The most prevalent defect associated with Friction Pull Plug Welding (FPPW) was a top side or inside skin line (ISL) lack of bonding. Bonding was not achieved at this location due to the reduction in both frictional heat and welding pressure between the plug and plate at the end of the weld. Thus, in order to eliminate the weld defects and increase the plug strength at the plug ‘top’ a small ‘hat’ section is added to the pull plug for added frictional heating and pressure.

    Abstract: Conventional apparatus for forming pressure vessels from tubing involves a separate step of the forming of the tubing into coils and then separately welding the coils together. The subject apparatus overcomes these problems by providing a collapsible mandrel to which tubing is wrapped to form coils for a pressure vessel and simultaneously welding the coils together in one step. The coils are guided on the mandrel by a carriage means which is controlled by a hydraulic system to maintain the coils into intimate contact with each other as they are being welded together. A welding torch, also carried by the carriage, is guided by the forming of the coils rather than some guide means to guide the welder independently of this operation.

    Abstract: A continuous and optimum weld is provided in the weld space between the attachment end of a secondary pipe and the outer surface of a primary pipe by means of a downwardly extending electric welding burner, the secondary pipe being oriented to extend at an angle to an imaginary central axis line extending through the primary pipe, by coordinating the vertical and horizontal positioning of the welding burner as the primary pipe is rotated, both around its imaginary central axis and end over end, so that the welding burner will be continuously aimed at the weld space and will operate at a constant current strength as the primary pipe rotates.

Metal profiles which can be deformed elastically are fastened, in a manner permitting detachment, to the periphery of the supporting body, spaced at regular intervals. The base body is composed of a metal sheet or strip which is wrapped around the profiles and attached to them in a manner permitting detachment. Preferably the profiles extend over the length of the supporting body. The deformable metal profiles may be designed as cylindrical tubes, without any discontinuities or as half-tubes, angle-profiles, Z-profiles, or corrugated-sheet profiles.

A sprocket wheel engages each chain to rotate the gripper assemblies and the vessel retained therebetween.
