Comminuting Zone Interposed Between Plural Separators Patents (Class 241/77)
  • Patent number: 8985487
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for selectively separating polyurethane foam and fiber from Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR). The apparatus includes a first separator, a second separator, and a third separator. The first separator primarily separates fine particles, such as dirt or glass pieces, from the ASR at a front portion thereof and separates large-sized polyurethane foam and fiber from the ASR at a rear portion thereof. The second separator grinds remaining materials after the primary separation of the first separator. The third separator separates medium-sized polyurethane foam and fiber from the remaining materials after the separation of the first separator and secondarily separates plastics, rubber, and other materials.

Abstract: Fine particle coal is beneficiated in specially designed dense medium cyclones to improve particle acceleration and enhance separation efficiency. Raw coal feed is first sized to remove fine coal particles. The coarse fraction is then separated into clean coal, middlings, and refuse. Middlings are comminuted for beneficiation with the fine fraction. The fine fraction is deslimed in a countercurrent cyclone circuit and then separated as multiple fractions of different size specifications in dense medium cyclones. The dense medium contains ultra-fine magnetite particles of a narrow size distribution which aid separation and improves magnetite recovery. Magnetite is recovered from each separated fraction independently, with non-magnetic effluent water from one fraction diluting feed to a smaller-size fraction, and improving both overall coal and magnetite recovery.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for separating coal from impurities, which comprises a first and second tank including drag conveyor means and agitation means for the combination of saturating a raw mass containing coal and impurities, dispersing the impurities in to water, separating the coal from the impurities and flowing the mass from the front of the tanks to the rear of the tanks. A crusher as arranged between the tanks through conveyor means for transferring the mass between from one tank to the crusher and from the crusher to the other tank. The mass from the second tank is conveyed in to a separator pan which includes a separator plate, the separator plate having a configuration and being located within the separator pan at a position, so that an upper flow portion of the mass having a lower specific gravity passes thereover, and so that a lower flow portion of the mass having a higher specific gravity passes thereunder and out a hole in the bottom of the separator.

  • Patent number: 4498633
Abstract: Apparatus for processing coal to prevent the creation of extreme fines and to extract pyrites from the principal coal fractions in which there are two air circulating circuits having processing components which cooperate in their respective circuits to result initially in substantial extraction of fines in the first circuit while releasing principal granulated coal fractions and pyrites to the second circuit where specific gravity separation of the pyrites and principal coal fractions occur. The apparatus includes a source of drying heat added to the air moving in the circuits and delivered at the places where surface moisture drying is most effective. Furthermore, the apparatus is operated so as to reduce coal to a desired size without creating an excessive volume of extreme fines, to separate pyrites and hard to grind components by specific gravity in a region where fines are not present, and to use the extreme fines as a source of fuel to generate drying heat.

  • Patent number: 4348274
Abstract: A size fraction of oil shale is upgraded by separating the shale into a first low density fraction containing particles relatively rich in kerogen and a first high density fraction containing particles relatively lean in kerogen, crushing the first low density fraction to produce smaller particles, separating the smaller particles into a second low density fraction and a second high density fraction and recovering the second low density fraction as high grade oil shale rich in kerogen.

  • Patent number: 4222529
Abstract: An apparatus for separating a material into a fine and a coarse component is disclosed incorporating a primary and a secondary cyclone separator. A primary pump is connected to the input of the primary cyclone separator for injecting material therein. The primary cyclone separator discharges the fine component of the material from a fine component output and discharges the coarse component of the material from a coarse component output. The fine component output of the primary cyclone separator is connected to the input of the secondary cyclone separator thereby producing additional fine component material and additional coarse component material. A single primary pump is utilized for the primary and secondary cyclone separators operating as a system.

  • Patent number: 4191336
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for recovering magnetite from fly ash. Fly ash containing magnetite is made into a slurry having 5% to 10% solids by weight and the slurry is then concentrated in a settling tank to a slurry having approximately 20% solids by weight. The concentrated slurry is delivered to a magnetic separator where the magnetite is separated from the remainder of the fly ash. The magnetite is then crushed in a pulverizer to a size so that 95% of the crushed magnetite will pass through a 325 mesh sieve. The crushed magnetite is then delivered to a second magnetite separator which is weaker than the first magnetic separator to separate the crushed magnetite from any impurities. The purified crushed magnetite is then dried and stored.

Abstract: Refuse, particularly of the household type, is sorted according to density by the following consecutive operations: Sifting the refuse; comminuting the oversize obtained; separating the comminuted material by a gas stream into light and heavy material fractions; separating the heavy material fraction by a liquid stream into two fractions of different density; and separating the two fractions of different density into basic components.

  • Patent number: 4018567
Abstract: Whole or shredded lead-acid batteries, together with a quantity of sodium carbonate and water, are fed continuously into a rotating drum separator containing a charge of grinding balls. Agitation of the mixture, aided by the internal drum construction features, further breaks up and degrades the battery fragments, neutralizes any contaminating electrolyte, transposes the finer particles of lead sulfate into lead carbonate, and forms a heavy-medium suspension of the active material on which organic battery fragments float. The suspension of active material constantly overflows from the drum at one end and carries the organic fragments with it into a first trommel, while sinkable fragments of grid metal and other battery parts of lower grade antimonial lead alloy are mechanically removed at the opposite end and deposited in a second trommel.

  • Patent number: 3973736
Abstract: A device for recovering salvagable components from a mixture of compacted solid waste, especially municipal waste, which includes ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, fibrous organic and inorganic materials. In this installation the solid waste, preferably after first breaking it up, is fed to a magnet assembly for dividing the components into ferrous metals and non-ferrous materials including ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals and organic or inorganic materials. The ferrous metals and the non-ferrous materials containing ferrous metals are then subjected to fragmentation after separating ferrous metals parts from non-ferrous materials. The resulting fragments are separated into ferrous metals and non-ferrous materials and separately conveyed to collection stations. Similarly, the non-ferrous metals and the organic or inorganic materials are first fragmented, then separated from each other and finally separately conveyed to collecting stations.

  • Patent number: RE34458
Abstract: A screening machine has a rotating screening drum for screening dirt or other material to a desired size through the screen openings, and is made so that it reduces clogging of the screen, even when rocks, dirt clods, and moist dirt is being screened. The rotating drum has interior brushes and a beater bar for keeping the material moving on the interior of the drum. A holding bin and feeding conveyor is used at the input end of the machine and is positioned to empty into an input pulverizer or shredder, that has a powered drum that will break the dirt clods up. The holding bin has a cover grate to remove excessively large rocks and the like. The output from the pulverizing roller also drops material onto a grate through which the material passes before reaching the screening drum. These grates are called "grizzly bars" and help in the classification process. The screening drum can be converted to a mixer drum by lining the screen wall with sheet metal and removing the normally used interior brushes.
