Abstract: A printing apparatus includes: a motor which drives a shaft of a roll body around which a medium is wound, in the feeding direction of the medium; a transport roller which transports the medium fed from the roll body; and a control section which supplies electric power for rotating the roll body to the motor, wherein the electric power that the control section supplies to the motor at the time of the start of the feeding of the medium is larger when the diameter of the medium that is wound around the roll body is R2 (<R1) than when the diameter of the medium that is wound around the roll body is R1.
Abstract: An improved system for handling delicate linear media and in particular to a method and apparatus for winding delicate linear media such as superconducting wire or optical fibers onto a spool. A combination of direct closed loop control and media routing design facilitates the handling of the delicate media without causing damage. The axial tension in the linear media may be closely controlled during winding by means of feedback control loop using tension measurements to control the rotation speeds of the wind-from and wind-to spools. Further, during winding, the delicate linear media is only exposed to large radius bends with no reverse bending.

Abstract: An elastic thread supply device including a tension controller configured to control the stress acting upon an elastic thread drawn from an elastic thread package, and a drive roll configured to supply the elastic thread dispensed from the tension controller to a processing line. The drive roll operates at a supply velocity slower than a conveyance velocity of a web, and increases or decreases the supply velocity depending on the fluctuation in the conveyance velocity.

Abstract: A spool drive (70) for selectively retaining a spool (S) having end flanges (96) with radial ribs (97) and a central contact area (98) about a bore (99) while filamentary material (F) on the spool is payed out under tension having, a spindle (25) adapted to receive the bore in the spool, a magnetic chuck (82) surrounding and rotatable with the spindle, and a positive flange engagement mechanism (85) associated with the magnetic chuck biased into contact with an end flange of the spool and adapted to engage the radial ribs to restrain rotational slippage between the magnetic chuck and the spool.
Abstract: A mechanism (C) for tensioning a web extending from a rotating roll (R) includes three fluid relays (200-202) and two amplifiers (204, 205). A variable pressure pilot signal (P) drives a piston (66) of a rotational control apparatus (A) to create a pilot torque to the rotating roll (R). In the event that the variable pressure pilot signal (P) exceeds the bias pressures (B1-B3) of the fluid relays (200-202), the pistons (64, 68, 70, 72 and 74) are driven by fluid relays (200-202) to create relay torques to the rotating roll (R) in addition to the pilot torque in direct proportion to differences between the variable pressure pilot signal (P) and the bias pressures (B1-B3). The relay torques created by the second and third relays (201, 202) are amplified by the amplifiers (204, 205). Thus, the rotational control apparatus (A) can be fully utilized for its full torque range while still providing enough resolution to control tension of the web (W) precisely.
Abstract: An improved sheeter wire device providing constant tension on a feeder spool even during wire breakage. A constant speed motor draws wire across the face of the sheeter while a drag motor maintains constant tension on the wire. A pair of pinch rollers prohibits unwinding of the feeder spool in the event of wire breakage.
Abstract: A device for compensating length variations of tensioned cables, with a substantially constant tension, including a contrast element, which is meant to be interposed between one end of the tensioned cable and an anchoring element and is adapted to generate an elastic reaction which can vary as a function of the length variation of the cable. The device includes elements for connecting the contrast element to the cable which are suitable to convert the elastic reaction of the contrast element into a substantially constant tension applied to the cable, regardless of its length, over a preset length variation range.
Abstract: A strap tensioning apparatus for a strapping machine comprises a large pulley which is power rotated during strap feeding by powered rollers pulling strap off of a feed strap coil. Tension is maintained on the end of the strap being pulled from the feed strap coil by inertial movement of the large pulley and other rotating elements after power to the rollers is stopped.

Abstract: A tape winder including a supply spindle for supplying tape, a take-up spindle for taking up tape from the supply spindle, and opposing sidewalls with slots therein wherein the spindles are rotatably received. A drive mechanism located on the sidewalls engage the spindles when the spindles are fully inserted within the slots. The slots preferably include a narrow throat region near their openings so that the spindles may be snap-fit within the slots. The supply spindle is preferably driven with lesser torque than the take-up spindle so that the difference in relative torque between the spindles maintains tension in the tape and causes it to wind tightly.
Abstract: A gel tensioning device maintains tension on a gel. The gel is wound between two rollers as the diameters of the rollers change by rolling and unrolling the gel, the amount of movement between the two rollers also changes. This difference in movement is absorbed by a spring that biases the rollers relative to one another. The present invention preferably applies force to one of the rollers, that one roller connects to a special spring assembly and through that special spring assembly to the other roller. The special spring assembly includes a special kind of spring, which has desirable characteristics but is susceptible to reverse winding. A roller clutch allows force to be applied to the spring in the winding direction only and not in the non-winding direction. This prevents damage to the spring from any reverse winding.
