Patent number: 6393644Abstract: A bridge joint for use with a railroad track having standard rail sections with flanges. The bridge joint includes a fixed point having a forward integral accepting portion with a point and flanges rearward of the accepting portion. The joint also has a moveable body having a forward interface portion adapted to be slidingly accepted in the accepting portion. The moveable body has a notch adapted to accept the point. Clamping lugs are positioned on the accepting portion and the interface portion. The fixed point and the moveable body are clamped to base plates and quick release fasteners are positioned to engage the flanges of the fixed point, moveable body, and a flange of each of the standard rail sections and secure all to the base plates.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2000Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: Progress Rail Services Corp.Inventor: Brian F. Weaver

Patent number: 6363564Abstract: A bridge joint for use with a railroad track having standard rail sections with flanges. The bridge joint includes a fixed point section having an integral accepting portion with a point and laterally spaced side walls, and a standard rail abutting portion. The joint also has a moveable point section having a yoke portion with a point and laterally spaced side walls, and a standard rail abutting portion. A rocker arm has a moveable interface portion adapted to be pivotally attached to said yoke portion and a fixed interface portion adapted to be received in said accepting portion. Clamping lugs arc positioned on the side walls of the accepting portion and the yoke portion. The fixed point section and the moveable point section are clamped to base plates with clamping members that engage the clamping lugs.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2001Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignee: Progress Rail Services Corp.Inventor: Brian F. Patent number: 6068196Abstract: An expansion joint for part of a railway track arranged on a foundation has a stock rail with a stock rail head and a tongue movable with respect to and along said stock rail head, upon which at least one fastening device acys for pressing it on the stock rail. This expansion joint enables the rail foot to be lingitudinally moved with little friction and excludes tipping of the stock rail or tongue. For that purpose, the tongue is not bolted, but pressed only against the stock rail by the fastening device, and the force thus transmitted is decomposed into components that act, on the other hand, in the direction of the foundation and, on the other hand, in the direction of the stock rail head. The force is transmitted by a rolling element extending from a shaft which is anchored to the foundation.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1996Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Assignee: BWG Butzbacher Weichenbau, GmbHInventors: Sebastian Benenowski, Hubertus Hohne, Alfred Kais, Erich Nuding

Patent number: 5634591Abstract: Sliding joint system in a railway track allowing a great longitudinal excursion--particularly for suspension bridges--comprising, for each rail of the track, a first fixed rail (1) having an end tapered on the outwardly facing sides of the track, and a second rail (2) positioned next to the tapered surface of the first rail (1) and sliding along the same, while continuously extending beyond the tapered surface in an oblique direction, outwardly of the track, at an acute angle. The base flange of the second rail (2) is preferably of reduced width, equal to that of its head, so as to be more flexible.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1995Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Assignee: Stretto Di Messina S.p.A.Inventor: William Brown

Patent number: 4785994Abstract: A sliding joint of the type designed to permit expansion and contraction between adjoining ends of rail sections in a single or double track system is characterized by having a rail point defining an extension of one adjoining end which is both lengthened and reinforced along the area adjacent to its juncture with the one adjoining end to more effectively absorb and distribute stresses imparted under wheel loading. A limit stop for the curved end of the rail section is mounted on the base of the joint ahead of the juncture of the rail point with the one adjoining end of the rail so as to further alleviate stresses imparted by the curved rail to the rail point when the curved rail undergoes maximum expansion.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1987Date of Patent: November 22, 1988Inventors: Walter G. Crone, Harry B. Cundiff

Patent number: 4171774Abstract: The specification describes an improved railroad track expansion joint which is comprised of a pair of longitudinally aligned elongated joint members interconnected with one another by means of a dovetail joint formed along abutting faces which extend at an acute angle to the members. The other ends of the joint members are connected to conventional rails and any expansion and contraction of the rails will cause the members to slide relative one another along the abutting face.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1977Date of Patent: October 23, 1979Inventor: Alphege P.
