Patent number: 4782967Abstract: A system for simultaneously rupturing and carrying away a breakable foil seal and packing from a medicine vial or other container which incorporates a string attached to the foil seal with one end exterior of the foil seal and the other attached to the packing. The exterior end serves as a pull tab or can be attached to another item which serves the same purpose. When pulled, the string first ruptures the foil seal, then carries it away along with the packing. The pull tab may be length of string, additional foil layers of the seal or the vial lid. The system is designed to facilitate access to the contents of the vial by individuals lacking dexterity due to age, illness or amputation.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1987Date of Patent: November 8, 1988Inventor: Robert E. Patent number: 4782941Abstract: For intensive cleaning of both lenses and frames of glasses, a cleaning vessel is provided having a cover which sealingly contains a cleaning fluid for receiving the glasses. A holder provided in the vessel for retaining different lengths of spectacles so they are centered in the vessel. The holder may be secured to the underside of the cover or in the bottom of the vessel or there may be holders in both locations. The holders are cupped outwardly relative to the interior of the vessel and centrally disposed to retain the spectacles permanently away from the sides of the vessel. The holders may be composed of a resilient material, cage-shaped or may be bellows so as to be self-adjustable for different sizes of spectacles. For different purposes, the vessels may be circular or oval in cross-section or have sides which as seen in cross-section, coincide with the outer peripheries of crossed ovals.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1987Date of Patent: November 8, 1988Inventor: Siegfried Freise

Patent number: 4625886Abstract: A device for sealing the surface of a liquid in a cylindrical can having an annular lid retaining rim at its upper end defining an opening in the can. The device comprises a rigid circular disk of light weight material sized to pass freely through the opening in the can defined by the rim and float upon the surface of the liquid until a skin forms upon the surface of the liquid between the peripheral edge of the disk and the associated sidewall of the can. A radially disposed cutter is secured at its inner end to its central portion of the disk adjacent the upper surface of the disk. The cutter extends radially outwardly from the center of the disk and has a cutting blade at its outer end located in close proximity to the circular peripheral edge of the disk. A handle on the cutting element intermediate its ends facilitates rotation of the cutting element relative to the disk to move the cutting edge of the blade in cutting engagement with the skin formed on the surface of the liquid.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1986Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Inventor: Nancy K. Eisenman

Patent number: 4482072Abstract: A closure for partially filled containers which has an interconnecting opening from outside of the container to the unfilled portion of the inside of the container and bladder which is inflatable within the container. A valve apparatus is located within the opening within the closure which, when actuated by an operator, allows pressurized air to enter the inflatable bladder. A simple hand operated pump apparatus can readily provide pressurized air to inflate the bladder. A simple method of depressurizing the expanded bladder is provided by simply depressing an extended portion of the valve apparatus releasing the pressurized air from within the bladder.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1983Date of Patent: November 13, 1984Inventor: Ronald W. Hankins

Patent number: 4418826Abstract: A space filler designed to be disposed within a space in a filled container between the contents of the container and a closure cap for the container to minimize unwanted movement of the contents of the container, wherein the space filler comprises a base member to rest on the top of the contents of the container and a plurality of resilient spacer arms projecting upwardly from the base member, at least some of the resilient spacer arms being so shaped and dimensioned so that when in use they are compressed and deformed and make contact both with the inner surface of the top of the closure cap and with the inside side surface of the container.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1982Date of Patent: December 6, 1983Assignee: Johnsen & Jorgensen LimitedInventors: Gerardo Mancini, Richard J. Searle, Eugene E. Davis

Patent number: 4416382Abstract: A container for the transport and storage of metallic mercury (Hg). A plastic thimble having a small opening in the upper side wall is disposed in the neck of the container to prevent oxidation of the mercury in the container and to retain mercury that would otherwise leak out due to expansion.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1982Date of Patent: November 22, 1983Assignee: Bethlehem Apparatus Company, Inc.Inventors: James B. Lawrence, Bruce J. Lawrence

Patent number: 4392578Abstract: An improved stopper apparatus for bottles, such as wine bottles, which prevents contamination of the contents therein. The improved stopper apparatus comprises a stopper plug, a bladder attached thereto, a venting valve for venting gas within the bottle, a pump for inflating the bladder and a reservoir valve and inert gas reservoir. The bladder is inserted into the bottle and the stopper plug secured within the neck thereof. The bladder is filled within the bottle forcing the gas therein to escape through the venting valve. The stopper apparatus is adapted to enable a small quantity of heavy inert gas to be deposited into the bottle from the inner gas reservoir prior to filling the bladder, whereby to form a protective layer of inert gas over the surface of the bottle's contents.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1981Date of Patent: July 12, 1983Inventors: Beverly A. Fipp, Bernard E. Fipp, John L. Haller

Patent number: 4211328Abstract: A package for solid or pasty goods which have a tendency to adhere to the packaging material has a closure in which on the side facing the packaged goods a plurality of separate, independent cavities (1, 21, 31) have been provided. The cavities are separated from each other by ribs (2) or flat surfaces. The ribs or flat surfaces shut off the cavities containing air or gas by their contact with the surface of the packaged goods. As a result of the cavities not filled with the packaged article, the force required for taking off the closure is reduced and no or hardly any parts of the packaged article such as e.g. margarine keep adhering to the closure. The closure can consist of deep-drawn or embossed film or can have been made by embossing of cardboard coated with plastics.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1979Date of Patent: July 8, 1980Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventor: Pal I. Petranyi

Patent number: 4065018Abstract: An improved closure for fragile containers substantially filled with a gassy liquid, said closure comprising a combination of a cap for the container and a volumetric member partially within said cap and partially extending into the interior of the container. The volumetric member displaces and contains free gas generated by the gassy liquid thereby substantially reducing or completely eliminating the explosive potential of the container. The volumetric member is characterized by means that facilitate drainage of the gassy liquid should the liquid enter the member such as by expansion caused by elevated temperatures or inversion or shaking of the container.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1976Date of Patent: December 27, 1977Assignee: William J. MegowenInventors: William J. Megowen, Harvey M. Cohen

Patent number: 3998349Abstract: A closure for fragile containers of gassy liquids having a depending volumetric member extending down into the interior of the container to displace free gas from within the container, thereby substantially reducing or completely eliminating the chance of an explosion should the container be broken. The member occupies a volume such that when the container is filled with a usual amount of liquid either all free gas is purged by introducing the member or a small volume of free gas is left not exceeding the amount by which the liquid will expand if heated to the highest temperature normally expected to be encountered in use. The member is either a hollow, flexible walled body or composed of a cellular foam so as to be compressible under liquid thermal expansion forces to relieve excess pressure on the container, or is a hollow body provided with a small opening to admit liquid under expansionary pressures. The container is sealed by the member either in cooperation or in unitary construction with a cap.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1972Date of Patent: December 21, 1976Inventor: William J. Megowen
