Abstract: A metal lid for a tobacco can is provided. The metal lid includes a circular lid top having a central recess and a shoulder. The shoulder extends radially outwardly from and vertically above the central recess. The side wall is unitarily formed with the shoulder, depends downwardly from the shoulder, and is disposed below the central recess of the lid top. The side wall includes a bead and a hem. The bead extends circumferentially around the side wall. The hem is formed from a distal portion of the side wall folded over onto an intermediate portion of the side wall. The hem functions as a guide, forms a safety edge, and permits the lid to be more easily grasped by a consumer.

  • Publication number: 20090107999
Abstract: A container assembly includes a container having an unthreaded finish portion and a closure having a downwardly depending sidewall and blocking structure provided at a lower end of the sidewall for securing the closure on to the unthreaded finish portion. The sidewall is provided with a predetermined area of weakness so that in the event that an attempt is made to remove the closure from the container the predetermined area of weakness will rupture, leaving the closure with insufficient structural integrity to be successfully reapplied to the container. The container assembly has particular utility for use in packaging brand-name comestibles such as ketchup for restaurant use. It will frustrate efforts by the restaurant to replenish the brand-name comestible with a cheaper replacement within a dispensing container that is still labeled with the brand of the original product.

  • Patent number: 6817819
Abstract: The disclosed invention describes a container end that can be easily opened and does not rely on a conventional metal tab, riveted onto the end, thereby avoiding the problems and the cost associated with such a tab. The invention utilizes a traditional container end shell with a separate and distinct piece that is formed independently and is inserted into a countersink which is placed on the outer surface of the container end shell. The removal of this separate piece exerts a force or causes a change in the properties of the container wall in the countersink area, initiating and proliferating a discontinuity in the container wall, thereby creating an opening in the container. This change in the properties of the container wall can be mechanical, chemical, thermal or any other modality, which has the ability to influence the integrity of the container wall.

Abstract: The present invention provides a pail and cradle system and method for collectively containing one or more chemicals. The cradle comprises an interior surface having an opening with a circumferential rim for reception onto the lip of a pail. The cradle further comprises an extended return so that when the lugs of a lid are crimped onto the pail, the cradle return is clamped by the lugs against the sidewall of the pail. A gasket is mounted under the rim of the cradle so that a seal is formed between the cradle and the top lip of the pail. The lid for the pail further comprises a groove in which a gasket is mounted for sealing the lid against the rim of the cradle when the lid is crimped to the pail assembly.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a pile-up lid each having an upper wall (1) and an element (2) arranged around the perimeter of said upper wall (1) and which forms a lip (3) protruding above said upper wall (1), and skirt (4) extending below said upper wall. The lid is made by a process of bringing together in a synchronous manner external sector elements (9) and internal sector element (10) in radially opposite directions so that, owing to the forced approach of the contact surfaces of the external and internal sector elements (9, 10) with said upper lip (3) of said lid interposed between them, a reeding pressure-moulding is obtained on both the inner and the outer surfaces of said upper lip (3), giving said lip (3) an outline apt to allow piling up on other similar lids.
