Worm And Tooth Patents (Class 24/274R)
  • Patent number: 4445254
Abstract: Hose band clip with a tightening strap and a turnbuckle which is secured to one end of the tightening strap and to which a turnbuckle worm, that cooperates with gearing of the tightening strap in order to adjust the strap, is pivoted. Narrow openings are formed in longitudinal sidewalls of the housing of the turnbuckle which, when the tightening strap is tightened, are deformed by a predetermined large tension force transmitted from the worm to the housing of the turnbuckle to provide an optical indication that the tension force should not be increased any further.

  • Patent number: 4308648
Abstract: Hose clamps are disclosed comprising a band, band section, or attachment to a band, which yields in a direction circumferentially of the band and which possesses a spring-like quality and/or action such that the clamp is essentially self-adjusting to compensate for thermal expansion and contraction of the assembly (clamp, hose and fitting), as well as for the aging or cold set which the hose undergoes, whereby a fluid-tight seal is maintained throughout the intended life of the assembly, without requiring the clamp to be re-tightened. The bands of the clamps are open-ended and of generally circular configuration and are provided with a tangentially located or oriented worm drive screw for closing the clamp and providing a greater and closer range of adjustment in closing the clamp. The clamps, in some cases, have incorporated therein a positive stop, whereby closure of the clamp can be limited to a specified or predetermined size or diameter.

  • Patent number: 4307495
Abstract: A hose clamp wherein the slotted strap portion is cut to a desired clamp size from a stock supply length. The clamp provides a housing for the two ends of the cut portion. Projections carried by the housing permit a first end of the strap to be removably engaged with the housing. A second member, preferably the second end of the strap, fills the space above the attached first end to interfere with the movement of the first end off the projection. Thus the assembly of a cut strap portion and a drive housing can be accomplished without tools.

  • Patent number: 4300270
Abstract: The housing for the screw of a hose clip has a tubular section with a flat bottom wall a portion of which extends laterally beyond the tubular section and is overlapped by a plate-like second portion forming part of and being inclined with reference to a side wall of the tubular section. When the screw is rotated in a direction to tension the band which is placed around a hose, pipe or a like structure, the screw tends to move the extension toward such structure. The extension is or can be hollow to receive parts of the overlapping end portions of the band. Reinforcing ribs are provided at the outside of the housing between the side wall of the tubular section and the extension. The housing is made of a sheet metal blank which is deformed to form the tubular section and the two portions of the extension, and such portions of the extension are thereupon welded to each other.

  • Patent number: 4257149
Abstract: A band clamp device of the invention employs a U-shaped housing for the drive worm screw, usually formed by progressive stamping from sheet metal. The separate arms of the U embrace the band edges and the respective separate arm ends extend beneath the band. The housing can have a single ear only on one of the said separate arm ends extending through a respective cooperating slot in the band to connect the housing to the band. Usually the housing will have a single ear at each end, and the single ear adjacent the screw head end is provided on the said separate downside arm end, which is the arm end that receives the maximum force tending to spread the housing arms apart as the band is tightened about an object. It is found that such a structure is able to resist the forces tending to spread the housing arms and to separate the housing from the band, and it permits a wider ear to be used, or alternatively a narrower band for the same width ear.

  • Patent number: 4244088
Abstract: A hose clip wherein the housing is made of an originally flat sheet metal blank and has a tubular section for the shank of a rotary screw mating with one end portion of a band whose end portions extend through the tubular section between the thread on the shank and a flat bottom wall of the tubular section. The head of the screw has a tubular portion which surrounds one end portion of the tubular section so as to hold such end portion against radial and/or axial movement relative to the screw whereby the head cannot penetrate into and cannot expand the tubular section while it rotates in a direction to tension the band around the end portion of a hose or an analogous structure. The tubular portion may be integral with the remaining portion of the head, it can be bonded to such remaining portion or it may be rotatably mounted on the shank adjacent to the remaining portion of the head.

  • Patent number: 4237588
Abstract: A clamp for pipes or the like has a band whose width is constant save for two recesses in the marginal portions of one of its end portions which is received in the housing of the clamp. The bottom wall of the housing has projections which enter the recesses and the recesses are bounded by S-shaped lugs, at least at those ends which are nearer to the respective end of the band. Such lugs abut against the respective end face of the bottom wall of the housing to prevent extraction of the band when a threaded portion of the band meshes with a tightening screw which is mounted in the housing and can be rotated in a direction to reduce the size of the loop between the end portion and the threaded portion of the band.

  • Patent number: 4021892
Abstract: The invention relates to straps which include an elongate strap portion, a housing at one end of the strap and a screw member which is adapted to be positioned in the housing to draw the strap portion through the housing. In particular, the invention relates to straps which are easily drawn to a predetermined tension about an article by means of a screw member having a weakened section between the head and the threaded shank. The weakened section fractures when a predetermined torque on the screw member is reached, preventing overtightening and also indicating that the required tension in the strap portion has been reached. The screw may have two heads, the second head being revealed when the first breaks off, to permit the strap portion to be released. Straps according to the invention may also be used as security seals, if no second head is provided, as then the strap must be broken to be removed.

  • Patent number: 3981053
Abstract: A two-part worm drive clamp embodying a first part in the form of a tensioning strip having a housing-enclosed, slack take-up worm at one end and a tab at its other end, and a second part in the form of a ribbon-like, band-forming strip having a tab-receiving cut-out or opening at one end and a longitudinal series of generally transverse, worm-engaging slots extending inwardly from its other end. The desired size of the clamp is attained by wresting the second part from a tandem or one-in-front-of-the-other array of unit band lengths in a roll of preformed band-forming stock, the requisite number of unit lengths being dependent upon the required size of the band of the clamp. An important feature of the invention resides in the nature of the interlock which is established between the tab and the tab-receiving opening, the interlock being such that it is unnecessary angularly to displace either part in order either to effect or disconnect the interlock.

  • Patent number: 3950830
Abstract: A worm gear type hose clamp having quick attachment and release features. A housing carries a worm or screw member which is meshable with a toothed or slotted portion of a band. The band has a ramp portion which is, preferably, an integral part thereof. The housing is movable along the ramp portion of the band, from a part of lesser extension to a portion of greater extension, to urge the worm into meshed engagement with the toothed portion of the band. In such position of the housing, the band is tightened or loosened by rotative movement of the worm. The housing also is movable along the ramp portion from the part of greater extension to the part of lesser extension to release the worm from meshed engagement with the toothed portion of the band and to permit free movement of the toothed portion of the band without rotative movement of the worm. The band has portions which limit movement of the housing with respect thereto.
