    Abstract: A housing having a base having a cavity within which a temperature scanner module may be mounted and which is readily clamped to a rail of a railroad track so that a scanner may detect an over-heated wheel or wheel bearing. The base includes a rail clamp support portion for extending beneath the rail. A clamping assembly is positioned on the clamp support portion with resilient compressible bumpers sandwiched therebetween. The clamping assembly includes a first rail clamp and a pair of spaced apart arms between which a second rail clamp is positioned and adjustably attached to the first clamping assembly so as to secure the assembly to a rail. The arms of the clamping assembly terminate at locations above the upper surface of the clamp support portion and may be forcibly urged to apply a bending moment to the clamping assembly adjacent the cavity to pivot the clamping assembly on the bumpers relative to the base. The base may thus be angularly adjusted relative to the rail.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting the presence of flat wheels on railroad cars, comprising an electro-acoustic transducer located on the track wayside so as to pick up the vibrations generated by a passing train. If a flat wheel is present it will generate a periodic clanging sound at a frequency proportional to train speed and wheel diameter. The invention capitalizes particularly on the measurement of train speed to control the response of an adaptive filter so as to enhance the periodic clanging frequency with respect to the background noise, thereby to improve the signal-to-noise ratio; the enhanced signal is further autocorrelated for ten wheel revolutions and if a periodic signal is present in the narrow frequency band of interest, a large periodic autocorrelation output will result and, as a consequence, any wheel flat will be readily detected and will act to trigger an alarm to alert the train crew of the condition.

    Abstract: In order to detect derailment of a railway vehicle each vehicle in a train is provided with an acceleration responsive device which, in response to the vehicle acceleration resulting from derailment of the vehicle transmits a short range radio signal to a receiver installed in the engine to provide a visual or audio alarm. In one practical arrangement requiring no routine maintenance each transmitter unit has a resonant circuit which is energized as a result of the stressing of a piezo-electric crystal upon vehicle derailment, avoiding the need for any separate electrical power source on the vehicle.
