A controlled amount of binding can be introduced by controlling the degree of non-colinearity between mating surfaces such that when using a high modulus material, such as Titanium, the use of this system for body piercing openings such as ear and nose rings is successful without reduced risk of loss of jewelry pieces due to vibration, because threaded connections in this arrangement are avoided. Configurations according to the invention can be used in a variety of tiny jewelry pieces as long as a stem can be inserted into a stem receiving member.

  • Patent number: 6138333
Abstract: An earring includes a pin adapted to pass through a hole pierced in an ear or other body part. The pin has an enlarged, decorative end thereon which rests against one side of the ear with the pin extending through the hole in the ear, and a clutch which fits over the opposite end of the pin and rests against the opposite side of the ear to hold the earring therein. The clutch includes a spring for receiving the pin therein and having a reduced inside diameter intermediate turn thereof which is stretched by the pin as it passes therethrough. There is at least one circumferential receiving groove in the pin to receive and hold the reduced inside diameter spring turn. Thus, the clutch may be positioned so that the reduced inside diameter turn is received in one of the at least one grooves. This resists movement of the clutch along the pin. With multiple grooves the grooves are positioned along the pin so that for each groove, the earring comfortably fits a different size ear.

  • Patent number: 6134917
Abstract: An apparatus and system for securing jewelry to a person's body, or to secure together the ends of a piece of jewelry. In one embodiment, an earring back for receiving a post of an earring has a base having a base aperture therein for receiving the post, and a first primary leg extending from a first end of the base, and a second primary leg extending from a second end of the base. A first spring leg extends from the first primary leg, the first spring leg having front face having a front aperture therein for receiving the post. A second spring leg extends from the second primary leg, the second spring leg having intermediate face having an intermediate aperture therein for receiving the post. The spring legs are biased such that when the earring back is uncompressed or not under external applied compressive forces, the front aperture, the intermediate aperture, and the base aperture are in axial misalignment.

  • Patent number: 6058581
Abstract: An elongated semi-product from which a clasp can be formed includes at each end at least one through-penetrating hole wherein when bent to form said clasp the semi-product forms a generally closed cavity with the mutually opposite ends of said product forming overlapping legs and the openings at the ends of said semi-product being intended to coincide in one position of the legs to enable said stem-part to be inserted easily through the two holes in said legs, wherein in another position of said legs the holes provided in the edge regions of the ends of said legs will be pressed against a portion of reduced diameter on the stem so as to hold an ornament in place. According to the invention, at least one of the two opposing openings in the semi-product has an elongated and irregular shape so as to include at least two holes of different sizes, and at least one opening extends transversely to the longitudinal axis of the semi-product.

  • Patent number: 5987718
Abstract: A clutch fastener is provided for securely receiving pins, shafts, and the like. The clutch fastener includes a housing and a coil spring disposed within a central chamber contained in the housing. The chamber originates near the top surface of the housing and extends through the bottom surface. The bottom surface is countersunk to provide for easy insertion of the shaft. The chamber is sized such that it has a larger diameter than the shaft to be retained. The shaft is inserted into the chamber and retained by frictional forces generated against the coil spring. The clutch fastener may allow the user to selectively increase the tension placed on the shaft via a locking mechanism. The clutch fastener may also be provided with a second spring disposed within the chamber in order to limit the degree of compression of the first spring. Various designs are also disclosed for the spring stock from which the coil spring is formed.

  • Patent number: 5893278
Abstract: An improved retaining mechanism for use with a pierced earring having an ornament having a stem. The retaining mechanism has a base with an opening therein through which the stem of the earring passes, a cylindrical tube extending from the base with threads on an external surface. An inner wall of the tube tapers from its open end toward the base. A cap is provided that has a closed end with an opening therein through which the stem of the earring passes. The cap has threads formed on an inner surface that mate with the threads on the external surface of the cylindrical tube. A tapered member extends from the closed end of the cap and is tapered along its exterior wall. The external taper of the tapered member substantially matches the internal taper of the cylindrical tube. The tapered member has a slot formed in its wall.
