A hole-forming punch and a hole-forming die are incorporated in the punch/die set, and cut a retaining hole through the rear end portion in a simultaneous manner with trimming of the rear end portion.

The leader block is adapted to be attached to a free end of the tape and has a body disposable in the hub slot. The body has an arcuate end surface that is disposed proximate the hub surface when the body is disposed in the hub slot. One of the take-up reel and the leader block includes a cushioning member disposed on one of the hub surface and the end surface, respectively. The cushioning member is adapted to receive the tape thereon.

The leader block assembly is configured to hold a free end of a storage tape and includes a generally rectangular body having opposing sides, a leading end, a trailing end terminating in an end surface, and first and second ears. The ears are formed in an opposing fashion at the trailing-end and extend radially relative to the sides along a substantial portion of a width of the trailing end. In this regard, the cars are configured to substantially prevent longitudinal sliding movement of the end surface upon insertion of the leader block assembly into a tape drive take-up reel. In one preferred embodiment, the leader block assembly includes a base block and a tape clamp, with the first ear being formed on the base block and the second ear being formed on the tape clamp.

    Abstract: A tape drive wherein a tape leader from a tape cartridge is urged through a tape path, into a take-up reel, and secured therein without the use of a buckling mechanism or a take-up leader. The take-up reel includes a locking slot defined along the central hub for receiving and locking the leader thereto. As the tape cartridge is inserted into the tape drive, an idle roller moves into position to push the leader against a motorized roller, pinching the tape leader therein between. As the motorized roller rotates, friction between the leader and rollers urges the leader through the tape path and into the take-up reel locking slot. A slight predetermined rotation of the take-up reel secures the leader with a locking member further defined within the locking slot.

    Abstract: A tape threading apparatus for use with a single reel cartridge of source tape allows leader tape to be spooled onto an inner leader drum, and source tape to be spooled on to an outer take-up drum. The apparatus has a take-up reel having an outer drum configured to accept source tape. The apparatus further includes a leader drum which is supported essentially concentric with and at least partially rotatable with respect to the outer drum. The leader tape has a first end attached to the leader drum and a second end provided with a tape connector which can be connected to the source tape. The outer drum has a leader tape opening to allow leader tape to pass freely from the leader drum to the outside of the outer drum. The leader tape opening is configured to prevent passage of the tape connector therethrough. In a first embodiment, the leader drum is configured to be driven by a drive motor.

The leader block inserts into take-up reel and the tape is initially wound at a higher than normal tension to create a small band of tightly wound tape on the reel. The band eliminates the effect of any mechanical distortion created by the leader block. The remainder of the tape is wound on top of the tight band at normal tension to form an outer band of distortion-free magnetic tape.
