During operation, the liquid pump is located below the liquid container and liquid flowing from the compression chamber is accelerated and atomized. The atomized liquid enters the mixing chamber at a velocity sufficient to draw in air from the air inlet to mix with the liquid to form a foam.

Inside the mixing unit (6), water mist, in the form of an atomized mist of very small droplet size is mixed with the pressurized gas and exits the mixing unit (6) at high pressure and high velocity along a pipe (22) and is thence discharged through spreaders (26, 28). The source (5) of the water is pressurized by a feed (30) from the source of pressurized inert gas. The mass flow rate of the water will therefore reduce as the pressure of the gas decays. This tends to maintain the ratio of the mass flow rate of the water to the mass flow rate of the gas constant. This is found to produce and maintain an advantageous distribution of droplet size in the discharged unit.

    Abstract: In a second tank unit, a controller controls the on/off switching of a water supply solenoid valve so that water is stored in a sub tank within the level of Lu to Ll. As a result, regardless of the water level in the sub tank, the back pressure in the tank is maintained at the target value higher than atmospheric pressure. In this state, when a central controller turns on a water spouting solenoid valve, pressured water rapidly spouts from a nozzle. Moreover, a change in the target values of the back pressure promptly changes the height of the spouting water. Accordingly, water spouting can be promptly started/stopped, and the height or size of the spouting water can be readily and smoothly changed.

Air streams propelled through the passageways draw high viscosity material through the larger suction tube and catalyst through a smaller suction tube into those air streams. Intersection of those air streams outside of the nozzle mixes the catalyst material with the high viscosity material.
