Abstract: A series of die spacers of differing shades are used to match or replicate an assortment of tooth stump or dentin tooth shades. Such die spacers correspond to shades of various manufacturers. This allows the dentist to approximate the proper shade of the tooth preparation in his prescription of a translucent restoration which is communicated to the technician. The technician then applies onto the die of the tooth preparation a die spacer closely matching the chosen tooth stump shade, allowing the technician to wax-up over the die with the selected die spacer. The die spacer retains the traditional function of creating the necessary space under the wax pattern or wax-up. After removal of the wax-up from the die, it is processed, following the manufacturer's procedures, to make a non-opacious substructure of, for example, a translucent ceramic restoration.

  • Patent number: 5968424
Abstract: A ceramic powder having a uniform particle diameter of 50 .mu.m or smaller is used as a dental ceramic powder to produce a high-precision and compact artificial tooth. The ceramic powder fired assures a non-porous and compact structure of the artificial tooth. In a manufacturing method for the artificial tooth, the cream of ceramic powder is poured into a core, the core with the ceramic cream loaded is frozen to shape, thawed, dried and then fired in a furnace. To assure even more compact structure, the cream is compacted and hardened prior to freezing. Pressure is efficiently applied in the compaction and hardening process.

  • Patent number: 5575653
Abstract: The artificial tooth blanks made by series production involve a dentin-colored fired dental ceramic composition including a previously compression-molded hard core and optionally a retention, wherein the size of the artificial tooth blank is reduced over that of the corresponding finished artificial tooth and the artificial tooth blanks do not contain an enamel layer. The retention may involve one or more high-melting shells incorporated by firing and containing high-melting retention pins soldered therein after firing, wherein the retention pins as well as the solder are stable under the melting conditions for dental ceramic compositions for bridges and crowns, and especially so in the presence of air as well.

  • Patent number: 5298200
Abstract: A dental refractory model material comprises as powdery components 5 to 20% by weight of a soluble phosphate, 5 to 20% by weight of magnesium oxide and 10 to 50% by weight of at least one selected from the group of alumina, zirconia, fused quartz, mullite, spinel and cordierite with the balance being crystalline quartz and crystobalite. The refractory model material also includes a liquid component such as a colloidal silica dispersion.

  • Patent number: 5176924
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for surface treating the inside surfaces of hollow or three dimensional plastic objects. While the invention will be described with respect to plastic objects, it will be understood that other objects having a high dielectric strength, such as ceramics, cardboard, paper and wood, may be similarly treated. The surface treating is effected by selectively directing a high voltage plasma field to a selected interior surface of the object to enhance adhesion of various glues, inks and the like. The plasma field is generated in the interior of a tunnel directed into an opening of the hollow portion of the object to be treated. A specially designed electrode is supported from the opening to direct in a controlled manner the field to the selected interior area of the object to be treated. The electrode is supported from a high dielectric shield covering a central area of the opening to direct the plasma field around the shield to a laterally extending electrode below the shield.

  • Patent number: 5162130
Abstract: A method of effecting the coloration of a restoration to be mounted on a tooth including the steps of forming a mixture of powdered dental porcelain and a photonucleable silicate glass and shaping the mixture into a dental restoration. The dental restoration is heated in an oven to its fusing temperature and allowed to cool. Selected areas of the restoration are exposed to ultra-violet light. The dental restoration is reexposed to high energy while the color of the selected areas changes.

  • Patent number: 5094619
Abstract: A method of coloring dental restorations which consists of incorporating within the dental restoration material prior to curing a coloration agent which upon the application of heat or other energy alters the color of the restoration. By applying the energy in steps it is possible to match closely the color of the restoration to adjacent teeth or that of the tooth on which the restoration is mounted.

  • Patent number: 5030392
Abstract: A glazing device, and a method for using such device to apply a surface glaze to a dental construct. The device includes glazing material associated with a shrinkable, hollow carrier. The method includes associating glazing material with a hollow carrier composed of a shrinkable and removable material, assembling the construct and carrier with the construct positioned within the carrier, shrinking the carrier onto the construct, removing the carrier, and maturing the material to a glaze. The device and method find particular application in applying coloration, either uniformly or in a pattern, to a dental construct.
