Including Heat Sealed Retaining Means Patents (Class 220/359.4)
  • Publication number: 20110095030
Abstract: A container assembly includes a container body having a side wall encircling an axis, and a metal end for attachment to an upper edge of the side wall via heat-sealing. The outer peripheral region is shaped prior to application to the container body such that an annular channel is defined between an inner chuck wall and an outer chuck wall of the metal end. The metal end is pushed straight onto the side wall such that the upper edge of the side wall is received into the channel. The surfaces of the side wall and the opposing surfaces of the chuck walls have heat-sealable material thereon. The metal end is heated to melt and fuse the heat-sealable layers, thereby sealing the metal end onto the side wall. The metal end is shaped such that the free edge of the outer chuck wall is not exposed.

Abstract: An element which is punched out in a cover shape for sealing of containers, includes two plies with at least one opening aid which is integrated within these plies, the ply (3) located in the direction of the container having a plastic layer which is provided with perforations or scoring. The layers of the sealing element are cemented by a peelable adhesive layer, the opening aid and the ply which has the plastic layer being free of adhesive in the area of its perforations or scoring. The sealing element enables not only facilitated sealing of food containers, such as microwave containers, since mutual displacement or slippage of the individual plies due to the adhesive layer is prevented, but that any type of penetration of adhesive into the food container, thus into the food, is prevented in any case by the peelability of the adhesive.

The primer provides a high z-direction bond strength but is designed to fail in a shear tearing mode when peeling the membrane from the bead, such that the heat seal material on the bead is detached from the bead and remains attached to the membrane. The flange has a sealing surface adjacent the opening and a beveled surface spaced outwardly of the sealing surface. The beveled surface extends along a periphery of the flange. The sealing surface has an inner radius R1 and an outer radius R2, the outer radius R2 defining the juncture between the sealing surface and the beveled surface. The beveled surface extends at a predetermined angle with respect to the sealing surface. The lid includes a tab extending outward of the periphery of the flange. The lid is affixed to the sealing surface thereby sealing the opening of the cup. The lid is not affixed to a substantial portion of the beveled surface. The lid and the sealing surface are adapted to release upon exertion of a predetermined pulling force on the tab.

  • Patent number: 6471083
Abstract: A closure for sealing an opening of a tubular container is disclosed, the closure having a paperboard central panel with a plurality of secondary panels extending angularly therefrom forming a surface around the perimeter of the central panel. A plastic skirt is adhered around the perimeter of the central panel and to one side of the secondary panels opposite the surface to reinforce it. A metal foil layer is adhered to the surface, the foil having a side facing the sidewall of the container with a heat-activated adhesive layer thereon. The closure is positioned on the container with the central panel in registration with the opening and the heat-activated adhesive layer engaging the sidewall of the container. The seal between the closure and the container is effected by subjecting the container to an electromagnetic induction field, whereby eddy currents induced in the metal foil by the field cause the heat-activated adhesive to form a bond between the container sidewall and the secondary panels.

Abstract: A method for sealing a container comprising a cup and lid is disclosed. The cup has a lip with a raised sealing bead along its length. During sealing, the raised sealing bead compresses, thereby stretching the adhesive layer on the lower portion of the lid out of the way and forming a direct welded seal with the heat-resistant layer of the lid. The adhesive to either side of the sealing bead forms an adhesive seal between the lid and the remaining portion of the lip. This type of double seal is particularly effective in forming a durable, consistent seal when product is present on the lip of the container. The welded seal is also well suited to situations when the cup may be warped or the sealing bead is otherwise caused to be higher along some portion of its length than along other portions.

Abstract: Glass bottles having undergone high-frequency heat sealing, to depress the dispersion of sealing strength as low as possible and to improve the ease of both sealing and unsealing. A rough surface having minute unevenness is formed in the proximity of the apical part of the mouth of a glass bottle, wherein the apical part contacts with a sealing material. Since (1) a contact area between the sealing material and the glass surface decreases, and the quantity of heat taken by the glass from the sealing material decreases, (2) a bond area increases; and (3) an anchor effect is generated, the sealing strength increases, and simultaneously the dispersion of the sealing strength decreases.

Abstract: This invention relates a closure with a directionally peelable opening feature for articles comprising first and second layer of different polymeric films, wherein each layer has an upper and lower surface, the upper surface of the first layer is peelably attached to the lower surface of the second layer at a separation interface, provided that when the closure is used to secure an article, at least one portion of the surface and of the upper surface of the first layer or the lower surface of the second layer is not attached to the container. The invention also relates to a container sealed with the directionally peelable closure. The closure provides a means for providing a strong sealing closure that is directionally peelable requiring little effort.
