Patent number: 4413392Abstract: A catalytic converter having two spaced catalyst elements is positioned between a front muffler and a rear muffler. Chrome plating of the mufflers does not adversely affect performance of the catalyst elements because welding of the mufflers to opposite ends of the catalytic converter is accomplished after the chrome plating step. Masking of the joinder areas before plating avoids blow holes at the welds, and silver paint is later applied to the areas which were masked. The catalytic converter is constructed by simultaneously pushing the two catalyst elements and flanged sleeves into opposite ends of the catalyst casing, using tapered guide rings and flanged pusher bars to squeeze peripheral cushions into place within the catalyst casing and around each of the catalyst elements. Welding electrodes are employed in combination with the flanged pusher bars to spot weld the catalyst casing to the flanged sleeves.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1981Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Junji Otani, Yasuo Ikenoya, Kanau Iwashita

Patent number: 4352001Abstract: An improvement in a method for producing a welded metallic can body. The method involves holding and pressing a lap portion of the side marginal portions of a can body-like structure, which has been formed by bending a metal blank into a cylindrical shape, along its entire length between a pair of opposing parallel wire electrodes placed on the opposing surfaces of parallel electrodes, and passing an electric current across the parallel electrodes for a predetermined period of time during the pressing to subject the lap portion to resistance welding. At least one of the parallel electrodes is divided longitudinally into two or more portions electrically insulated from each other, and an electric current is passed through at least one of them independently from the other portions so that the temperature rise in the lap portion of the can body-like structure becomes uniform. Patent number: 4349397Abstract: Pipe components, i.e., pipes, adapting members and fittings made of weldable plastic, are interconnected by electrically weldable joints. The welding process is made possible by a welding sleeve 3 being connected to the output 4 of the device. A switch-on monitor 11 permits the switching on of a switch stage 7 of the welding current circuit. The thermal energy is determined by square-law simulation of the welding or mains voltage in a pulse generator 9, which produces a pulse frequency which is dependent on this value and whose pulses are summed in a counter 10. Once a count value that corresponds to the thermal energy has been reached, the switch stage 7 is switched off. If the count value is not reached a function monitor 5 gives a warning signal.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1978Date of Patent: September 14, 1982Inventor: Werner Sturm

Patent number: 4295568Abstract: For palletized handling of goods a pressure frame is made from springy frame members of L-shaped section, which are all similarly tilted for two reasons: firstly to enable identical pressure frames to nest safely in storage and secondly to accommodate stretching of straps which secure the palletized goods. Two opposite side members are bowed, upwardly concave and after placing the frame around the top of a stack of goods, holding straps are put around the stack and the frame. Tightening the straps causes the frame to distort slightly, reducing the tilt of the frame members, and the bowing of the two bowed members. Owing to their resilience, the frame members tend to recover the tilt and bowing and so keep the straps tensioned, and the stack secured, despite the straps stretching slightly.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1979Date of Patent: October 20, 1981Inventor: Kenneth S. Patent number: 4283615Abstract: An axial mandrel having good electrical conductivity is fitted with conical metal washers and insulating pastilles in alternate sequence. A nut applied against an insulating support at the lower end of the mandrel exerts a compressive stress on the washers, the peripheral edges of which are applied against a lining sleeve placed within a leaky portion of a heat-exchanger tube. Each washer thus exerts a radial force which applies the sleeve in intimate contact with the tube along a number of circular lines corresponding to the number of washers. An electric current is passed through the mandrel, the washers, the lining sleeve, thus uniting the tube and the lining sleeve by means of circular resistance welds.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1979Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: Commissariat a l'Energie AtomiqueInventor: Bernard Vrillon

Patent number: 4280040Abstract: A method for manufacturing a gas turbine combustion chamber that preserves cooling fluid holes therein. Passages are formed in one surface of each of two metal sheets. A plurality of cooling fluid holes are drilled through the passages to the other surface of each sheet. The two metal sheets are abutted face-to-face so that their respective passages form channels and the sheets are thereafter brazed together. The brazed sheets are bent to form an annular shaped chamber having a butt joint running along the length of the chamber. The butt joint is electric-arc welded along each side of the same, there being only partial penetration by each weld thereby avoiding the filling in of any of the cooling fluid holes, in the line of the weld, with melted material.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1979Date of Patent: July 21, 1981Assignee: Rolls-Royce LimitedInventor: John J.
