Coil Thermostat Patents (Class 236/101D)
  • Patent number: 4273283
Abstract: There is provided a self-regulating air register which includes a housing, louvres in the housing for closing and opening a flow path for air, a crank arm connected to the louvres which can, upon rotation, adjust the degree of closure, a shaft extending through the housing means, and a bi-metallic element connected at one end to the shaft and to a control knob at the other end. The control knob is mounted on the housing and is capable of selective adjustment in terms of angle. The bi-metallic element is thus adapted to regulate the angular orientation of the shaft with respect to the housing means, with an additional adjustment by the control knob. A lever is mounted on the shaft and extends perpendicularly from it. In the lever is a slot in which part of the crank arm is captive. At least part of the slot includes a portion disposed such that when part of the crank arm is located in the portion, the crank arm is caused to rotate as the lever rotates.

  • Patent number: 4243175
Abstract: An improved temperature regulated wall ventilator comprising a housing defining an air flow passageway therethrough, a plurality of louvers mounted in side by side relation in the housing passageway for pivotal movement about their longitudinal axes to open and close the air flow passageway, and temperature responsive helical spring control means located in the air flow passageway on an inner end portion of a stub shaft mounted on the housing. One end of the helical spring is attached to one of the louvers, and the other end of the spring is operatively attached to the stub shaft to prevent its relative rotation with respect thereto.

  • Patent number: 4233779
Abstract: An attachment for a plant protection device is described that automatically maintains a life sustaining environment over a broad range of ambient temperature conditions. The invention consists of a cylindrical collar adapted to be mounted on top of existing open ended plant covers or to be manufactured as an integral part of such a cover and contains a thermostatically controlled butterfly valve for ventilating the plant cover. The thermostat is responsive to ambient temperature outside the plant cover which activates the butterfly valve for controlling the release of warm air from inside the container. The collar and butterfly valve are so designed to provide adequate light and ventilation without wind chill to the protected plants and also includes protection against flying insects and random or unwanted pollination.

  • Patent number: 4227646
Abstract: A valve which opens and closes according to the temperature of the fluid passing through it has a fluid-controlling valve member consisting of a helix of a shape memory effect material having an elastic modulus which varies significantly with temperature in a reversible manner. At relatively low fluid temperature, the turns of the helix are closely compacted and obstruct the flow, while at relatively high fluid temperature, the turns are expanded and allow flow of fluid between them.

  • Patent number: 4210279
Abstract: An automatic temperature responsive ventilator including a housing having side walls defining an air passageway and an openwork grid across the passageway. At least one shutter is mounted within the housing, with one end of one shutter element being associated with a bimetallic spring that is received within an opening in one housing side wall. A cap is received over the spring from the outside to hold the spring in place and protect the spring from the elements and from damage during installation. An outer end of the spring is held by a slot in the side wall and an inner end of the spring is secured to a rod that is attached to the shutter. Variations in ambient temperature cause the shutter element to open and close automatically.

  • Patent number: 4190140
Abstract: A fluid coupling device is disclosed of the type including a valve member actuated by a valve shaft extending through the cover, the position of the valve and valve shaft being controlled by a temperature responsive bimetal coil. The coil has a first end attached to the valve shaft and a second end received within a clip member to prevent circumferential movement of the second end of the coil. The clip member includes wing portions which are generally parallel to the adjacent surface of the cover. After the clip and the bimetal coil are assembled, the coil is permitted to achieve its neutral position in both the radial and circumferential direction, and subsequently, each of the wing portions is attached to the adjacent portion of the cover without causing substantial radial or circumferential movement of the second end of the coil. As a result, the coil is able to withstand extreme vibration conditions, but is not subject to the high hysteresis which normally occurs with a rigid mounting of the coil.

  • Patent number: 4187815
Abstract: The intake fuel charge of an internal combustion engine is heated by utilizing the heat from the exhaust gases which are controlled by a valve mounted on a shaft having a counterweight secured to the shaft to control rotation thereof. A stopper which is engaged by the counterweight is provided for limiting the extent of rotation of the shaft and a spiral bimetallic member is arranged with its inner end secured to the shaft and with its outer end adapted to engage the stopper during engine warm up at relatively low ambient temperature conditions. An engagement member is mounted on the bimetallic member to engage the stopper when the second end of the bimetallic member moves in the direction opposite the direction whereby it would normally engage the stopper. The engagement member may be mounted a distance spaced from the outer end or it may be secured in back-to-back relationship with a second stopper member being provided.

  • Patent number: 4114805
Abstract: A damper assembly for conserving fuel consumption in a heating furnace comprises baffle means pivotally mounted in support means arranged to fit in an outlet flue communicating between the furnace and a chimney stack so that the baffle means is movable between a fully open position whereby the flow of combustion gases from the furnace to the stack is substantially unimpeded and a fully closed position providing a restricted flow path for the gases whereby the gas flow to the stack is reduced. Associated wth the baffle means is thermostatic control means responsive to the temperature of the combustion gases for moving the baffle means to the fully open position at a relatively low temperature indicating that the furnace is inoperative and for moving the baffle means to the fully closed position at a relatively high temperature indicating that the furnace is operative.
