  • Patent number: 4645088
Abstract: A one-piece plastic cap for the application to the externally threaded neck of a bottle has an end wall with a concave inner side which is provided with at least one elastic annular lip bearing against the end face of the neck when the internal thread or threads of the skirt of the cap mate with the external thread or threads of the neck. The configuration of the lip is such that the sealing action between its annular edge and the end face of the neck increases with increasing pressure in the interior of the bottle. The external surface of the end wall is formed with reinforcing ribs which radiate from the center of the end wall and can also extend along the exterior of the internally concave intermediate portion connecting the marginal portion of the end wall with the skirt. The ribs prevent pronounced expansion of the end wall and/or intermediate portion of the cap in response to establishment of a pronounced pressure differential between the interior and the exterior of the sealed bottle.

  • Patent number: 4637519
Abstract: A two part closure for a container is comprised of a flexible foil sealing disk together with a flanged linerless screw threaded closure cap. The cap's sealing flanges contact the flexible foil sealing disk on opposite edges of the container's mouth rim and, as the cap is screwed down, these flanges bring the flexible foil sealing disk into continuous, intimate sealing contact with the container rim. Additionally, the inner closure flange draws the portion of the flexible foil sealing disk situated within the container mouth tight to eliminate creases and wrinkles in the foil sealing disk. Once the closure has been opened and the foil sealing disk removed, the container can be resealed by using the flanged linerless closure cap.

  • Patent number: 4598835
Abstract: A one-piece plastics closure for a carbonated beverage bottle has a sealing ring (17) pivotally attached at the junction between its closure panel (10) and dependant skirt (11). The sealing ring is forked, having two annular and mutually divergent fins 20,21. The upper fin (20) is engaged by the free end of the container neck as the closure is fitted, and by pivotal movement of the sealing ring brings the lower fin (21) into sealing relation with the side surface of the container finish. The resilience of the closure material and the substantial deformation to which the sealing ring is subject thereafter maintain the effectiveness of the seal despite creep and backing-off of the closure which may occur.

  • Patent number: 4560077
Abstract: A plastic closure cap particularly suited for use in situations which require a tight seal such as with carbonated beverage containers is disclosed. A pair of sealing flanges extend downwardly and outwardly from an inner surface of the top of the closure cap. These sealing flanges have a horizontal seal interference distance which increases with increased cap size to maintain an effective sealing function. Seal flange back up abutment surfaces are contacted by the free ends of the seal flanges and limit the deflection of the flanges thus causing the seal flanges to wrap around the container mouth as the cap is secured to the bottle. A load stop ring is positioned between, and separated from the seal flanges on the inner surface of the closure cap and contacts the container neck when the closure is in place. The sealing flanges include vent slots which increase the safety and convenience of the closure cap.

  • Patent number: 4526284
Abstract: A closure for a container comprises a top 11 with a depending skirt 12 having an internal screw thread. Where the skirt joins the top, the internal surface 15 of the skirt is conically flared in a direction away from the top, and a flexible resilient fin 18 extends from the underside of the top substantially parallel to the flared surface 15. The free end portion of the fin is thickened as by the provision of a broad rib 23 on the radially inner surface of the fin. When the closure is secured on to a container, the fin 18 becomes defirmed outward and is sufficiently long to extend round the outer corner portion of the top of the container and is pressed into tight sealing engagement with said outer corner portion by the flared surface. The increased thickness of the free end portion of the fin causes it to resist expansion and to hug more closely the corner portion of the top of the container.

  • Patent number: 4489845
Abstract: A screw-cap (1) for closing a container mouth has a sealing lip (5), which is affixed to the cap top (4). The inner side-wall (7) of the sealing lip (5) has a diameter (A) which is greater than the outer diameter (B) of the container outer wall (8). A clamping device, which can be designed as an inner seal (13), creates a contraction of the cap top when the screw-cap is screwed on to the container, by which means the sealing lip (5) is pressed against the container mouth (8). In this manner the sealing lip (5) is only pressed radially against the container mouth during the course of the screwing-on process. In this way over-stretching and damage to the material of the sealing lip can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 4320844
Abstract: A container closure system such that an uninstructed person would find it difficult to remove the closure. Helical screw threads on the container and on the one-piece closure have detents and discrete thread portions engageable under the influence of a spring means once the closure has been screwed onto (cap) or into (stopper) the container to a certain extent. Unscrewing can only be effected by firstly overcoming the spring means to separate the locking detents/thread portions and subsequently turning the closure while continuing to overcome said spring means.

  • Patent number: 4307817
Abstract: The invention relates to a container and lid combination in which a flexible skirt is injection molded with either the container or lid to provide the combination with a seal. The skirt extends either radially inwardly from an inner container surface or radially outwardly from the underside of the lid, and is so shaped that as the lid is located about the container rim the skirt is deflected to a position in which it is biased because of the elasticity of the elastomeric material from which it is constructed to press against the inner container surface or underside of the lid in sealing engagment. In a preferred embodiment a circumferential bead is molded to one of the inner container surface and underside of the lid, and co-operates with the skirt to releasably secure the lid to the container.

  • Patent number: 4253581
Abstract: A container having an external screw thread is closed by a synthetic plastics stopper comprising an internally threaded cap with a seal part protruding from the cap top, this seal part having an outwardly protruding seal section which in use is bent back outwardly by the inner wall of the container neck. The screw thread on the container neck, the screw thread on the cap and the seal section are such in relation to one another that in applying the stopper the seal section contacts the container neck and is bent back thereby before the external screw thread on the container and the internal thread on the cap come into engagement with one another. The seal section preferably consists of permanently deformable material so that on unscrewing the stopper, the seal between the stopper and the container opening is broken before the threads come out of engagement.

  • Patent number: 4248356
Abstract: The invention provides a method of improving the gastightness of a seal formed between two components consisting of a closure cap applied to seal a container. An ultrasonically vibrating horn is applied to the closure cap to heat the sealing surfaces of the closure cap and container. As the cap and/or container are formed of thermoplastic material, the ultrasonic heating softens the sealing surface of one of the components and causes it to mould into close conformity with the complementary sealing surface of the other component with the effect that the gastightness of the seal between the two is improved. The application of ultrasonic heating energy is discontinued before any significant welding between the two components can occur.
