  • Patent number: 4956032
Abstract: A method of filling an annular space between inner and outer coaxially arranged pipes while providing the option of maintaining fluid flow through the inner pipe includes optionally establishing fluid flow through the inner pipe; installing first and second seals in the annular space between the two spaced apart pipes at first and second ends of the pipes and inserting one end of a vacuum tube into the annular space through the first seal at the high point in the first seal. A grout tube is inserted into the annular space through the second seal at the high point of the second seal. A vacuum is applied to the second end of the vacuum tube and a grout mixture is applied to an opposite end of the grout tube. A sufficient vacuum is maintained within the annular space for such a time period to draw the grout mixture from the second end to the first end of the pipes to completely fill the annular space.

  • Patent number: 4913588
Abstract: A method and apparatus for insulating a pipeline (1) which is more or less submerged in the sea bottom consists in that the insulation (3) is made directly at the pipeline (1): the substances for production of the insulating overing are transported to a mixing chamber (7) at the production site and are foamed around the pipeline (1). For this purpose may be used a flexible sheet (4) of material such as foil which is anchored to the sea bottom (2). Through the production of the insulation (3) in situ, the gas pressure in the insulating material (3) can be adapted to the outer pressure and thereby a compression of the material with loss of insulating effect can be avoided.

  • Patent number: 4867926
Abstract: A lip-type oil seal for use with a rotary shaft is manufactured by a method wherein different elastomeric materials for forming respectively the sealed liquid side and the atmospheric side of a tip portion of a sealing lip of the oil seal have different moduli of elasticity or hardnesses and are placed in a superposed condition within a mold prepared for vulcanization molding the oil seal. The mold is then clamped and the materials are heated and compressed so that an elastomeric material is fluidized and is vulcanization molded together with the other material to form an integral structure while a surplus portion is allowed to remain on the atmospheric side, thereby forming a sealed liquid side surface of the sealing lip. After the fluidized material has been hardened, the mold is opened and the surplus portion is then cut off, thereby forming an atmospheric side surface of the sealing lip.

Abstract: Methods for forming prestressed concrete members wherein a pressure-containing casing is disposed around the outside surface of the concrete member and is spaced therefrom so that a cavity is formed between the casing and the outside surface of the concrete member. A pressurized medium is injected into the cavity between the casing and concrete member at a pressure sufficient to apply the required prestressed compressive force to the outside surface of the concrete member. The pressurized medium changes form by hardening or solidifying after injection. Examples of solid pressurized mediums include cement-like grouts and plastic, and epoxy resin materials. When the concrete member is cast within the casing so as to be in intimate contact with the casing the cavity is then formed by peeling the concrete member and casing away from each other as the pressurized medium is injected therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4664284
Abstract: The production of a tubular container is effected by rolling and lap-welding a multi-ply foil to form a cylindrical tube body (1), the arrangement of a collar (5) which partially closes this tube body (1) at the top, and the production of a head piece (4) of plastics material, which on the one hand connects the tube body (1) to the collar (5) and on the other hand forms the top closure of the tube. The collar (5) has a simple basic form before working and is brought by the working into a form in which its cut edges can be covered by plastics material flowing thereover, this shaping requiring no additional working operation, but being effected by the forces set up during the moulding process of the plastics material. Further by the shaping of the collar (5), the spacing between the collar and the tube body is reduced, thereby further improving protection against diffusion.

  • Patent number: 4653980
Abstract: A mechanical seal assembly for use with centrifugal pumps including at least one unitized elastomer assembly for urging the seal faces of a pair of seal rings into sealing engagement with each other. The unitized elastomer assembly serves as a seal ring mounting arrangement and includes a spaced pair of metallic rings which are chemically bonded to an annular elastomer body disposed therebetween and whose cross section between the rings is loaded in shear when the elastomer assembly is operatively arranged in the pump. A mechanical seal is established between at least one of said rings and the elastomer body for protecting the chemical bond therebetween against attack by corrosive pump product.

Abstract: A motion transmitting remote control assembly of the type for transmitting motion in a curved path including a flexible motion transmitting core element, a conduit for supporting the core element and an end fitting disposed at the end of the conduit. A rod is attached to the end of the core element. The assembly also includes a swivel tube having a bore therethrough for swiveling movement relative to the end fitting and for movably supporting the rod. The swivel tube is connected to the end fitting in a swivel joint. The assembly is characterized by the swivel joint including a male swivel portion of the swivel tube and including a cup-shaped insert engaging the male swivel portion at least beyond the front face thereof. The end fitting encapsulates the end of the conduit and the insert and the remainder of the male swivel portion on the swivel tube. A method of making the motion transmitting remote control assembly is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4643855
Abstract: Joints and leaks in pipelines or mains are sealed by injecting into the joint or leak a sealant by means of an expandible tubular pig which is moved endwise through the pipeline or main. The sealant is in the form of an anaerobically curable monomer which cures in the relatively air free conditions in the joint or leak. The pig forms within the pipeline or main an air-free space which communicates with the joint or leak and which is isolated from the fluid in the main. Nevertheless the pig is hollow to permit the flow of fluid therethrough while the joint or leak is sealed. The sealant is injected into the joint or leak by way of the space so that the sealant cures in situ in the joint or leak.

  • Patent number: 4642212
Abstract: A robotic base compartment has an interior locating surface. A plurality of pins extend squarely from the locating surface. The pins are located by pre-assembly machining and the extending pin surfaces are coated with a release agent. A robotic component plate, such as a gear-carrying plate, is assembled in the base compartment, with clearance slots surrounding the locating pins. After adjustably positioning the gear elements with one another by shifting the component plate, the slots are filled, for at least a portion, with a pourable hardenable material such as epoxy which is then allowed to harden. The components may thereafter be disassembled and reassembled without the loss of precision location. The assembly method obviates the need for manual drilling and reaming of pin holes at assembly and the attendant chip contamination that results therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4629597
Abstract: A method of forming a molded encapsulation around a sealed spliced region between two cables in which the cables pass through a mold with the splice region in the mold cavity and correctly centered before molding. To allow for the centering operation to be performed, apertures are provided in the mold. Hook members are passed through the apertures. These hook members are caused to engage both inner and outer mold surfaces and they also engage tie means at two circumferentially spaced positions around the splice region to centralize the region within the cavity. The mold is then filled with molten material and the hooks removed from the apertures with the material still molten. Hook removal may take place either when the cavity is completely filled or after sufficient molten material has entered the mold to hold the splice region in fixed position. The method is applicable to low pressure molding, i.e. below 100 psi and preferably below 50 psi.

  • Patent number: 4592886
Abstract: A technique for stabilizing an insulating liner formed of thermoplastic material which is injection molded onto the inner surface of a metal spool having a cylindrical body provided with end flanges, an annular gap being created between the liner and the spool body due to differential shrinkage between the liner and the body as the molded liner cools and solidifies. In order to fill this gap to prevent a change in the inner diameter of the liner when the liner is subjected to the pressure of a fluid flowing therethrough, the spool body is provided with ports which extend between the exterior and interior surfaces thereof. These ports are sealed during the injection-molding process by removable plugs. After injection-molding, the plugs are removed and a thermosetting resin is introduced into one of the ports until the gap is filled as evidenced by the fact that the resin begins to rise in the other ports, the resin then being cured to solidify the filler.
