Abstract: Evaporation technology is commonly used to to treat process waters that contain low solubility salts. The technology typically used is a brine boncentrator which uses seeded slurry techniques internal to the falling film evaporator which allows these scaling salts to co-precipitate with the seed crystals instead of scaling on the heat transfer surface. Such systems often employ hydroclones to recover and recycle seed crystals that would otherwise leave the process with the brine blowdown stream. These hydroclones (or other separation devices) often have regions of tight clearance that are susceptible to plugging which can lead to suboptimal process availability and greater maintenance obligations. The inventors have developed an apparatus called a “settling chamber” for separating large solid particles from the feed stream to the hydroclone to eliminate plugging, improve availability and reduce maintenance requirements.

  • Patent number: 8491854
Abstract: A test tube insert includes a flange having a width greater than a width of a mouth of a larger test tube into which the insert is to be inserted. The flange defines a first central opening. An annulus extends integrally downward from the flange. The annulus includes a fenestrated wall and a floor defining a second central opening. A small test tube body, smaller than the larger test tube, extends integrally downward from the floor of the annulus with the second central opening forming a mouth of the small test tube body. The test tube insert is disposed in the mouth of the larger test tube. Fluid is transferred through the central opening and the fluid fills the small test tube body of the test tube insert and flows through the fenestrated wall once the small test tube body is full into the larger test tube.

  • Publication number: 20130140249
Abstract: A method of delivering feed, for example a paraffinic solvent treated bitumen froth, to a separation vessel, for example a froth separation unit (FSU). The feed is delivered from one or more inlets into the side of a series of parallel plates that form a series of channels which may be either vertical or inclined at an intermediate angle. This feed inlet flow conditioning system is characterized by a Channel Reynolds number of less than 3000. Such inlet flow conditioning is particularly useful where the feed has particles with a bi-modal size distribution to be separated from an overflow stream. The low Reynolds number combined with the influence of the walls serves to mitigate the upward flux of the smaller particles, for example mineral solids, by trapping the smaller particles within a matrix of larger particles, for example precipitated asphaltene aggregates.

Abstract: A system includes a controller and an apparatus that includes a housing having a volume and an inlet. The inlet can receive a fluid that includes a gas and a liquid. The apparatus also includes a baffle that partitions the volume into a first portion and a second portion. The baffle extends from a base of the housing. The first portion can receive the liquid and separate the liquid into a first part and a second part. The second portion can receive the second part of the liquid from the first portion. The controller regulates an amount of the second part of the liquid in the second portion such that a level of the second part of the liquid is higher than a height that the baffle extends from the base of the housing, thus enabling the use of the extra surge capacity in the vessel.

  • Publication number: 20130112630
Abstract: Methods and systems for separating component materials of a suspension are disclosed. In one aspect, a suspension suspected of containing a target material and a secondary fluid are added to a tube. The secondary fluid has a greater density than the suspension, is immiscible in the suspension fluid and is inert with respect to the suspension materials. A float is added to the tube, and the tube, float, suspension and secondary fluid are centrifuged together, with the secondary fluid to occupy the bottom of the tube. The float has a density less than the density of the secondary fluid which enables the float to be suspended within the axially layered materials of the suspension. As a result, the float expands the axial length of the layer containing the target material between the outer surface of the float and the inner surface of the tube.

  • Patent number: 8141718
Abstract: A separation device for the separation of constituents of different density, in particular of a fluid fed from a well hole, exhibits a container in which the fluid at least partially after entry via a feed line is separated into its constituents using centrifugal force in the radial direction and/or using gravitational force in the vertical direction. To improve this type of separation device such that it can be constructed more compact and in a constructively more simple manner and also that it simultaneously can reliably enable separation of all constituents and their removal from the separation device, a classifier device is arranged in a lower section of the container interior, which at least exhibits one discharge line, extending radially outwards, for the discharge of the fluid into the container interior and delivery lines, joined to the container interior at different levels in the vertical direction, for the separated fluid constituents.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating a first fluid from a fluid mixture. In one embodiment water containing methane is passed through an agitation chamber with a plate at the chamber's proximal and distal ends. Both plates have orifices permitting the mixed fluid to pass into and out of the agitation chamber. In one embodiment, the mixed fluid rotates about its axis of flow through the agitation chamber. In one embodiment, the mixed fluid passes through a separation chamber having a plurality of baffles that promote separation of the methane from the methane/water mixture. In one embodiment, the separated methane is removed from the water in a collection chamber that facilitates gravity separation of the mixed fluids. In one embodiment, liquid hydrocarbon is removed from water.
