Abstract: A web feeding, cutting and dispensing machine includes a pneumatic cylinder for moving a hot wire to cut measured-length sheets from web stock. A pneumatic clamp cylinder moves a clamp bar for momentarily clamping the web during cutting. Upon pressing a start button, a pneumatic control valve sequentially operates the respective cutting and clamping cylinders for quickly retracting the hot wire, while more slowly retracting the clamp. Conversely, after the next measured web length has advanced, this control valve again sequentially operates these two cylinders in reverse order for quickly clamping while slower cutting. This dual control by one valve is advantageously achieved (1) by throttling air flow in retracting the clamp cylinder relative to retracting the cut cylinder, and conversely (2) by throttling air flow in advancing the cut cylinder relative to advancing the clamp cylinder.

After each indexing step, the shutter is moved away from the pick-up area in order to provide access to the component in the opened pocket.

Abstract: A wire rope salvaging apparatus provides a frame which supports an intermittent feed mechanism which moves wire rope to be cut a small length at a time as defined by the stroke of the feed mechanism. A blade also mounted on the frame cuts the wire rope at preselected interval lengths, the blade being movable between cutting and feeding positions. A timing mechanism coordinates movement of the feed and blade mechanism so that the blade first assumes a non-cutting position during the feeding when the wire is moving and then cuts the rope when the feed has stopped and the wire rope is at a still position.

Abstract: Disclosed is a mechanism, associated with a thermoplastic bag making machine, for preparing a strip of thermoplastic to produce bags having the upper edges of the bag mouth formed in a sinusodial shape such that the peak of such shape is substantially equi-distant relative to the side edges of the bag. While the disclosed bag machine is of the type that advances the web strip incrementally, shaping of the web strip in the sinusodial shape occurs while a portion of the web strip is advanced at substantially constant velocity. A mechanism is provided for maintaining constant tension in the web despite the constant and intermittent feeding of the web.

  • Patent number: 4694982
Abstract: A pneumatic feeder is disclosed having twin feed slides axially reciprocable in side by side relation along parallel axes for intermittently advancing strip stock to a downstream machine for further processing. Each feed slide has clamps which serve to advance the stock with the traveling slide clamps activated and the clamps of the other slide being deactivated during its idle return movement. Each feed slide additionally has a rotatable crank mechanism and a single acting power cylinder associated therewith for providing a primary motive force in a stock advancing direction in cooperation with the associated crank mechanism. The crank mechanism serves both to trigger actuation of the driving force of the power cylinder to advance its feed slide and additionally provide harmonic deceleration of its feed slide under high rates of feed to ensure precision termination of the advancing feed slide to positively limit its feed stroke.

Abstract: Apparatus for feeding a bar or several bars in a vertical pile along a predetermined horizontal path extending through a bending station, where the bars are bent into desired shape. A first conveyor has mounted thereto a first gripper assembly, which releasably grips the bar or bars, for feeding successive requires lengths of the bar or bars to the bending station. Arranged collinearly with the first conveyor, a second conveyor has a second gripper assembly and coacts with the first conveyor for transporting the bar or bars through, and away from, the bending station with the progress of bar bending. The second gripper assembly is further movable up and down on the second conveyor. Upon completion of the bending of the bar or bars, the second gripper assembly grips the bent bar or bars while being lowered, then is raised for lifting the bar or bars out of engagement with the bending mechanism at the bending station, and then is transported by the second conveyor away from the bending station.

  • Patent number: 4577791
Abstract: The invention relates to a gripper or clamp feed advance mechanism for sheet metal bands or profiled forms on presses, having two feed advance clamps or grippers on the feed-side of the press and having a spacing therebetween in the direction of adjustment, whereby the feed advance and return stroke may be carried out between two press strokes. The purpose of the invention is a feed advance mechanism which makes possible the easiest adjustment of the feed advance path and the direction as well as of the spacing between the feed advance clamps or grippers, with a minimal feed advance force and practically any desired material dimension. It is intended that the spacing between the feed advance clamps or grippers (5) which determines the advance and return stroke, is achieved synchroneously through the adjustment of the crank radii (13) of the crank drive (10, 21, 23) by a common adjustment member (12).

Both clamps (3, 5) are self-closing, but are provided with pressure-operated opening devices (8, 9). The opening devices (8, 9) are controlled by a first control valve (12) which is changed over at the stroke ends of the piston (2) by dogs (13, 14). A second control valve (15) which controls the travel direction of the piston (2) is governed by the pressure medium fed to the opening devices (8, 9).To lift a load suspended from the cable (6), the piston (2) is raised, with the movable clamp (3) closed to grip the cable and the stationary clamp (5) open. At the top of the piston stroke, the stationary clamp (5) closes, the movable clamp (3) opens, and the piston (2) falls to enable the movable clamp (3) to grip the cable (6) again at a lower position.

Abstract: This invention includes apparatus providing for continuous motion and constant velocity to a traveling web usually including at least one film. A pair of grippers are arranged to grasp the film and are alternately actuated to advance the web. Each of the grippers are carried on the distal end of a reciprocated member. A motor is connected to a first shaft to turn four sprockets carried thereon. Each sprocket engages a roller chain assembly arranged in an endless manner and disposed to be moved in an oblong path. The roller chains are moved in a reciprocable path by one of a pair of crank arms driving and moving Pitman arms connected thereto. The oblong roller chains are operatively connected to and move lever arms pivotally connected to drag links which in turn move the reciprocated members. The apparatus includes a crank arm, a Pitman arm, drag links and reciprocable member with each as an assembly moved one hundred eighty degrees out-of-phase with a like assembly.

  • Patent number: 4364503
Abstract: There is disclosed web feeding apparatus and method for feeding a web from a web roll to a utilization device. The paying out of the web from the web roll into a U-shaped buffer loop is assisted by a pair of cooperating feed rolls which engage the web along the buffer loop. When the loop decreases to a certain extent, a sensing member causes the feed rolls to rotate to pay additional web material out of the web roll until the loop has increased to a certain extent. The web material extends from the buffer loop over the web roll and is guided to the utilization device, for example, a printer. The feed rolls can be caused to rotate when a manually engageable lever is moved in one direction. Alternatively the feed rolls can be separated and caused to rotate when the member is moved in the opposite direction. The apparatus also includes a reel assembly having a reel for handling web rolls having a variety of different widths.

This arrangement permits a substantial simplification in the valving and in the associated control lines over that normally required to produce the rapid successive alternate stock feed strokes of said feed slides; such thereby substantially reducing the cost of the feeder while increasing the reliability and durability thereof.
