    Abstract: A cigarette carton structure having a releasable adhesive seal to permit reopening of a temporarily sealed carton without damage to the carton. The seal includes a release coating on one of two carton surfaces to be adhesively joined. One of the surfaces may be a top flap and the other surface may be a closure flap. An adhesive is placed on the release coating, and the two surfaces are joined. The release coating may be a weakly cohesive material such as a metallic ink printed on the carton surface so that when the surfaces are separated, the release coating separates without damaging the carton. Alternatively the release surface can be a layer of material that adheres poorly to the adhesive, so that the adhesive readily separates from the release layer. In either case the initial temporary bonding must be sufficiently strong to allow handling, packing and unpacking of the cartons without premature opening.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for forming an envelope wherein front and rear panels of an envelope are incorporated in continuous or discrete webs or sheets. Heat activatable adhesive is applied to three peripheral edge portions of one of the envelope panels in facing engagement with the other of the panels. The webs or sheets are fixed together and fed into a printing machine such as a table or desk top laser printer wherein the heat fusing rolls of the printer are utilized to activate the heat activatable adhesive to thereby secure the envelope panels together to form an envelope pocket. One of the envelope panels incorporates a sealing flap portion which may be provided with a rewettable adhesive pattern, while the facing portion of the opposed sheet may be provided with an antistick composition to prevent premature sticking between the sheets in the area of the sealing flap.

The attached aligned tear-strips create a single multi-ply tear-strip assembly which facilitates the opening and emptying of the envelope. Opening of the tear-strip opening envelope apparatus is accomplished by pulling the reinforced multi-ply tear-strip member, at an end thereof, across the tear-strip opening envelope.

Thus, printing apparatus systems that have capabilities only for feed bin, paper tray or paper cassette feeding methods and are incapable of handling single business-size envelopes can be utilized for envelope printing with the present invention.

The unsealed edges of the envelope each have an anchor coating, and the message is formed by voids in the anchor coating on one edge. The cohesive layers have a stronger affinity for each other than for the anchor coating with the void regions, and so the message is revealed as the cohesive layer separates from the void-containing anchor coating when the sealed envelope is opened.

The back panel of the envelope is provided with a rupturable cut score line which is parallel to the bottom edge of the envelope and which is overlain by the closure flap of the envelope when the latter is closed. An initiating tab projects below the lower edge of the closure flap. The lower edge of the closure flap is parallel to the bottom edge of the envelope, and the closure flap is secured to the back panel of the envelope by a latex adhesive which is adherent without being moistened. Adhesive spots are provided on the inner surface of the envelope to releasably secure the contents in place in the envelope.

    Abstract: A disposable, self-sealing pouch is disclosed which is readily adaptable for use for sterilization, sterility maintenance, disposal of contaminated items, and like medical applications. The pouch includes first and second coextensive pouch webs which are marginally joined together to define the interior of the pouch. The first pouch web defines a transversely extending access opening slit through which articles may be inserted into the pouch. In order to effect closing and sealing of the access opening slit, the pouch includes adhesive means provided on the first pouch web on opposite sides of the access opening slit. By this construction, the pouch may be easily and securely sealed by folding the pouch onto itself so that the adhesive means is brought into confronting relation with itself, thus forming an adhesive-to-adhesive of the access opening slit.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an envelope of plastic sheet material consisting of a thermoplastic sheet, which is laminated to a sheet of hydrophilic material at least on the side forming the outside of the envelope. The flap belonging to the envelope is laminated to a paper layer at least on its inside, said layer supporting a gumming. The invention also relates to a method for continuously making such envelopes, a web of a plastic sheet laminated according to the above being folded with its edge portions towards a central area, which is left free. One or more paper webs are laminated to this central area and punched-out areas are made in the central area to a desired shape of the flaps of the envelopes. The envelopes are thereafter sealed along their sides by means of transversal welding seams and separated from each other.

    Abstract: A self-sealing closure for mailing bags, envelopes, sacks, or similar articles, in which a strip-shaped dry latex, synthetic resin or adhesive gum coating is applied on the inside of a closure flap and on an edge zone of the backside of the mailing bag. A template flap is formed at the free end of the backside, and the magnitude of the contact area between coatings on the closure flap and the backside is variable. The template flap can be folded about a crease line, and in one position of the template flap, there is exposed a partial area of the adhesive contact surfaces, to produce a printed-matter closure. The template flap has another position in which there is exposed the complete area of the adhesive surfaces which may be brought into contact to produce a first-class letter type of seal. The template flap, moreover, has contact cutouts which may have circular, oblong, rectangular, oval or other shapes. The contact cutouts, moreover, are punched out in the vicinity of the front edge of the template flap.

    Abstract: A compartmented envelope is disclosed which includes two compartments front-to-back formed by non-overlapping elongated end closure flaps. The front compartment includes a window behind which a preaddressed item might be placed and the envelope is arranged so that the window compartment is in front of the envelope stuffer when the preaddressed item is stuffed. The envelope panels are preapplied with a pressure sensitive adhesive that will only adhere to itself in a pattern so that items smaller than the envelope itself can be inserted and locked in place within the front compartment while the second compartment is available for larger more bulky items. In other embodiments, the envelope includes an unsecured end closure flap that may be opened for postal inspection when the envelope is carrying both first and third class matter, and/or a means for gaining access to one compartment independently of the other.

    Abstract: An apparatus for applying latex sealing material to the facing closure flap and opposed body portion of an envelope includes a continuous belt driven conveying means having a generally triangular path, with the envelopes being fed onto the conveying means at one point in the triangle, with the conveying means gripping each of a series of envelopes along its folded edge portion opposite the flap. As the envelopes are conveyed, the flap is first unfolded through an angle of approximately 180.degree. to a generally horizontal position, after which the envelope is passed between an impression roller and a latex applicator roller at which latex is applied to the facing closure flap and the body portion of the envelope. The impression roller and glue roller are disposed at the second point of the triangular path of the conveying means, and next the envelopes are passed through a dielectric dryer for drying the latex sealing material.

In the three-part construction, holes are provided in the bottom part so that the glue from the first part flap may extend therethrough so as to secure the second and third parts together.
