Abstract: A design roller sleeve has a plurality of absorbent strips that wrap about the axis of a paint roller in a helical fashion. Each of the strips has an array of flaps, in which large and small flaps are preferably alternated, extending outward from a backing portion of the strip. This roller is intended to be used for applying a visually random pattern to a uniformly colored and relatively wide horizontal surface such as a concrete driveway or patio When used for this purpose the design roller sleeve is loaded with paint and then spun within a spatter-box to remove excess paint before rolling a partly colored swath on the surface. Formed longitudinally inside the tray is an inclined bottom surface designed to return excess paint to the basin when the paint tray is disposed horizontally. Formed on the inclined surfaces is a plurality of parallel raised contact surfaces that provides a directional contact surface used to remove excess paint from the roller and return the excess paint to the basin. The length of the inclined surface is sufficient to create freeboard for use in the vertical position without risk of spillage. The paint tray is equipped with a pair of legs attached to its distal end that allows the paint tray to rest vertically on the rung(s) of a ladder or step(s) of a stepladder, as well as horizontally on the ladder shelf as in traditional paint trays. Aligned longitudinally on the distal end of the paint tray ray is a rigid handle for easy transport of the paint tray in the vertical position.

  • Patent number: 5511279
Abstract: A paint roller pan includes a relatively deep distal paint reservoir and a relatively shallow inclined roller ramp. The proximal end of the roller ramp is provided with a downward extending flared support with distally extending feet for engaging a step ladder. The reservoir and the ramp are separated by a dam having a central notch through which paint drains from the ramp into the reservoir. An inner side wall of the pan is provided with a vertical V-shaped notch on the proximal side of the dam for engaging the arm of a paint roller with an extended handle and holding it in a vertically fixed position. Two outer side walls of the pan have notched handle receiving slots. A handle with hooked ends engages the notched slots and is movable to engage appropriate notches so that the pan is balanced when lifted with one hand regardless of how much paint it is holding.

  • Patent number: 5489051
Abstract: A gravity responsive apparatus for the carriage of paint and paint application related tools suspended upon the hip of a painter which consists of a hip-supported, belt-attached base member which is flexibly attached by means of a separable ball and socket joint to a freely swinging sealable paint container and fitted tool carrier. Use of the device allows a painter to easily and safely scale ladders and scaffolds without danger of paint spillage and upon arrival at the place of application of paint to simply flip open and fold back the hinged, gasketed cover for access to the paint supply. A variety of painters preparation and application tools may be carried in the integral tool rack which is a part of the apparatus. The freely swinging construction allows the painter to assume almost any position without the probability of paint spillage or tool droppage and being fabricated of a smooth, seamless material, is readily cleanable and requires little care or maintenance.
