  • Patent number: 6889865
Abstract: A storage tank includes a dome placed over an open end of a riser and secured to the riser by a fiberglass ring formed over a flanged end of the dome and a portion of the riser that is adjacent to the dome such that the interior of the tank may be pressurized to facilitate leak detection. A fillet of putty or other material that will not adhere or only weakly adhere to the riser and dome is placed over a horizontal surface of the flanged end. This arrangement allows the dome to be removed from the riser by simply grinding away a corner portion of the fiberglass ring at the bottom edge of the dome. The dome may then be reused for other tanks. In another embodiment, a domed cover is formed on an interior of the riser. The domed cover preferably includes a flat outside edge which is permanently attached to the inside wall of the riser. After the tank has been installed and tested, the domed portion is cut away, leaving the flat edge attached to the interior wall of the riser.

  • Patent number: 6840668
Abstract: The present invention relates to apparatus, systems, and methods for opening an autosampler sealed sample pan prior to TGA testing. The sealed sample pan comprises a pan, cover, and bail. A notch is formed in the seal sample pan cover. The cover can be opened by applying a concentrated force to the inside of the notch with a punch element integrated into the autosampler. This causes the center disk portion of the cover to be partially sheared and the sealed sample pan to be opened. It also prevents the punch element from touching the sample. A force sensor is used to determine if the cover has been opened. If the cover has been opened, then the sample pan is loaded to the TGA balance. If the cover has not been opened, the autosampler will not load the pan and will automatically move to the next sealed sample pan.

Abstract: A sealed container comprising a cup and lid and a method for sealing such a container is disclosed. The cup has a lip with a raised sealing bead along its length. During sealing, the raised sealing bead compresses, thereby stretching the adhesive layer on the lower portion of the lid out of the way and forming a direct welded seal with the heat-resistant layer of the lid. The adhesive to either side of the sealing bead forms an adhesive seal between the lid and the remaining portion of the lip. This type of double seal is particularly effective in forming a durable, consistent seal when product is present on the lip of the container. The welded seal is also well suited to situations when the cup may be warped or the sealing bead is otherwise caused to be higher along some portion of its length than along other portions.

  • Patent number: 6378718
Abstract: A beverage can. In order to obtain distribution in hygienic conditions of fluid contained in the can a protection element is provided, which has a first and a second laminar portion which are superimposed and connected in a manner which is hermetically sealed but which is separable by being pivoted around a hinge. An upper surface of the first laminar portion of the protection element becomes a sterile support surface for an upper lip, and the lower surface of the second laminar portion of the protection element becomes a sterile support surface for a lower lip.

  • Patent number: 6364097
Abstract: A pull-apart fragrance sampler is provided which may be produced in-line and without the use of pressure sensitive materials. The sampler includes a carrier defining a fold line, barrier applied to the carrier and centered with respect to the fold line such that the fold line divides the barrier into a first half and a second half, and a wet fragrance sample applied to one of the first and second halves of the barrier. The carrier and barrier are folded over upon themselves along the fold line and a seal is formed around the wet fragrance sample without the use of pressure sensitive materials to bind the two halves of the sampler together. The seal and barrier define a pocket which will substantially prevent the premature release of said fragrance from the sampler. The seal may be a heat seal, an adhesive seal, or a cohesive seal. The barrier may be an aqueous based curable coating, an organic based curable coating, or a film.

Abstract: This invention relates a closure with a directionally peelable opening feature for articles comprising first and second layer of different polymeric films, wherein each layer has an upper and lower surface, the upper surface of the first layer is peelably attached to the lower surface of the second layer at a separation interface, provided that when the closure is used to secure an article, at least one portion of the surface and of the upper surface of the first layer or the lower surface of the second layer is not attached to the container. The invention also relates to a container sealed with the directionally peelable closure. The closure provides a means for providing a strong sealing closure that is directionally peelable requiring little effort. In another aspect the invention provides a means for using a container more than once.

  • Patent number: 6325213
Abstract: A two part plastic container for food products is provided having a main body and a base for being attached to the bottom of the body. The body has a frustoconical sidewall with a radial bottom rim and the base has a shorter frustoconical sidewall with a radial bottom rim. The rims are advantageous in that they allow stacks of the container bodies and bases to be processed with container feeding equipment presently in use as the rims provide distinct structure for being fed by the mechanical devices of the equipment. An energy director area is provided between the rims for ultrasonically attaching the container body and base. The container body has a smooth sidewall over substantially its entire extent without indentations or bumps for maximizing the printing area thereon.

  • Patent number: 6302290
Abstract: The sealing structure (S) for a container (C) provided with an opening (O) comprises a sheet (F) welded around the edge of the opening, this sheet (F) consisting of at least three layers, namely a welding layer (1) pressed against and welded as a bead (4) to the edge of the opening, a barrier-forming exterior layer (2) and an intermediate adhesive layer (3); the weld between the bead (4) of the welding layer (1) and the edge of the opening has a tear strength greater than the strength of adhesion between the welding layer (1) and the adhesive layer (3) so that, at the first occasion of exposing the opening (O), the welded bead (4) remains in place around the edge of the opening and separates from the rest of the welding layer (1) and from the adhesive layer (3), which adhesive layer is thus uncovered over an area (7) and makes it possible, by pressing again against the bead (4), to seal the container (C) again.

  • Patent number: 6302324
Abstract: A system for packaging of perishable food products involves initially packaging the food product in a receptacle containing an inert gas atmosphere and sealing a film to the receptacle. The inert gas atmosphere prevents deterioration of the food product subsequent to shipment from a central processing facility. The receptacle includes a sealing flange and a tab portion extending from the sealing flange, to which the film is sealed. To prepare the food product for display at a retail establishment, the tab and the film sealed thereto are removed from the package, to form an opening between the film and the receptacle. An atmosphere exchange operation is carried out through the opening, by inserting a nozzle through the opening and introducing an oxygen-containing gas into the receptacle cavity through the opening. The inert gas atmosphere initially contained within the receptacle is exhausted through the opening.

Abstract: Lids (10) of a substrate material (5) having a plastic film, featuring printing (6) on the outside, with respect to a container (1) on which the lid (10) is employed, and an inward facing sealing layer (8,9), for closing the container (1) which has a shoulder region (4). The inward facing side of the substrate material (5) features the sealing layer (8,9) in the form of a printed image, and the printed image corresponds with the shoulder region (4) of the container (1) and is in the form of a series of points (12). The printed image (12) which forms the sealing layer (8,9) and the printed pattern (12) may be deposited in the same printing machine in which the printing (6) on the substrate layer takes place. The printed image (11) enables easy removal of the lids (10) individually from a stack of lids in the packaging machine without having to depend on embossing of the lids.

Abstract: A paint can rim seal and groove protector that is simple and inexpensive in its manufacture and construction and easily allows the pouring of paint or other liquid from a can. A seal for a can rim includes a deformable rim seal having a width defined by an interior diameter smaller than the can rim and an exterior diameter larger than the can rim. A pressure sensitive releasable adhesive coating is provided on one surface of the deformable rim seal. In operation, the rim seal is aligned with the can rim with the adhesive coated side down. The rim seal is then removably placed on the rim. Interior and exterior edges of the rim seal are manually bent down to adhesively seal against the interior and exterior sidewalls of the can.
