  • Patent number: 8066920
Abstract: Optical qualities of a production lot of base material used in the fabrication of semi-finished lenses may be accurately determined by employing chipper plate samples produced from the base material in accordance with aspects of the present invention. In various implementations of the present invention, the chipper plates samples may be fabricated by subjecting base material to an extended cycle time and temperature profile using a mold having cavities of different thicknesses. The resulting chipper plates provide an improved indication of the color of semi-finished lenses molded from the production lot as well as an improved indication of resin stabilizer defects that may be utilized during a pelletizing process to control and enhance the quality of a production lot. Furthermore, the chipper plates may be provided by suppliers as samples of a production lot to enable customers to base purchasing decisions on a reliable and accurate measure of optical properties.

  • Patent number: 8057728
Abstract: A device and process for extracting plastic preforms (5) from holders. Said device comprises a plate (23), which features straight slits (26) positioned parallel to each other, that is attached to a supporting table (20, 21). Each slit (26) comprises wider sections and constrictions (29, 30), which have a width (L2) smaller than the diameter of the ring (9) of the preform, so that the ring (9) can be fitted into the slit (26) through the wider section. The plate (23) is moved in the direction <<D>> by a specific length until the constrictions are positioned under the ring, and, thus, the preforms are removed by moving the plate away from the holders.

  • Patent number: 8012396
Abstract: Apparatus and method for making a molded plastic article having a stretched and crystallized neck finish. In one embodiment, a series of platforms are carried by a conveying apparatus for transporting a series of molded plastic articles along a predetermined path of travel through one or more treatment stations. At a finish widening station, the molded article, having a relatively wide and thin-walled blow-molded body portion, and a relatively narrow and thick-walled unexpanded neck finish portion, is positioned to enable insertion of a mandrel into an open top aperture of the finish portion to widen the finish. The mandrel may include a lower heated tapered portion for expanding the finish, and an upper cooled body portion on which the expanded finish may be cooled. The article may then be sent to a finish crystallizing station having a heating device that heats the widened finish portion for a time and temperature selected to crystallize at least a portion of the widened finish.

  • Patent number: 6929767
Abstract: A multi-lap mold manufacturing system includes an overhead rail circuit upon which a multiple of molds transit a closed loop for a multiple of laps. The system is separated into Zones in which a particular mold operation is performed relative to which lap each of the plurality of molds has completed. At least one of the Zones is a spray Zone in which the mold is sprayed robotically. Robot utilization is extremely high as multiple spray operations occur in but a few spray Zones. Application of exceedingly expensive environmental emission control devices is at least partially mitigated by the reduced number of spray stations and the much smaller factory footprint. Consolidation of multiple spray operations into a few spray Zones also advantageously simplifies the control of chemical and ambient variables which improves production efficiencies and reduces operator dependency.

  • Patent number: 6866808
Abstract: A method is provided for producing a plurality of moldings in one mold wherein the mold has at least one introduction point for molding material and a plurality of cavities with a shape corresponding to that of the moldings. The cavities are arranged so that each cavity, except cavities in an end or peripheral position, is connected to at least two directly adjacent cavities. A fluid casting compound of a material having a solidified hardness of not more than about 200 N, defined as the force at which an 11 mm sphere of the material will shatter, is introduced into the mold, so that it essentially fills all of the cavities, and the casting compound is then solidified and removed from the mold.

  • Patent number: 6835336
Abstract: The invention provides biopolymer sponge tubes closed at one end for use in surgery. The preferred biopolymer iscollagen. The biopolymer sponge tubes are prepared by forming an aqueous dispersion of the biopolymer, introducing the dispersion into tube-shaped moulds, freezing the dispersion in the moulds to form a shaped, aqueous dispersion, followed by freeze-drying the frozen aqueous dispersion. The tubes are fitted over endoscopic surgical staplers to provide improved sealing of stapled tissues, especially for air-tight sealing in lung resections.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a safety helmet, including forming, through a process of injection molding using a single mold, a basic safety helmet comprising a basic outer shell having a brim integrally formed with a dome. The brim of the basic safety helmet may have a uniform and constant width, or a variable width around a lower perimeter of the dome. The method also includes selectively removing portions of the basic safety helmet after the basic safety helmet is formed to produce a modified safety helmet.

  • Patent number: 6824723
Abstract: A molding and tentatively retaining mold 10 of the invention has a plurality of molds which are relatively movable with respect to a fixed mold, and molds a housing 31 and rear holders 32 and 33, which are respectively independent, in a plurality of cavities formed in cooperation with the fixed mold. When the rear holders 32 and 33 are relatively moved with respect to the housing 31 by a pair of rear-holder tentatively retaining cylinders 19 after molding, and are tentatively retained, the amount of movement of a pair of third movable molds 14 is set to be greater by a predetermined amount than an amount of movement necessary for tentatively retaining the rear holders 32 and 33, and the third movable molds 14 after movement are stopped at the moved positions until a predetermined time elapses.

  • Publication number: 20040232577
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method for forming a golf ball is described. The method includes utilizing strands of a desired material. The method employs a top, center and bottom plate. The strands are placed over the concave cavities of a lower plate and over the hemispherical protrusions of a center plate. The three plates are then placed in a press, along with a top plate, thereby forming two sets of hemispherical shells. One set of shells remains in the cavities of the top plate, and one set remains in the cavities of the bottom plate. Centers are placed inside the hemispherical shells of the bottom plate. The two sets of shells are then brought together to form a complete core. A cover may be added to complete the formation of a golf ball.

  • Publication number: 20040212126
Abstract: An apparatus and method for molding multi-material parts. The mold has a plurality of first mold cavities interspersed alternately among a plurality of second mold cavities. A first molten material is injected into the first mold cavities and solidified. Cores with the first material are moved only one mold pitch to the second mold cavities where a second molten material is injected and solidified with the first material to form the multi-material parts which are ejected from the mold when it is opened. In one embodiment, cavities and cores are arranged in a column, and dummy cores on each end of a column of cores close off the injection nozzle in an end cavity from which a core has been removed for a molding cycle. In another embodiment, cavities and cores are arranged radially, and cores are rotationally moved one mold pitch with each molding cycle.

  • Patent number: 6793858
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously forming flexible mat structure in the form of spaced, interconnected concrete panels. The mat structure can serve as an erosion control mat along the banks of waterways and within drainage ditches and channels, and can also be utilized to provide temporary or permanent walkways and roadways. A rotatable drum includes peripherally-positioned mold cavities that receive concrete mix from a trough supplied from a source of concrete mix. A grid is fed against the drum periphery and over the mold cavities before the concrete mix is introduced, and after the mix is introduced a web of fibrous material is brought into contact with the concrete-mix-containing mold cavities to overlie the concrete-containing surface of the drum. As the drum rotates the fibrous material with overlying, interconnected concrete panels is deposited on the ground to provide the a finished mat structure.
