Patent number: 5441234Abstract: A system is disclosed for handling, storing, transporting and dispensing cryogenic fluids, liquid natural gas, compressed natural gas, and their equivalents. Internal valves are disclosed for dispensing such fuels from containers used in the system. The containers, in one aspect, are mounted in protective frame systems which are stackable and which provide access to the containers and the valves. A fuel injection system is disclosed for directly injecting LNG into an engine's combustion chamber. Such systems include a railroad system in which a container of fuel is carried on a flat car behind a locomotive and the, e.g. liquid natural gas, is conveyed to the locomotive with appropriate valves, conduits, pumps, and controls.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1993Date of Patent: August 15, 1995Inventors: George W. Patent number: 5433410Abstract: A drain valve for replacement of drain plugs or drain valves to facilitate the quick drainage of fluid from an equipment. The drain valve has a tubular housing assembly having a threaded section to be threaded into a threaded drain hole and a hexagonal nut section for assisting in mounting or removing the tubular housing assembly to threaded into or from the drain hole. A valve stem assembly has a valve stem which extends through the tubular housing assembly and has an actuator which an operator can push to open the drain valve. A compression spring disposed between the valve stem assembly and the tubular housing assembly provides a force on the actuator to force the drain valve into a closed position. Inlets in the valve stem permit fluid to flow through a drainage bore in the valve stem when the drain valve is in the open position.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1994Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Inventor: Timothy J. Patent number: 5297778Abstract: A butterfly valve disc has a circular cross-section bore for receiving the end of a drive shaft which engages with a member non-rotatably located in the bore. The member is polygonal and preferably formed with twelve sides and edges, the edges biting into the internal surface of the bore to prevent rotation. The member preferably is of harder alloy than the disc to resist wearing and is formed with a slot extending perpendicularly to the plane of the disc to receive a corresponding tongue formed at the end of the shaft. This arrangement allows a small degree of play so that if the disc is subjected to pressure on one side and therefore bends, the torque required to open the valve is not increased. Alternatively wherein the disc (or another component) is not subject to such pressure the member may be integrally formed with the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1993Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Assignee: BTR plcInventors: Michael P. Patent number: 5144978Abstract: The valve includes a rubber gasket which is clamped and sealed to the sheet metal vessel of a fuel/water separator by a rivet nut and which serves as a seat for the valve head of a valve member that is screwed into the rivet nut. When the valve member is opened, the valve head moves upwardly away from the gasket to allow air to enter the vessel through one passage in the valve member and to enable liquid to drain from the vessel through a separate passage in the valve member. The valve member may be formed as two die cast parts which interfit with one another to define the passages and which eliminate the need of machining the passages. Alternatively, the valve member may be a single die cast part with internal passages, there being a die cast operating knob attached to the valve member.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1992Date of Patent: September 8, 1992Assignee: Baldwin Filters, Inc.Inventors: Gene W. Patent number: 4986502Abstract: A drain plug for threaded engagement within a threaded drain opening of a pressurized system to prevent complete removal of the plug before release of any residual pressure within the system. An axially extending groove is formed in the threaded portion of an elongated shank of the plug and terminates in an unthreaded area of the shank adjacent to an enlarged head of the plug. An O-ring is compressed against the pressurized vessel or container when the plug is fully sealed in the threaded opening. The end of the groove adjacent the plug head beings to vent any residual pressure trapped within the pressurized system upon partial unloosening of the plug to relieve pressure while a sufficient number of threads on the inner end of the shank remain engaged within the threaded opening to prevent the plug from being blown out of the hole by any residual pressure. In an alternate embodiment, an axial hole is formed through the center of the shank and communicates with a cross hole to provide the venting for the plug.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1989Date of Patent: January 22, 1991Inventor: Clarence J. Patent number: 4893651Abstract: A self-venting valve apparatus using a valve stem rotatably and slidably mounted to a vessel by a collar is disclosed. The stem includes threads at the top and base of the stem which matingly engage internal threads of the collar to hold the stem open or closed. A single gasket seals the gas inlet and liquid outlet in the closed configuration. To drain the fluid, the valve stem is unscrewed so the bottom threads disengage from the collar, the valve stem lowers until the top threads of the valve stem engage the collar, and the top threads are screwed to the collar to secure the valve in the open position. Fluid begins draining through the central passage of the valve stem before gas enters the vessel through the groove in the sidewall of the valve steam to allow proper siphoning. The lower end of the liquid drain passage is placed below the lower end of the air inlet groove, thereby insuring that the liquid drain passage is opened first as the valve stem is lowered.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1989Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventors: Peter K. Patent number: 4314689Abstract: A drain valve for handling contaminated fluids includes a body having a drain port and an internal passage communicating therewith. A plug is disposed in the internal passage and the plug defines a drain passage which communicates with the internal passage. Further, the drain valve includes an actuating device for selectively positioning the plug to a drain port opening position and to a drain port closing position, and a device for preventing contamination of the actuation device. Accordingly, contaminates are prevented from reaching the actuating device and reducing the efficiency of the drain valve. The drain valve also includes a seal located above the drain port. The plug sealingly engages the seal in the drain port closing position. With the seal located above the drain port, contaminates in the fluid are unable to collect thereon and thus do not abrade the seal as the plug is actuated into the drain port closing position.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1979Date of Patent: February 9, 1982Assignee: Racor Industries, Inc.Inventor: Michael E.
