Thereby, a method of evaluating releasability between the cured resin and the mold surface is established. With this evaluation method, a material with high releasability can readily be provided. Further, if the material with high releasability is used for the mold surface of the upper mold, a mold for molding a resin having excellent releasability can be obtained.

    Abstract: A hard mold and method of preparing the mold is disclosed. The hard mold is designed for manufacturing articles having various shapes and patterns. The shaping mold includes a layer of hardened material provided over the entire surface of the selected master. The inventor has found that a polyurea coating or other polyurethane hybrid is preferred. Once the layer of hardened material has dried, the surface of the hardened material is sanded with a 20-40 grit sandpaper and a layer of polyester resin is then applied to the layer of hardened material. Once the polyester resin is applied, multiple layers of vinyl ester are applied to the polyester resin to prevent the polyester resin from shrinking. In the preferred embodiment, the application includes at least three (3) layers of vinyl ester.

    Abstract: Tools and methods for making molded an optical integrated circuit including one or more waveguides are disclosed. In one embodiment, a molding die is provided that includes a substrate that has a topographically patterned first surface. A conformal protective film is provided over the first surface of the substrate. The substrate may be formed of silicon or gallium arsenide, and may be patterned using conventional semiconductor patterning techniques, such as plasma etching. The protective film may be metal (e.g., nickel or titanium), diamond, or some other hard material. Typically, a plurality of such molding dies are formed from a wafer of the substrate material. The die is pressed into a moldable material, such as thermal plastic, to form the wave guide(s) of the optical integrated circuit. A plurality of the dies may be mounted around the curved surface of a heated roller, and a heated tape of the waveguide material may be fed under the roller in a mass production process.
