    Abstract: A fuel nozzle for a gas turbine engine includes a fuel tube enclosed by a housing. The fuel tube and housing are connected by a movable joint including a tubular seat formed on the housing and a boss formed on the fuel tube so as to be disposed within the tubular seat. The boss includes a contact surface that is in sliding engagement with the tubular seat and is rotatable about an axis that is perpendicular to the seat's longitudinal axis. The fuel nozzle further includes a fixed joint that connects the housing to the same section of the fuel tube as the movable joint.

    Abstract: A coal gasification nozzle is disclosed having a barrier, integral with the face of the injector, that fits into a groove of a heat shield attached to the nozzle face. The barrier prevents oxidative corrosion of the shield, and subsequent damage to the underlying face of the feed injector, by preventing diffusion of corrosive species to the threaded ring by which the heat shield is attached to the face of the nozzle. The life of the injector, and thus the length of any single gasification campaign, is thereby extended.

    Abstract: A self-contained thermo-mechanically self-opening steam head that is normally generally flush with a supporting steam room wall when not in use so as not to pose a safety hazard. The steam head has a mechanical thermostat that automatically responds to the presence of heat as from steam to move a deflector plate, which normally generally blocks a steam outlet from the head, to an open position. That open position is spaced from but closely in front of the steam outlet. This allows steam to flow out of the outlet, but the deflector plate diverts the outward steam flow to a direction generally along the supporting wall. When the steam is shut off, the thermostat cools and thereby causes the deflector plate to return to its closed, blocking position. There is no electrical wiring or connection which could pose a major safety hazard in the presence of water.

    Abstract: A dual temperature valve positioned in a bypass passageway can move to an open position when two temperature conditions are met. When opened, the dual temperature valve can allow warm fluid from a first line to mix with cold fluid from a second line to heat the same. The valve is preferably utilized in an engine fuel system and positioned in a bypass passageway extending between a fuel supply line and a fuel return line. In this application, the dual temperature valve can prevent possible fuel transfer problems, such as cold start gaseous circulation.

    Abstract: A shape memory alloy actuator assembly for a fuel injector, having a small package integral design, wherein the response times of the shape memory alloy element is decreased to less than about 1 millisecond by forced, convective heat transfer from the SMA element or elements. The forced, convective heat transfer is provided by the circulation of fluid across the SMA element by a metering orifice plate, which directs a fluid flow across the SMA element so as to maximize the area of contact between the fuel and the SMA element, regardless of whether the fuel injection valve is opened or closed. Use of forced convective heat transfer in accordance with the present invention allows greater power input levels than previously possible without resulting in an over-temperature condition of the SMA alloy, as well as constant response times.

    Abstract: The fuel injector nozzle for a gasifier includes a protective refractory sheath that is flush mounted at a downstream end proximate the nozzle outlet portion. The refractory insert is of annular form to surround the nozzle outlet. Whether the annular refractory member is a one-piece structure or a multi-segment structure, it is recessed in a downstream end surface of the fuel injector nozzle and retained in the recess by locking pins or by thread-like engagement between a projection and a groove that are provided on complementary inter-engaging surfaces of the recess and the refractory member. The retaining structure provided on the annular refractory member and at the recess in which the refractory member is disposed securely maintain the annular refractory protective member in position.
