  • Patent number: 7287717
Abstract: A dispenser having a start-assist for starting rotation of a coil for dispensing flexible material from the coil includes a frame, a support, a shaft mounted to the support for supporting the coil and configured for rotation with the coil and an arm mounted about the shaft by a one-way element. The arm is connected to the shaft for rotation such that when the arm rotates in a first direction the one-way element engages the shaft to rotate the shaft and when the arm rotates in a second, opposite direction the one-way element is disengaged from the shaft to permit the shaft to freely rotate. When the flexible material is pulled from the coil the arm is rotated in the first direction to begin rotation of the coil by tension in the flexible material.

Abstract: A rewinder method and apparatus. The payout assembly of a rewinder machine comprises a spool having optical fiber wrapped about it, a motor that turns the spool as fiber is unwound from the spool, a first sheave having a surface along which the unwound fiber passes, a load cell in direct contact with the first sheave, and a motion mechanism for producing relative motion between the spool and the first sheave. The load cell senses stress exerted on the first sheave by the fiber as the fiber passes along a surface of the. The load cell produces electrical signals relating to the fleeting angle between the first sheave and the position on the spool from which fiber is being unwound. A controller receives the electrical signals and generates control signals that cause the motion mechanism to produce relative motion between the spool and the first sheave in a direction substantially parallel to an axis of rotation of the spool to reduce the fleeting angle.

  • Patent number: 6768321
Abstract: A component position indicating system which provides an indication when a first component is at the same position relative to a second component as it was at some historical reference time has a cable (11) fixed to the first component and a sheath (6) which surrounds part of the cable (11) and is connected to the second component. In this way relative movement between the first and second components produces movement of the cable within the sheath. One end of the cable (6) is wound around a cable drum (7) which is freely rotatably mounted in a chassis (2) such that movement of the cable (11) within the sheath (6) causes cable to wind onto or off of the drum (7), causing rotation of the drum (7) in the process. Sensing means senses the resulting movement of the drum (7) and records an output characteristic indicative of the position of the drum (7) relative to the chassis (2) so as to enable a particular relative position between said first and second components to be identified and accurately reproduced.

The control for the dispenser is designed for low power use, thereby allowing the dispenser to be battery powered. The dispenser can also be powered by a solar panel, either in addition to or in place of, the batteries. Thus, the dispenser can be used in all lighting conditions. In addition, the dispenser is microprocessor controlled, thereby reducing costs and adding flexibility and functionality.

Abstract: Filament is loaded into an extrusion apparatus, such as a three-dimensional deposition modeling machine, by inserting a cassette containing filament into the apparatus. A filament strand from the cassette is then advanced into the machine, such as by operating a thumb wheel or a follower wheel on the cassette. The filament loading method of the present invention provides a convenient manner of loading and unloading filament in a three-dimensional modeling machine, and can be implemented in a manner that protects the filament from environmental moisture.

The first guide surface is tilted so as to guide the roll paper in a direction opposite to a curving direction of the roll paper. In this paper feeding apparatus, the roll paper is pushed against the guide surface for removing the curl. Therefore, the curl is removed efficiently. The mechanism for removing the curl becomes simple and load of motor is reduced. The paper feeding apparatus can be applied to a compact printer that is carried with a mobile phone.

Abstract: A sheet feeding device of the present invention includes a cutter capable of being moved back and forth by hand between two reference positions outside of a sheet conveyance range. When the cutter is held in a halt at a position other than the reference positions, the sheet feeding device returns a sheet toward the upstream side by a preselected amount and then returns the cutter to one of the reference positions. Even when the cutter moved by hand for the replacement or the replenishment of a sheet is left in the sheet conveyance range, the cutter is prevented from again cutting the leading edge of the sheet when returning to the reference position. This protects the leading edge of the sheet from defective cutting.

Abstract: A paper towel dispenser which provides for hands free, automatic feeding of the first sheet of a primary web roll, such as a paper towel roll, into a feed mechanism when its cover is closed. The dispenser also automatically transfers its web feed supply from a primary roll to a reserve roll upon the exhaustion of the primary roll. The present invention eliminates the need for an attendant to thread the leading edge of a primary or reserve roll into the feed mechanism of the dispenser. The dispenser also eliminates wasted paper because it does not begin to feed the reserve roll until the primary roll has expired. The dispenser can include either a manual feed mechanism or a powered feed mechanism. The dispenser relies on a sensor for determining when a portion of the web is absent from a side of the feed mechanism proximate a web discharge opening.
