Patent number: 6019180Abstract: A procedure is described for determining the power output of a downhole drilling motor, when the motor is inside the wellbore. The technique uses stand-pipe pressure and fluid flow rate as the main inputs. The power output of the motor is calculated by carrying out two low flow stall tests at flow rates lower than the drilling flow rate. These tests result in "off-bottom" and stall pressures at the two flow rates. Another off-bottom pressure is taken at the actual flow rate that will be used during drilling operations. From the use of the off-bottom and stall pressure measurements, a determination is made of the differential pressure across the motor and the stall pressure at the actual drilling fluid flow rate. A full power curve and a predicted operating stand-pipe pressure for optimal power generation are provided based on an experimentally verified assumption regarding the change in rotation rate of the motor versus the differential pressure across the motor power section.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1998Date of Patent: February 1, 2000Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Demosthenis Pafitis, Vernon Koval

Patent number: 5882691Abstract: An automatic dry wall applicator having an applicator head connected to a translucent body with a quick release mechanism for easy cleaning and a gas spring dispensing system which moves a piston head in the body to dispense dry wall compound. A loading mechanism uses a manual pump which generates sufficient force to overcome the gas spring pressure to force dry wall compound from a reservoir into the head and body to retract the piston head during loading. The piston rod engages a cam brake which frees the rod during loading and locks the piston head from dispensing unless the cam is manually released from the rod. In one form of the invention, an on-off valve closes the applicator head during loading and can be opened to permit dispensing of dry wall compound.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Inventor: John S. Patent number: 5779105Abstract: An automatic air operated grease gun comprising a reciprocating grease plunger for ejecting grease, and a piston, connected to the plunger, for operating the plunger. The piston is slidably mounted in a cylinder to move between a retracted position and an advanced position. A return spring resiliently biases the piston to its retracted position. A switch selectively connects the cylinder to a source of gas under pressure to advance the piston against the return spring. The piston has a plurality of apertures therein, each aperture having an individual seal, and a release for opening the individual seals to relieve the pressure behind the cylinder and allow it to retract under the force of the return spring.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1997Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: McNeil (Ohio) CorporationInventors: C. Patent number: 5685462Abstract: An improved drive system for an extruding apparatus. A piston is mounted for reciprocal movement within a cylinder and moves between a power stroke wherein fluid is extruded from the cylinder and a return stroke wherein fluid is allowed to enter the cylinder. The piston is moved by a throw mounted to a crank. The plane of the axis of the crank is offset from the plane of movement of the piston within the cylinder. The plane of movement of the throw axis is parallel to the plane of movement of the piston during at least a portion of the power stroke of the piston. The throw is circular and the force exerted on the pistons by the throw during the portion of the power stroke is parallel to both planes of movement of the pistons thereby to avoid any sidewise and unequal loading on either one of the pistons.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1996Date of Patent: November 11, 1997Assignee: Power B International Inc.Inventor: Hubert M. Patent number: 5494193Abstract: A postmix juice dispensing system for dispensing a finished beverage directly from a pliable beverage concentrate having an ice point at or near freezer temperatures, with little or no conditioning. The system preferably uses a one-piece, unitary, disposable package that includes both the concentrate container and a positive displacement metering pump. The disposable package is placed in the dispenser which automatically connects the pump to a pump motor. A mixing nozzle is connected to the metering pump and a water line is connected to the mixing nozzle. Upon pushing a load button, the dispenser automatically feeds compressed air on top of a piston in the concentrate container to force concentrate into the pump. The dispenser automatically reads an indicator on the package to set the pump speed in response to the type of concentrate in the package. The dispenser requires no cleanup or sanitization and allows rapid flavor change.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1994Date of Patent: February 27, 1996Assignee: The Coca-Cola CompanyInventors: Jonathan Kirschner, Simon J. Patent number: 5474214Abstract: An air grease gun includes a grip, a barrel, a spout pipe unit and a grease storage tube. A generally Y-shaped air passage is formed in the grip and is bifurcated into a first branch and a second branch at the lower end portion of the grip. A compressed air source is communicated with the first branch. The second branch is communicated with the lower air chamber of the grease storage tube via an air tube. A valve normally closes the upper section of the air passage, which is above the first and second branches. The compressed air flowing from the compressed air source enters the grease storage tube via the first and second branches and via the air tube so as to push a tube piston upward, thereby impelling the grease in the grease storage tube into the barrel. Upon actuation of a trigger, the valve opens the air passage so that the compressed air flows into the barrel through the upper section of the air passage, thereby pneumatically moving the grease in the barrel to the spout outlet of the gun.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1994Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Assignee: King Cho Machinery Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Cheng-Hsin Chung, Shuun-Fan Yang

Patent number: 5337930Abstract: A mechanism for supplying a dilute fertilizer solution to a multiple number of growing plants includes an apparatus for adding fertilizer concentrate to a stream of flowing water, such that a relatively constant ratio of fertilizer to water is achieved. Pressurized water is diverted from a water passage into a container to achieve a fertilizer pumping action. A bag-like membrane in the container forms a pressurized water space that is in pressure contact with a separate fertilizer-containment space. Fertilizer concentrate in contact with the membrane is thus pumpd out of the container and into a stream of water flowing through the water passage. A constriction is provided in the water passage to achieve a pressure drop that produces the desired pumping action.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1992Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Inventors: Jim Fah, Mike Lee

Patent number: 4257540Abstract: A hand-held, battery-powered dispenser for pumpable materials such as lubricants and, in particular, lubricating grease, comprising a handle, a head, a barrel secured to the head holding a supply of lubricant and a plunger slideable within a bore in the head. The bore intersects an inlet port in communication with the barrel and is in communication with an outlet port for the delivery of the lubricant under pressure. The plunger is reciprocated in the bore through a pressure stroke and a return stroke by a motor in the handle operating a drive mechanism in the head connected to the plunger. The user operates the motor by actuating a switch in the handle which completes a circuit connecting rechargeable batteries in the handle with the motor. A flywheel in the drive mechanism permits significant reductions in the size and weight of the motor and batteries so that the dispenser can be light enough and small enough to be hand-held during operation, yet capable of delivering the lubricant under high pressure.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1978Date of Patent: March 24, 1981Assignee: McNeil CorporationInventors: Jerome B.
