Multilayer Patents (Class 220/359.3)
  • Patent number: 6308853
Abstract: Lids (10) of a substrate material (5) having a plastic film, featuring printing (6) on the outside, with respect to a container (1) on which the lid (10) is employed, and an inward facing sealing layer (8,9), for closing the container (1) which has a shoulder region (4). The inward facing side of the substrate material (5) features the sealing layer (8,9) in the form of a printed image, and the printed image corresponds with the shoulder region (4) of the container (1) and is in the form of a series of points (12). The printed image (12) which forms the sealing layer (8,9) and the printed pattern (12) may be deposited in the same printing machine in which the printing (6) on the substrate layer takes place. The printed image (11) enables easy removal of the lids (10) individually from a stack of lids in the packaging machine without having to depend on embossing of the lids.

  • Patent number: 6302321
Abstract: A sealed composite container for products is provided having a paperboard body ply with a liner ply adhered on the inner surface thereof. One end of the container is rolled outwardly to form a rim and exposing the inner surface of the liner ply. A lid is heat sealed to the rim of the container. The dual-layer sealant composition layer of the lid comprises a base layer, such as high density polyethylene, and an adjacent frangible layer, such as ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymer, the frangible layer being operatively positioned for heat sealing to the rim of the container.

  • Patent number: 6302290
Abstract: The sealing structure (S) for a container (C) provided with an opening (O) comprises a sheet (F) welded around the edge of the opening, this sheet (F) consisting of at least three layers, namely a welding layer (1) pressed against and welded as a bead (4) to the edge of the opening, a barrier-forming exterior layer (2) and an intermediate adhesive layer (3); the weld between the bead (4) of the welding layer (1) and the edge of the opening has a tear strength greater than the strength of adhesion between the welding layer (1) and the adhesive layer (3) so that, at the first occasion of exposing the opening (O), the welded bead (4) remains in place around the edge of the opening and separates from the rest of the welding layer (1) and from the adhesive layer (3), which adhesive layer is thus uncovered over an area (7) and makes it possible, by pressing again against the bead (4), to seal the container (C) again.

  • Publication number: 20010023870
Abstract: A package is provided with a lid and container that are heat sealed together. A multi-ply sheet material is provided for being thermoformed to define the container which has a tapering wall and bulge-resistant bottom end. Prior to thermoforming the container from the sheet, the sheet is heated with oval pads on a plurality of plates which are arranged in a configuration to facilitate control of the sheet temperature. A plug is used in the thermoforming process to contact the sheet and position the sheet within a die. A lid sheet is heat sealed to the container sheet over the thermoformed containers so as to produce a pair of spaced-apart, annular bead heat seals. The package is completed by severing the sealed-together sheets at the periphery of the container with a punch and die set that produces and clean, smooth cut surface.

  • Patent number: 6279789
Abstract: A container and closure package that includes a container having a body with a finish surrounding a fill/dispensing opening, and a thread on the finish for removably securing a closure. A closure has a peripheral skirt with a thread for removably securing the closure to the container finish, and a base wall with a fill opening aligned with the fill/dispensing opening in the container when the closure is secured to the container. A cap is secured to the closure base wall closing the fill opening. In accordance with the preferred method for filling the package, the container and closure are provided to the packager as an assembled unit. The container is filled with product through the fill opening in the closure and the fill/dispensing opening in the container. The cap is then secured to the closure base wall over the fill opening to close and seal the package.

  • Patent number: 6253951
Abstract: A paint can rim seal and groove protector that is simple and inexpensive in its manufacture and construction and easily allows the pouring of paint or other liquid from a can. A seal for a can rim includes a deformable rim seal having a width defined by an interior diameter smaller than the can rim and an exterior diameter larger than the can rim. A pressure sensitive releasable adhesive coating is provided on one surface of the deformable rim seal. In operation, the rim seal is aligned with the can rim with the adhesive coated side down. The rim seal is then removably placed on the rim. Interior and exterior edges of the rim seal are manually bent down to adhesively seal against the interior and exterior sidewalls of the can.

  • Patent number: 6196450
Abstract: An easy-open composite container has a membrane-type closure and includes a laminated tubular body member of composite materials having a predetermined laminated strength. The body member includes a bodywall portion and a liner portion positioned inside the bodywall portion and forming an inside surface of the body member. An outwardly-rolled rim portion is formed at the upper area of an open upper end of the tubular body member and the liner portion forms a top surface of the body member open upper end and an outside surface of the outwardly rolled rim portion. A cut extends circumferentially around a segment of the outside surface of the rim portion and extends radially-inwardly through at least a part of the liner portion. A membrane closure covers the open upper end of the body member and has an outwardly extending tab portion positioned over the cut in the rim portion of the body member.

  • Patent number: 6182850
Abstract: Closure membrane for containers having an outer film and inner film with a joining layer and a sealing seam zone between these two films. At least one space free of a bonding layer is provided within the sealing seam zone between the outer film and the inner film and, within the limits of this non-bonded space, the outer film and the inner film each feature at least one opening, and a reservoir of material that softens under the influence of heat is provided in the non-bonded space between the outer film and the inner film. The openings in the inner film and the openings in the outer film are connected to enable the passage of a fluid such as a gas from the interior of the container to the surrounding atmosphere. On application of heat to the closure membrane e.g. during a sterilization process, the openings in the inner film and the outer film are closed off as a result of softening of the material that softens under the influence of heat.
