  • Patent number: 4717113
Abstract: An injection molding system is provided with a plurality of wall segments which are displaceable substantially radially for forming a substantially continuous wall which forms an internal wall of a hollow region which is intended to be filled with molten molding material. In a preferred embodiment, the wall segments are urged into sliding communication with one another and sealable engagement with a further wall portion by operation of an actuator assembly which is provided with canted pins which cause the wall segments to be moved radially inwardly and outwardly in response to orthogonal displacement of the actuator assembly. The invention is therefore particularly suited for forming molded articles having hollow interiors and/or internally ribbed portions. In an embodiment where a slot is desired in the molded article, a slot core is arranged to communicate with the molten molding material, so as to form the slot, and an ejection mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4717330
Abstract: A structural component having a curved wall, such as an aircraft fuselage pipe, has a grid structure formed of box frames produced by winding tapes of fiber reinforced synthetic material, so-called prepregs, onto mold bodies. These mold bodies are then assembled on a mandrel for covering with a planking and curing whereby the tapes are bonded together to form stringers intersecting with ribs in a grid structure and whereby the planking is bonded to the grid structure. The ribs are reinforced by fiber reinforced belt segments of synthetic material inserted into gaps between adjacent short ends of the mold bodies, whereby these belt segments are bonded to the ribs during curing. The belt segments ave a width corresponding to a multiple of the width of the stringers and hence protrude radially inwardly. Preferably, an edge reinforcing strip of fiber reinforced material is arranged alongside the radially inner edge of the belt segments.

  • Patent number: 4389180
Abstract: A mandrel for forming a bell shape and an annular groove in the bell in one end of a plastic pipe which comprises a shaped profile and a plurality of identically formed segments which are movable relative to the profile. The segments are radially urged in identical radial paths from an initial position which is inwardly of the bell shaped profile to an expanded position wherein the segments cooperate and interact to form an expanded ring of diameter greater than the pipe bell, thereby to impress a circular groove therein. An actuating shaft rotatively reciprocates a pair of actuating plates to radially reciprocate the plurality of segments simultaneously between their initial positions and expanded positions. The segments each include link pairs in pivoted engagement with the actuating plates and keys which respectively ride within guide slots to radially guide the segments between their initial positions and expanded positions upon rotative reciprocation of the actuating plates.

  • Patent number: 4383819
Abstract: A bucket shaped container having a rim opening smaller than the diameter of the sidewall thereof is injection molded from thermoplastic material using a die set including a molding core which collapses to allow axial removal of the molded container from the mold. The molding core comprises a plurality of individual, wedge shaped outer core sections which collectively form a continuous molding surface and are slidably mounted on a tapered inner core to allow axial sliding movement of the outer core sections relative to the inner core. Each of the outer core sections is also mounted for radial sliding movement on a mounting plate which circumscribes the molding core and is mounted for reciprocating axial movement relative to the inner core. Reciprocation of the mounting plate produces simultaneous axial and radial movement of the outer core sections throughout their entire lengths between an expanded molding position and a collapsed container releasing position.

  • Patent number: 4378928
Abstract: This is a molding apparatus designed to mold a plastic tub of circular transverse cross-section and re-entrant shape. Specifically, the tub tapers from its closed bottom to its opened top. The mold core is, therefore, collapsed radially to permit extraction of the plastic tub from the mold. This radial collapse is accomplished by forming the mold core of a central segment and a plurality of peripheral segments, and then axially extending the central segment while moving the peripheral segments along a radially inward path so that core collapse occurs. The exterior shape of the peripheral core segments defines a circular cross-sectional shape for the interior of the tub, despite the fact that the central core segment has the configuration of a hexagonal pyramid. Side mold segments which move radially outwardly and a tub extraction ram complete the equipment for extracting the tub from the mold.

  • Patent number: 4365784
Abstract: During positioning of the cylindrical, open ended, outer member relative to a point on a slab form, a cap member may be used to cover the top and support a location determining member. The length of the outer member is adjustable to the thickness of the concrete layer to be poured. A cylindrical inner member, with a closed bottom and an open top, is inserted into the outer member. As the concrete is poured, it is received in the inner member and forms the test core. After the concrete sets, the inner member is removed, resulting in a hole in the concrete. The cap member is alternatively adapted to close the bottom of the outer member, prior to mounting the outer member on the form, to permit the hole to be subsequently filled, if the form has been removed.

  • Patent number: 4297153
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making doll clothing and doll house accessories includes a plurality of mold shapes or forms which are used to produce various articles of attire such as dresses, pants, and doll house furnishings such as cushions, curtains, rugs, flowers and many other items. Each of the garment molds may include detachable portions, such as the arms, to facilitate removing a finished article from the mold itself. The doll house accessories are made in generally flat molds which provide the texture and shape of the finished item. A viscous, liquid plastic is applied to the exterior surface of the mold by a brush or other tool to cover the exterior of the mold which defines the particular article. The liquid coating sets or solidifies to form a flexible article adapting the contours of the mold. The garment is then removed from the exterior of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4286766
Abstract: A collapsible mold core comprises an inner core member defining opposed first and second ends. The inner core member tapers transversely to a reduced diameter from the first to the second end. A plurality of outer core members are attached to the lateral exterior of the inner core member in longitudinally slidable relation to it between first and second sliding positions. The outer core members define first and second ends corresponding in position to the first and second ends of the inner core member, with the outer core members tapering inwardly in transverse dimension from their second to their first ends to provide an opposite taper to that of the inner core member. The mold core is of lesser transverse diameter in the second sliding position than in the first sliding position. This permits the molding of an object such as a straight-walled bucket having an inwardly-projecting lip about the mold core while it occupies the first sliding position.
