  • Patent number: 5507324
Abstract: A fuel filling assembly for liquid fuel tanks, especially on boats or the like, includes a fill tube adapted for mounting through a deck and a closure cap preferably hinged over the fill tube opening for selective opening and closing. Preferably, a positioning member allows the closure cap to be mounted in various positions with respect to the fill tube to accommodate various mounting locations on a boat. The fill tube may be angled or straight to further accommodate varied mounting positions. In one version, a separate vent tube joins the fill tube to provide continuous fuel tank venting, pressure equalization and return of fuel overflow to the fuel tank in case of tank overfill. In the vented version, a rigid shield on the closure cap extends over the opening to a vent passageway through the cap to restrict the escape of liquid fuel in the event of fuel surge due to extreme boat movements or the like when the closure cap is closed.

Abstract: The closure includes a base adapted to be screwed into a fuel tank filler pipe and having a fill opening normally closed by a hinged flapper which is opened when a fuel nozzle is inserted into the fill opening. The base is shielded against being manually gripped and unscrewed from the filler pipe by a cover also having a fill opening and normally supported for free rotation on the base so that turning of the cover normally is ineffective to unscrew the base. When a key is inserted into the cover, it couples the cover and the base for rotation as a unit and thereby enables the base to be unscrewed from the filler pipe. The same key also is used to actuate a locking device for locking the flapper in its closed position.

Abstract: A fuel cap is provided to improve sealing characteristics of a pressurized fuel tank. When the inner pressure P of a fuel tank is a negative pressure less than a predetermined regulation negative pressure Pr which does not need to be controlled, a valve 160 is pressed upward by the urging force of a spring 164 to bring a lip portion 161 of the valve 160 into contact with a seal surface 156 of a seal body 150 to thereby close the valve 160. As a result, the fuel tank is sealed from the outside air. At this time, a flat plate portion 155 of the rubber-made seal body 150 is bent by the urging force of the spring 164 so that the gap L between the flat plate portion 155 and the lower surface of a ceiling plate portion 131 is narrowed. In addition, the divergence of center of the valve 160 with respect to the seal body 50 is limited by ribs 162 of the valve 160 located in a valve slide hole 135.

This allows the user to attach the cap back out of his way while filling his gas inlet by merely pulling the cap back with the elastic body covering it and sticking out of his way conveniently and easily. Various sizes and shapes of car gas caps can be allowed for by the elastic nature of the device, however to give the best fit it is contemplated that several sizes will be available.

  • Patent number: 5110003
Abstract: A torque-override cap is provided for use in a filler neck of a tank. The cap includes a housing configured to engage the filler neck, a shell for providing a hand grip, and a ratchet wheel and a biasing mechanism disposed between the shell and the housing for providing a driving connection between the shell and the housing. The shell includes a plurality of drive teeth, while the ratchet wheel includes a plurality of driven teeth configured to engage the drive teeth to provide a torque-limited connection in the cap-advancing direction and a positive connection in the cap-removal direction. The biasing mechanism operates to yieldably bias the driven teeth of the ratchet wheel into engagement with the drive teeth of the shell to establish the torque-limited and positive connections.

  • Patent number: 5108001
Abstract: A pressure relief and venting closure cap for a filler neck of a vehicle gas or coolant system tank having an initial rotary drive which opens a vent valve in response to a differential movement between a cap shell and a vent valve actuator to vent the filler neck and wherein continued rotation of the cap shell causes disconnection of the cap shell and the filler neck. There are two separate drives from the cap shell, one to operate the vent valve and one to rotate a sealing element which screwingly connects the cap to the filler neck. A lost motion connection is provided for the drive to the sealing element so that disconnection can only take place after venting. A torque over-ride is provided for the closure to limit its rotary closing screwing movement after the vent valve is closed. A second drive between the lost motion connection and the vent valve is provided to stop differential rotation between the cap shell and the vent valve actuator when the closure member is rotated.

  • Patent number: 5090459
Abstract: A fuel tank system has a fuel tank, a fuel charging port extending from the fuel tank and disposed in the vicinity of an outer panel of a body and a fuel lid for covering the fuel charging port. The fuel lid is mounted such that it is movable substantially horizontally relative to a portion of the outer panel of the body corresponding to the fuel charging port and that a distal end of the fuel lid is capable of moving away from the fuel charging port and the outer panel. A fuel passage having an outlet disposed on a rear surface side of said fuel lid in such a manner as to be oriented downwardly is disposed in such a manner as to extend from said fuel tank. This fuel passage allows a liquid fuel overflowing during overfueling to flow.

  • Patent number: 5072986
Abstract: A remotely controlled gas cap assembly includes a strip mounted around a fuel inlet of a fuel tank. The strip extends around the fuel inlet and has two spaced end plates which face each other. A transverse pivot pin is pivotally mounted on the two end plates. A link protruding from the pivot pin is attached to a bar having two sides each formed with an annular groove. The control assembly further has a remotely controllable pneumatic cylinder with a piston rod. The piston rod has a distal forked end which is comprised of two opposite branch rods. A roller is provided on an inner side of each branch rod which is received in a corresponding annular groove in each side of the bar and is movable along the annular groove. A gas cap is integrally formed with the link. A rubber block protrudes from an inner side of the gas cap. The gas cap is lifted to expose the fuel inlet when the piston rod is in a first position. The rubber block of the gas cap seals the fuel inlet when the piston rod is in a second position.

Abstract: A closure cap for an automotive fuel tank displays informational indicia on one or more flags which are caused to project from the periphery of the cap when the cap is twisted for removal from the tank filler tube. The cap is constructed with two coaxially mounted plate members which are rotatably moveable relative each other by the act of twisting the cap off or on the filler cap. The relative movement of the two plates is utilized to propel the flags back and forth between one position in which the flags are disposed substantially entirely within the periphery of the cap and another position in which the flags extend substantially beyond the periphery of the cap.

Abstract: A vented fuel tank cap and valve assembly is described having a cam actuated connector for connecting the cap to the top of the filler neck tube for the tank. Three vent passages are employed in the cap with common outlet openings. One passage is normally open but includes a float valve which can close such passage when the vehicle tips. A second passage includes a pressure relief valve which opens when the tank pressure exceeds a predetermined pressure. The bias spring for the pressure relief valve also functions as the bias for the cam actuated connector. • Patent number: 5027868
Abstract: A fill tube (12) leading into a fuel tank (10) is provided with a normally closed closure door (20) and a fill nozzle seal (24, 26, 30) spaced outwardly of the closure door (20). When liquid fuel is to be added to the fuel tank (10) a fill nozzle (32) is inserted through the fill nozzle seal (24, 26, 30). A seal element (30) engages the outside diameter of the fill nozzle (32) and seals against vapor leakage between the seal element (30) and the fill nozzle (32). Further insertion of the fill nozzle (32) into the fill tube (12) moves the end of the fill nozzle (32) against the closure door (20) opening the closure door (20). When this happens, fuel vapor within the fuel tank (10) flows through an opening (18) that is normally closed by the closure door (20), to and through an outlet (36) leading from a chamber (34) that is between the fill nozzle seal (24, 26, 30) and the closure door (20).
