Abstract: The uniformity and suitability of fractural glass derived from breaking used fluorescent tubes for separation of the glass and potentially toxic powder adhered to the fractured glass prior to disposal and recovery of the components glass and powder is improved by use of a fracture blade having a sharp striking point extending forwardly from a base composed of a flat transversely oriented rotatable striking blade. The blade is preferably, for best results in later separation of the glass particulates and powder, operated at a striking blade speed of 1760 to 3700 feet per minute, providing a uniformity and size of fractured glass upon which a significantly more effective countercurrent air separation can be made.

  • Patent number: 5375776
Abstract: The invention relates to the comminution of material for grinding, particularly for the production of cement, wherein the material for grinding is comminuted in a mill and the comminution product is classified in a classification zone into fines and oversize material and the oversize material is returned to the mill. With a view to effective influencing of the breadth of the particle size distribution as well as a relatively low specific energy consumption the comminution product is classified in the classification zone in at least two air separators which are connected one behind the other in series, and a proportion of the oversize material from the first air separator is returned directly to the mill, the remaining proportion being delivered to the second air separator.

Abstract: A grizzly-type separator is disposed across the path of fractured glass particulates to separate electrical tips from said glass particulates. The separator is formed preferably from round separator bars of about twice the average maximum diameter of fractured glass and about equal to the maximum average diameter of the fractured glass particulates. The separator bars are discontinuous in the center to cause a change in orientation of objects moving down the bars and are secured together by cross bars spaced significantly from the separator bars.

  • Patent number: 5374316
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method for separating milled sugarcane pith from flattened rind upon discharge from a depithing station. The method includes dividing the discharge by a fixed deflector, preferably with a blunt upstream edge, into a primary pith flow and a rind flow which includes a secondary pith flow, and thereafter removing pith from the rind flow and diverting it to join pith from the primary pith flow. Preferred embodiments capture the pith in interstices of a rotating brush which merges with the secondary pith flow, turning such pith away from the rind flow, and then releasing it.

  • Patent number: 5373997
Abstract: The invention is directed to a new method for producing milled grain products such as flour, semolina, middlings, etc., wherein the material is repeatedly ground by means of rolls and sifted with the system of advanced milling. It is suggested that the material be guided again at least twice via double-roll grinding stages with sifting between the double grindings, wherein the material is sifted in each instance following the double grinding. In an especially preferred manner, a corresponding new mill with at least two double-grinding passes is preferably constructed as an 8-roll mechanism (70). In an especially preferred manner, the new mill comprises a combination of eight- (70) and four-roll mechanisms (142, 151). A screening surface which is at least 20 to 50 % larger is used for the double grinding.

  • Patent number: 5366165
Abstract: Used automotive type oil filters are provided in drums to a tipper which operates to deposit the filters therefrom into a feed hopper. An input feed conveyor receives the filters from the hopper and conveys the filters to a coarse shredder. Shredded pieces are deposited from the coarse shredder onto a conveyor which deposits the pieces into a fine shredder from which the shredded pieces exit onto either another conveyor for transport to a hammer mill shredder or to a washer input conveyor for transport into a washing drum. A magnetic separator may be disposed between the hammer mill shredder and washing drum to separate out ferrous materials for transport to the drum. Oil that drips and seeps from the shredders, hopper and conveyors is collected in wells and conducted therefrom through filters and under pump action to a waste oil storage tank.

  • Patent number: 5248100
Abstract: A rotor shearing type crusher for crushing municipal waste and industrial waste whether it is bulky or not. If any foreign material, which is impossible to crush, is mixed with the municipal waste or industrial waste, the foreign material is promptly discriminated and discharged separately. The crusher includes a casing, a feed plate and a cutter respectively rotatably mounted to the casing obliquely above two rotatable knives. The inclination of the feed plate and cutter can be changed freely. Cutouts rae provided on the top end of the feed plate and cutter in a comb-like manner to dodge cutting edges of the rotatable knives intersecting each other. A discharge port is divided into two sections. The crusher of such a construction performs a function of tearing off soft waste twining itself around the rotatable knives. Rigid material impossible to be crushed is separately discharged. Even dangerous small waste such as cartridges, cylinders, etc. can be crushed and degassed inside without fail.

  • Patent number: 5197678
Abstract: The invention comprises a method and apparatus for recycling foamed polystyrene from municipal solid waste and more particularly, from fast food restaurant waste. A steady stream of waste is delivered to a flail mill for reducing particle size, a rotary trommel for eliminating undersized waste and a rotary air classifier for removing "heavy" waste from the stream. At this point, the waste stream comprises mostly paper and foamed polystyrene. The paper and foamed polystyrene are delivered to a water pulper which fiberizes the paper so that it can then be separated from the foamed polystyrene by passing it through a screen of selected mesh size to allow the water and paper pulp to pass through while retaining the foamed polystyrene.
