Abstract: A method and apparatus for sterilizing and destroying a syringe needle includes a rotating needle carriage that receives a needle in a loading position. The needle carriage includes a port sized to accept a pen-type hypodermic syringe and an insert to downsize the port for accepting a conventional hypodermic syringe. The needle carriage is rotated downwardly to a cut-off position. At the cut-off position, two opposing contact blades pinch the needle, which electrically connects the positive and negative terminals of a battery. Current flows through the contact blades to shear the needle. The sheared portion of the needle then falls into a waste compartment in the bottom of the apparatus. When the syringe is removed from the needle carriage, the needle carriage rotates upwardly and returns to the loading position.

Abstract: An optical fiber cutter for cutting an optical fiber wire according to the principle of the stress-rupture includes a tension applying mechanism and a movable blade. The tension applying mechanism applies tension to the optical fiber wire in an axial direction thereof. The movable blade is contactable with the optical fiber wire in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction so as to impart an initial crack to the optical fiber wire to which the tension is applied. The movable blade contacts the optical fiber wire in only one direction, which is perpendicular to the axial direction.

  • Patent number: 6098862
Abstract: An incrementally continuous cleaving system allows for sequential flow of "material-to-be-cleaved" through a cleaving apparatus. In particular, a continuous feed tape membrane is used to support sequentially loaded optical bars (or, perhaps, wafers) that are then transported into a cleaving apparatus. The tape is advanced in small increments so that individual cleaving operations are performed at each scribe mark location on the top surface of the optical material. A vacuum pen (assisted by a detach pin) is then used to remove the cleaved section from the cleaving system. A conventional pick-and-place device may be used in the first instance to continuously load the bars (or wafers) onto the tape membrane.

  • Patent number: 5765727
Abstract: A tire separation method employs a cutting head and a press for separating treads from rims of solid rubber tires. The cutting head has an annular blade with a blunt edge for tearing the rubber from the rim of the tire. Three spoke blades are spaced apart around the annular blade for cutting the diameter of the tread into sections. The rim drops through the annular blade to a conveyor, while the tread sections fall away to tread conveyors. The tires are brought from storage on a tire conveyor. The press has a hydraulic cylinder driving a piston with a jaw-type clamping mechanism for picking up tires. The cylinder is on a carriage that is movable from over the cutting head to over the tire conveyor for picking up tires to bring them over the cutting head for separating.

  • Patent number: 4785696
Abstract: A method and apparatus for presenting a serial succession of cut sheet portions to a work station. The sheet portions are cut from a continuous webbing which is processed by a cutting station and a web-breaking station. The cutting station partially severs the web downstream of its leading free end so as to define a first sheet portion between that free end and the point of cutting, with the first sheet portion connected to the web by one or more tab connectors. The webbing is then advanced downstream to the tab-breaking station where the tabs are broken to free the first sheet portion for independent movement further downstream. A vacuum belt engages the webbing, and particularly the downstream edge adjacent the partial severing, with a vacuum belt. The vacuum belt engages the webbing by bridging the partially-severed cut portion, so as not to interfere with the downstream tab-breaking apparatus.
