  • Patent number: 5873536
Abstract: In combination, an auxiliary casting reel and supportive mounting attachment for a conventional winding reel or boat-type fishing reel having two spaced apart plates connected together by evenly spaced elongated transverse frame posts. The auxiliary casting reel includes an auxiliary spool generally similar to that of a spinning-type fishing reel and preferably having a flat back plate and a spaced conical shaped front face which facilitates free spool casting. The mounting attachment includes an elongated adapter pivotally connected at one end to a spool extension of the auxiliary spool, the adapter having spaced parallel first and second grooves sized in width and length to dependently engage against adjacent frame posts. A thumb screw secures the second groove around one frame post after the first groove is self-aligningly engaged against another frame post.

  • Patent number: 5806776
Abstract: A friction brake for a fishing reel comprises an arcuate strip of bendable plastic that is cantilevered from a fixed flange of a fishing reel and extends over and generally concentrically with a rotating flange of the reel. When braking action is required to stop or restrain the playing-out of fishing line, pressure on the free edge of the brake causes contact between a brake surface and the outer periphery of the rotating reel flange. The degree of braking depends upon the area of the brake that is brought into contact with the rotating reel flange by the fisherman and upon the magnitude of force applied by the fisherman's hand onto the brake. The brake attaches at its fixed edge to the non-moving portion of the reel by means of an adhesive layer. Alternative embodiments that contact the fishing line extend from fixed portions of the reel.

  • Patent number: 5799889
Abstract: A bail for a spinning fishing reel is provided. The reel includes a reciprocating spool for storing fishing line and a rotor mounted for rotation about the spool to retrieve and wind the line around the spool. The reel further includes a crank arm which, when actuated, causes reciprocating motion of the spool and rotation of the rotor. The bail includes first and second support ends and a central section coupled between the first and second ends. The first and second ends are coupled to the rotor at opposed locations and are pivotable with respect to the rotor to move the bail between an open and a closed position. In the open position a user may cast the line and in the closed position retrieve it. When the bail is in the closed position, the central section guides the line to a line guide. The bail further includes at least one counterbalance weight supported on the central section. The weight provides rotational balancing of the rotor to ensure smooth operation of the reel.

  • Patent number: 5720441
Abstract: An attachment for controlling the distance of a casting lure attached to an end of a fishing line, includes a pressure pad extending from and connected to at least a portion of a distal lip of a spinning reel spool. During casting of the lure and line, the line on each revolution of the reel passes along an outer surface of the pressure pad, such that the fisherman can press his casting finger on the line against the pressure pad with varying intermittent finger pressure to increase and decrease drag on the line as the line spools off the spool and passes over the pressure pad. This assures greater casting accuracy so that the lure will land at a desired landing spot.

  • Patent number: 5695139
Abstract: A wheel, journalled on supports atop the reel housing has a slot formed therein. Limbs attached to both the wheel, and the reel thumb actuator, cause the wheel to rotate in common with depression of the actuator, and dispose the slot rearwardly. The slot latchingly receives the hook of a lure, with the fishing rod bent into an energy-stored, strained disposition. With release of the thumb actuator, the lure flies outwardly in a substantially flat trajectory. Also, the cone is only slidably coupled to the reel housing, so that line will not be released until the cone, biasingly held to the housing, returns into full engagement with the housing.

  • Patent number: 5394815
Abstract: An adaptor for replacing the crank used with a manually operated nautical winch used on sail boats. The adaptor has a body shaped to correspond to the shape of the head of the usual crank that rotates the drum of the winch. This adaptor fits into the crank head receiving socket of the nautical winch. A stem projects upward from the adaptor for connection with the chuck of a drill whereby operation of the drill rotates the drum of the nautical winch and winds the ropes of the sail onto the drum, thereby raising the sail.

  • Patent number: 5361611
Abstract: A locking device used to secure a fishing rod and reel assembly to another object, such as an automobile, boat or the like. The locking device includes a hasp that closes around a fishing rod and the elongated neck of a fishing reel that extends from the fishing rod. The hasp includes apertures that can accept a padlock, wherein the padlock prevents the hasp from being removed from around the fishing rod and reel assembly. When closed around the fishing rod and reel assembly, the hasp independently engages both the fishing rod and the fishing reel. The hasp is mechanically attached to an object such as an automobile or boat, as such the hasp joins the fishing rod and reel assembly to the object, preventing the casual theft of the rod and reel assembly.
