  • Patent number: 11629789
Abstract: A valve assembly is adjustable in three independent ways allowing it to provide a variable input volume. The valve assembly has a base and an entrance plate. An outer guide, an inner guide and a shaft, each with a passage, are held together and the shaft is rotatable between the guides. The valve is open when the passages of the inner guide plate and shaft are aligned and closed when the passages are not aligned. The shaft RPM determines how many times per minute the valve opens. The open/closed ratio of the valve assembly determines how long the valve is open during each half revolution. The location of the shaft up or down in relationship to the inner guide determines what percentage of possible flow passes through the valve during each half revolution. The valve assembly can be used with either a gas or liquid medium.

  • Patent number: 5417404
Abstract: This invention relates to ball valves. One problem with conventional ball valves is that opening and closing the valve causes the valve seal to scrape across the valve seat. This reduces the life of the seal. This scraping problem can be eliminated by retracting the seal from the seat before turning the valve. In this invention, the ball valve has two coaxial handle assemblies. The outer, lever, assembly turns the valve closure member within its housing. The inner, handwheel, assembly is used independently to retract or extend the valve seal from or to the valve seat. The retraction or extension is achieved by use of a jack-screw shaft which pushes the seal in and out. The jack screw shaft is driven by a series of gears--a first bevel gear, a ring gear, and a second bevel gear--driven by the inner handle assembly. The ball valve is also provided with an inspection port. This port permits inspection, repair, or replacement of the valve seal while the valve is in use in its open position.

By utilizing the novel plug configuration for direct plug bearing support, the present invention obviates the need for a lower trunnion and does away with the need for high load-bearing bushings. In all other respects, the operation of a plug valve, utilizing the plug of the present invention, remains substantially the same as it would be for a prior art plug valve. In fact, it is possible to substitute a novel plug configuration of the present invention for a prior art plug configuration for retrofitting existing valves of the type herein disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5005805
Abstract: A lift-turn valve actuator is provided for tapered plug valve and slip assemblies that accomplishes vertical movement of the plug and retraction of the slips from sealing engagement with the valve body prior to rotation of the plug member 90.degree. to its open position. The valve actuator assembly includes inner fitting inner and outer sleeve members each having cam slots formed therein with the cam follower of a valve actuating stem being engaged with both cam slots. Rotation of the outer sleeve member with respect to the static inner sleeve imparts initial vertical movement to the actuator stem, valve stem and valve plug for slip retraction as an initial component of movement followed by simultaneous rotational and upward movement of the plug member until the plug member has rotated 90.degree. to its open position.

  • Patent number: 4940210
Abstract: A new and improved valve apparatus and method of operating same that moves a flow closure assembly between open and closed positions with a minimum of frictional resistance while effecting a forcible engagement with both upstream and downstream valve seats when in the closed position. The preferred ball-type flow closure assembly is formed of two pivoted sections that are forcibly moved axially or tilted to sealingly engage the longitudinally spaced valve seats to provide upstream and downstream sealing by the valve in moving between an intermediate position and the closed position. The opening to closing movement is effected by rotating the valve actuator stem through an arc slightly greater than a quarter turn to provide a fast response operation. The valve actuator further includes a two part guide means which effects tilting of the ball sections only after or before rotational movement to insure that the ball is released from sealing engagement with both seats by only axial movement.

  • Patent number: 4738431
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved ball valve structure and a well safety valve utilizing the improved ball valve. The improved valve includes a metal seat member having a resilient section and control arms, which may be positioned to initially sealingly engage the seat with the ball and to compress the seat resilient section to control the force sealingly engaging the seat with the metal ball and thereby limit frictional forces opposing opening rotational forces when pushing on the seat to open the valve. The control arms are positioned by rings threaded on the seat above the control arms and below a shoulder in each arm. When the seat is moved down to open the ball valve, opening rotational forces are imparted to the valve ball through both the seat and control arms. The well safety valve utilizing the improved ball valve structure includes an annular metal valve and means increasing the force sealingly engaging the seat with the valve ball as pressure below the closed ball valve increases.

  • Patent number: 4718444
Abstract: Selective retraction of a spring-biased valve seat from slidable sealing engagement with a ball valve member is effected by a threaded retraction tool inserted through a threaded retraction port normally sealed by a removable sealing screw and gasket. The tapered distal end of the tool contacts a radially outward-facing and convex camming surface of the valve seat that tapers toward the forward/sealing end of the seat. Rotation of the tool in a direction to increase insertion causes the distal end of the tool to slide along the camming surface while forcing the valve seat away from the valve ball in opposition to the resilient bias sealing force. The taper in the camming surface may be provided as a smooth generally parabolodial configuration or as discrete surface segments subtending different respective cam angles with a reference plane oriented perpendicular to the direction of the spring bias force.

  • Patent number: 4623119
Abstract: An improved plug-type valve of the type having a plug connected to slips wherein opening and closing the valve involves both vertical and rotational motion of the plug, the novel features of the invention residing in geometrical characteristics of plug, slips and valve body to make the vertical motion of the plug, both prior to and subsequent to the rotation of the plug and slips, unidirectional. Thus, unlike prior art plug-type valves wherein opening the valve may require a sequence comprising vertical upward motion, rotation and vertical downward motion, in the present invention the opening sequence comprises vertical upward motion, rotation and vertical upward motion. This unidirectional vertical component of plug motion both before and after plug and slip rotation, significantly reduces the complexity and cost of the operator or actuator to which the plug is connected by the trunnion.

  • Patent number: 4617964
Abstract: A flow control apparatus for use primarily in plug-type valves provides means for continuously varying the flow rate of fluid through the valve while using the same operator that is used to control the open and closed position of the valve. The invention utilizes a globe valve-type throttling plug which requires no special mechanism to coordinate the throttling motion of the valve. Only the plug and lower plate of the valve body are modified relative to existing plug valves to achieve a unique flow control capability. The plug of the invention provides distinct inlet and outlet channels separated by a flow control passage which may be selectively obstructed by a fixed flow control element which is an integral portion of an inverted lower trunnion extending from the bottom plate of the valve body. The vertical position of the plug with the plug rotated for alignment with the inlet and outlet of the valve, determines the degree of flow through the plug.
