Treatment modalities that include addition of the disclosed materials, compositions and systems to pre- and post-construction concrete-containing materials and surfaces are provided. Reductions in the rate and/or impact of corrosion are achieved for concrete-containing structures and surfaces. In addition, despite the water soluble properties of the material, composition or system, the treatments are effective in delivering an advantageous level of moisture resistance to the treated concrete-containing structure and/or surface. The composition is synthesized from a feedstock that includes C9 to C16 branched hydrocarbons of varying structures.

An inorganic or organic material is used to stabilize the tetravalent rare earth ion to form a compound that is sparingly soluble in water. Specific stabilizers are chosen to control the release rate of tetravalent cerium, terbium, or praseodymium during exposure to water and to tailor the compatibility of the powder when used as a pigment in a chosen binder system. Stabilizers may also modify the processing and handling characteristics of the formed powders. Many rare earth-valence stabilizer combinations are presented that can equal the performance of conventional hexavalent chromium systems.

If adhesion to paint is desired, the adhesion promoter preferably is an acrylic film-forming substance, while if adhesion to elastomers is desired, the adhesion promoter preferably is a polymer of vinyl phenol and the phosphating solution preferably also contains calcium cations.

    Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor is described which includes several supramolecular oxo-anion compositions useful for preventing the propagation of pit corrosion on aluminum and aluminum alloys. The oxo-anion compositions preferably include soluble polymeric oxidic acids comprising combinations of molybdenum, phosphorous, tungsten, and silicon. These compositions are useful as corrosion inhibitors in high-moisture, corrosive environments, such as radiators and cooling systems. For low-moisture environments, these oxo-anion compositions can be reacted with a counter-ion, such as various metals, including, but not limited to the rear earth metals, to form a soluble salt. The salt can then be adsorbed onto a carrier, such as paint pigments, which can then be applied to the surfaces of aluminum and aluminum alloys. These surface adsorbates then become sparingly soluble and are gradually released over time in the presence of an aqueous corrosive agent so as to prevent propagation of pit corrosion.
