  • Patent number: 4485647
Abstract: A locking fuel cap has a handgripping shell that is selectively connected to a threaded closure through a lock mechanism and a torque limiting mechanism. The torque limiting mechanism is operable to limit torque in the closing direction. The lock mechanism has a key actuated latch member which is engageable with a drive finger to align the drive finger with cooperating drive surfaces on the torque limiting mechanism when the fuel cap is unlocked. The latch mechanism maintains the drive finger aligned when the key is operated to the lock position until the fuel cap is installed. The latch mechanism is released by the drive finger engaging the drive surface during such installation so that the drive finger can return to the unaligned position if removal of the fuel cap is attempted while the lock mechanism is in the locked position.

  • Patent number: 4484692
Abstract: A substantially rectangularly shaped metal housing includes a top wall, a rear wall, a pair of side walls and a bottom wall. The front edges of the side walls carry a pair of opposed, vertically extending channel members which are adapted to accommodate the side edges of a substantially rectangularly shaped front cover. A lock is mounted at the upper central portion of the cover which locks into a cooperating element on the inside top wall. The lock also interferes with the bottom wall when the cover is slid downwardly to allow the cover to be suspended by the housing. One of the upper corners of the cover is cut off so that the cover can be rotated and removed when in the suspended position. A strand bar extends between and is supported by a pair of opposed tapered indentations in the interior side walls.

  • Patent number: 4457325
Abstract: A fuel tank cap (10,130) having a venting valve (56,56A) adapted to relieve pressure and temperature in the tank and prevent spilling fuel from the tank. A cover plate (28,28A) is automatically (34,34A) removed from the cap by excessive temperature so as to allow fluid in the tank to escape. The valve body (56) has a spin chamber (98), having generally circular cross sections (102,104) and at least one tangentially directed side wall inlet opening (106). The chamber cross sections decrease in diameter upwardly of the inlet opening (88) to a point below a circular outlet opening whereby gas venting through the chamber spins a light weight buoyant ball (94) around the chamber so as to prevent the ball from closing during venting. The ball (94) is lifted onto a seat (92) at the outlet to close it when liquid enters the chamber to a predetermined level. A heavy ball (96) in the chamber holds the light ball (94) on the seat when the chamber has been tilted a predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 4305522
Abstract: A locking cover for a pipe connection having an inner member with a radial sealing flange detachably locked with an overlapping outer cap by means of a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism comprises engaging projections, extending radially inward from the wall of the cap, which in turn includes a guide surface directed inward as well as a connecting surface to engage the sealing flange. The connecting surface is bent in a convex or arcuate shape from the radial inner end of the guide surface to the wall of the cap. Thus, the sealing flange lies with its edge on the connecting surface. In this way the outer cap can spring loose when force of a given magnitude is exerted upon the inner member without breaking the locking mechanism.

A lock mounted on the cover member engages with a roller assembly provided in the housing to securely retain the cover member in its closed position. In a modified form, two locks can be mounted on the cover member for engagement with associated latching elements disposed on the housing.

Abstract: A commercial trash bin is provided with locking arrangements which restrict the use of the trash bin to the authorized user thereof, and still permit the dumping of the trash bins without wasting any extra time by the garbage truck operator. The lids are provided with a special latch which is disabled to permit dumping through gravity action when the trash bin is lifted and inverted and dumped. In one case the mechanism includes a heavy spring which is compressed by the weight of the trash bin, and in another case a gravity operated latch releasing mechanism is employed. In each case, to open the trash bin while it is in the upright orientation, a key-operated release, either in the form of a padlock or a built-in lock mechanism, is used.

  • Patent number: 4132091
Abstract: A fuel cap is provided for threaded engagement with a vehicle fuel tank inlet in which a locking mechanism employs a key to move a lug from a stable locking position to an unstable unlocking position. The key may be immediately removed and the fuel cap may be threadably disengaged from the inlet and thereafter reengaged therewith once fuel has been introduced into the tank. The key need not be employed to lock the fuel cap, since once manipulation of the fuel cap to threadably engage the cap with the fuel inlet is initiated, the lug is moved from the unstable unlocking position to a stable locking position. The cap may thereafter not be threadably disengaged from the fuel tank inlet unless a key is employed to again shift the lug to the unstable unlocking position. A clutch mechanism is employed to prevent overtightening of the cap and consequent damage to the cap or fuel tank inlet, yet allow sufficient tightening to effectuate a vapor tight seal between the cap and the inlet.
