The lid is pivotable about an axis through a hinge joining the lid to the container body to open and close the container. The resilient tab has a proximal portion fixed to the lid, a distal portion projecting from the lid, and at least one abutment on the distal portion. The abutment on the distal portion of the tab is normally biased into engagement with an abutment on the container body when the lid is in its closed position. The distal portion of the tab is displaceable against the bias to disengage the abutment of the tab from the abutment of the container. Displacement of the tab releases the lid so that it can be pivoted about the hinge to open the container.

The first linkage arm includes first, second and third joints that pivotably connect respectively to the vertical member, to the container, and to the door. The second linkage arm includes fourth and fifth joints that pivotably connect respectively to the door and to the container. The linkage arms are disposed to avoid lateral obstruction beyond the door in the open position.

Therefore, the arm and pivotably-supporting shaft hardly deform because no excessive load acts onto them.

    Abstract: The present invention is a convenient-to-use cosmetic compact of increased stability, comprising a base, a cosmetic article carrier disposed within the base and a cap. With respect to the base, the cap is sometimes capable of translational movement and sometimes capable of rotational movement, but the cap can only perform one type of motion at a time. The type of movement that the cap may execute, depends on the relative orientation of the cap and base. There is one exception to this rule. There is exactly one orientation of the cap with respect to the base from which the user may execute either translation or rotation, but not both simultaneously. Translation of the cap with respect to the base causes translation of the cosmetic article carrier, either toward the bottom or toward the top of the base. In contrast, rotation of the cap with respect to the base does not affect the position of the cosmetic article carrier. Preferably, the cap is capable of rotating at least 180°.
